I've been buying explicit Rap records since I was in middle school. But I was a college student when a cashier asked for my I.D., for the first time ever. I bought ARULAR by M.I.A. at the Borders in Tallahassee. The cashier was a female college student. "I'm sorry for the inconvenience," she said, "but I have to ask." I just laughed to myself, like, Wow, this is the first time.
From middle school to high school I bought records from Sam Goody.

Arular is an "explicit rap record"?
― The Brainwasher, Friday, 2 May 2008 01:17 (seventeen years ago)
I got carded for Anthrax "Attack of the Killer B's" when I was in 8th grade, so I just stole that shit*. I'm actually appalled to hear that this is still going on. What the fuck, world?
*from a Sam Goody** **where I later worked

Arular had an explict advisory sticker on it.

no, but I support 18+ stickers on records, because when I was a kid it really fueled my record obsession, and God knows I wouldn't want to have grown up without the opportunity to spend countless hours obsessively over meaningless details about records

somewhat related: My gf and her friend got carded while going to see an MA15+ film at the cinema a while back, they're both 26.

PA stickers are like a buyers guide for the 14 year old boy

I think Borders' policy is to card young people who try to buy "Explicit" recordings. Back in high school, I had a friend who was almost 18 (birthday in a couple of weeks) who went there to pick up whatever the latest Marilyn Manson lp (HolyWood I think) on day of release. She was carded and had to go home and get Mom to come with and buy it for her. Lout that I was (and still am), I laughed at her when I heard the story cause she could have gone down the street to Circuit City or Best Buy and gotten the disc w/no problem whatsoever. Which was how I did it then.

BTW, I remember that around the same time, Barnes & Noble used to keep certain releases "behind the counter," so you had to ask for them.

Ween's Pure Guava at age 14 or 15. Some dude at the store vouched for me.

I like writing notes on pornographic LPs like "MUST BE 21 TO PURCHASE." but the issue has never really come up.

And we have Tipper Gore to thank for this nonsense...
I'm 37 and was never carded at record stores ever. Trying to buy a porn mag at about 19 or 20 I was, though...

In the UK, no-one ever ever gets carded for buying music.
― Mark G, Friday, 2 May 2008 05:25 (seventeen years ago)
Huh. I've only heard of this happening to people who were obviously 13-15 and buying from Disc Jockey at the mall or something.
― RabiesAngentleman, Friday, 2 May 2008 05:33 (seventeen years ago)
more like "explicitly overrated record" amirite??
― stephen, Friday, 2 May 2008 19:13 (seventeen years ago)
in the '90 or so, a couple of kids approached me outside a Harmony House in Birmingham, Michigan and asked if they could give me money to buy them two 2 Live Crew tapes...of course they could!...and I did!
― henry s, Friday, 2 May 2008 19:29 (seventeen years ago)
I wasn't carded, but I was given a stern talking to by a cashier (Sam Goody, Montgomery Mall, Bethesda, MD) when purchasing the "Little Shop of Horrors" original motion picture soundtrack cassette, with something along the lines of "that's pretty grown up stuff; are you sure your parents are okay with this?" (I was 11 years old).

Never an issue for me - in fact, the only LP I can recall being made more-or-less unavailable was As Nasty As They Wanna Be which my just-turned-18 sister wanted but couldn't buy in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. (The province being anachronistically prudish back in '90 - just watch Madonna's "Truth or Dare" for ludicrous confirmation.) Turned out to be a non-issue for her, too, in the end - she just drove a mile south, crossed the border and bought it in more enlightened Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan! (Land of the free, etc.)
