The Beggars Group have decided to shut down Too-Pure and Beggars Banquet and move all artists to 4AD. Which explains why the new Stereolab is on 4AD..

Beggars Banquet didn't really release anything worthwhile for over 20 years IMO, but Too-Pure was a classic label..
― Jack Battery-Pack, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 06:37 (seventeen years ago)
pity about too pure - it seemed like they were starting to get really good again, particularly with that singles club stuff. i wonder if it hugs back are now without label or will also be shoved over to the dumping grounds of 4ad?
― electricsound, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 06:40 (seventeen years ago)
Hmmm, Future of the Left on 4AD...
― Simon H., Wednesday, 30 April 2008 06:43 (seventeen years ago)
on the other hand it makes a lot of sense to rationalise the roster if it's effectively all the same bunch of people doing the management and the brand isn't worth that much anymore
― electricsound, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 06:45 (seventeen years ago)
Presumably, this means 4AD loses any remaining identity it had?
― Mark G, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 08:20 (seventeen years ago)
There's massive cost cutting going on at Beggars at the minute.
I bet they wish they hadn't bought Rough Trade.
― Raw Patrick, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 08:22 (seventeen years ago)
My ex-girlfriend works (worked?) for Beggards. Must. Resist. Smug. Sadistic. Satisfied. Urges.
― Upt0eleven, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 08:40 (seventeen years ago)
yeah, 4AD lost its identity when Rema-Rema broke up.
― Mackro Mackro, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 08:51 (seventeen years ago)
Where now for Michael J Sheehy?
― James Mitchell, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 09:36 (seventeen years ago)
RIP Too Pure.
― Scik Mouthy, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 09:48 (seventeen years ago)
Nah, Too Pure have sucked for a long time.
― Raw Patrick, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 10:24 (seventeen years ago)
I think whatever the 'identity' was that the label had (and I think it possessed one through most of the 90s) had drifted away in the last few years, but I still thought their actual hit rate re: good records was, well, good. I see how Hmmm, Future of the Left on 4AD... is sorta funny from a certain POV but it's not the same as if it had come about in like 1992
― DJ Mencap, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 10:59 (seventeen years ago)
4ad lost their identity when they released that fucking wretched paladins album. i think that was a black day for any kind of label loyalty one might posess
― electricsound, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 12:02 (seventeen years ago)
True, actually. At least I got that one for free.
This is all weird news. Beggars always seemed to have the predominant identity.
― Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 14:03 (seventeen years ago)
too bad Vaughan Oliver/Chris Bigg didn't get a crack at that Sterolab cover art!

All time greatest "label loses it's identity" release...
― Mark G, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 14:53 (seventeen years ago)
(In case you can't see it, the lower left logo is "Stax" for it was they..)
― Mark G, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 14:54 (seventeen years ago)
Does this mean there will finally be $$$ sitting around for The Fall reissues?
― Hadrian VIII, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 15:57 (seventeen years ago)
Both pretty good labels, 4AD as well.
― stephen, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 18:41 (seventeen years ago)
maybe 4ad should release the fall reissues, for added effect
― electricsound, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 23:41 (seventeen years ago)
This Mortal Fall

"Then I-uh DREAMED-uh... You DREAMED About me-uh..."
(Needless to say I want to hear such a thing so bad right now.)
Sad to see Too Pure go, but I haven't been that impressed with their roster (minus Electrelane who broke up anyways) in a long while.
― Bill in Chicago, Thursday, 1 May 2008 00:02 (seventeen years ago)
too pure's first 50 or so releases might be the best initial run of any label ever.
― keythkeyth, Thursday, 1 May 2008 05:15 (seventeen years ago)
This is true for me too, but the last Electrelane was my favourite yet, and between that, the Quique reissue (ok, this might not count), and a couple of 7"s (Ray Rumours!) I was struck recently that I'd bought more Too Pure records over the last year than in the rest of the 00s put together.
And all-time classic for the things they introduced me to in the 90s. Will go home and blast some of those Mouse on Mars releases for sure (well, Iaora Tahiti is already sitting on top of the hi-fi because I just got new speakers and the first batch of CDs for testing any new audio gear always includes either Mouse on Mars or Schlammpeitziger).
― a passing spacecadet, Thursday, 1 May 2008 09:30 (seventeen years ago)
Top 10 00s Beggars & Too Pure releases anyone? I haven't kept up with either label this decade! Aside from aforementioned Electrelane I don't think I've bought anything on either.
― Colonel Poo, Thursday, 1 May 2008 09:43 (seventeen years ago)
the Rothko album on Too Pure is good, though not their best. liked Mclusky during their brief but memorable existence. could that really be all?
― Mr. Hal Jam, Thursday, 1 May 2008 12:54 (seventeen years ago)
Bows and Monade have both released good records on Too Pure in the 00's...
― henry s, Thursday, 1 May 2008 12:57 (seventeen years ago)
wasn't the last Bows 1999?
― Mr. Hal Jam, Thursday, 1 May 2008 14:01 (seventeen years ago)
Cassidy was 2001...
― henry s, Thursday, 1 May 2008 14:11 (seventeen years ago)
Damnit, Ned OTM. I wanna hear The Fall do Song To The Siren.
"Touch me NOT-uh! Come back tah-morrow-uh"
Hell he could do it without accompaniment and I'd still love it.
― Bimble, Thursday, 1 May 2008 19:49 (seventeen years ago)
i wonder if it hugs back are now without label or will also be shoved over to the dumping grounds of 4ad?
the latter it seems. still, good to see this band keep on keeping on
― electricsound, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 06:52 (seventeen years ago)
i assume the too pure name is merely remaining in the short term to finish off the singles club at this point.. the last three of which have been pretty good, particularly the kaputt 45..
― electricsound, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 07:01 (seventeen years ago)
I would probably have sex with Beggars Banquet records, if given a choice.
― Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 07:45 (seventeen years ago)
^^^I wouldn't kick 'em out of bed for eating crackers...
― henry s, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 13:49 (seventeen years ago)
