For me indiepop as a genre is songwriting (often but not always imitative of 60s styles) centered on melody and generally in a diaristic, personally expressive mode. In terms of lyrics, indiepop values emotional honesty - the singing though generally avoids obvious cathartic techniques (eg screaming, hollering, etc.) In fact blues and rock inflections are usually absent: soul, funk and disco elements are even more usually absent. There is no particular privileging of the guitar as an instrument, though.
The relationship with the audience is a very close one - more like a folk-audience relationship than a pop/rock-audience relationship. This audience relationship, and a loyalty to the indiepop community, is seen as more important than technical ability or innovation in the music.

Too right. Jangly is the keyword. Generally sounds like pre-debut album Stone Roses. Think Bluetones. Think Dodgy. Think I Should Coco by Supergrass. Can be good fun if taken in small doses.

This appears to be what Marianna, anyway, is talking about when she says "indiepop" -- same, I think, for Electric Sound of Jim or Grayson Lane (or any of the people who actually listen to that stuff, obviously).

I don't really separate indiepop from indie rock, although I concede there may be a slight difference between Tiger Trap and Trail Of Dead. Although not so much of a gulf between Heavenly and Supergrass

These guys know what indiepop is.

I mean really, I'm stuck at the very beginning. When I think of C86 I think of "PURE INDIE ROCK AND ROLL". When I think of C86 I think of "the finest grade A indie beats".
"You have the attitude, we have the music"

god Jagerbombs are such a rip, "wooooh 2 quid for something i won't notice i've drunk"
― a strident purist when it comes to band-related shirts (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 16 November 2013 14:01 (twelve years ago)
Man, that's the LEAST offensive thing about this flyer (I like Jagerbombs).
― emil.y, Saturday, 16 November 2013 14:03 (twelve years ago)
lol a barman in a weird village pub once gave me a load of free jagerbombs like "this will fuck you up" I was like thanks 4 the sherbert can I have a drink now
― comic sbans soref (wins), Saturday, 16 November 2013 14:06 (twelve years ago)
i don't dislike them but i feel like they're a waste of drinking money
clearly it's the least offensive thing about any indie disco night
(not because i hate "indie" per se but indie discos are the fucking nadir)
― a strident purist when it comes to band-related shirts (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 16 November 2013 14:06 (twelve years ago)

kids who only wanna cop off to the strains of Kasabian
the dulcet strains of Gomez, get it right
― imago, Saturday, 16 November 2013 14:09 (twelve years ago)
tbf Gomez are largely above most of this lot in retrospect and that's damning
― imago, Saturday, 16 November 2013 14:10 (twelve years ago)
But they do play the, er, "Whether Prophets".

tempting as it is to clown the misappropriation of shambling 80s indie feeb esthetics in the service of a 2000s landfill indie & classixxx night, i'm not sure what is to be gained from clowning something the venerable indie disco institution in general, given that they exist solely to help 19yr olds getting off with each other and make jake bugg fans older than 19 wish they had stayed at home insufflating soda crystals

So is nobody else perturbed by the fact that these people clearly don't even understand what they're talking about? It's like advertising a night of gabba and then playing 2 Unlimited or something.
But yeah, NV is right that the mainstream indie disco is a long long long running tradition, and not something I would want to see completely burned to the ground.

if u think abt it, indie discos are the kindertransports of the modern age, taking the persecuted youth of the suburbs and provinces into their bosom and nurturing them with the sweet pablum of ian brown and the long blondes

(I saw that band play recently, they were hyped up as being post-punk wunderkinder... they sounded like the Smiths)

(But eh... they weren't bad enough to completely mock, I don't think. Just... straight down the line middling.)

I went to what was billed as a traditional landfill indie disco in Camden not too long ago and it turned out to be two guys from The Maccabees playing jackin house records all night. I think that as long as the ratio of 19 yr-old girls to lads with the top button of their shirts done up is maintained effectively, you might as well be playing Heino for all anyone cares.

"Reverend and the Makers." This is something that's happening in 2013?
Funny to see this thread pop up, as my bandmate told me I was too twee to date her friend just a couple of hours ago. (Admittedly, I was wearing a Talulah Gosh t-shirt, so he probably had a point.)

I think the people behind that night's sole awareness of "C86" is in terms of "a tape of NME-endorsed indie" so in their minds they're right on the button atm with that playlist..
