I'll take summery relaxed muzak chilled crooning over wanky keyboard noodling and dull monotone vocals any day of the week.

Jesus I hate the Doors so fucking much.

Richard Ashcroft reminds me of Jim Morrison too oddly, anyone else get this?, and his song with the Chemical Brothers makes me want to vomit. It is the worst thing they've EVER EVER EVER done. Has anyone listened to the lyrics? I think he actually wrote about the first time he like, took acid, dude.

What an epiphany. Next time the Chems should just get the real Chris Rea for a duet.

Ronan, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not the first and won't be the last but I'll allow it might be the best.

(Sean/mark s: I would have categorised these two threads the other way around :) )

Jeff W, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, Ronan, you might like the corking 70s disco version of "Light My Fire" then....

Old Fart!!!!, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't heard Young's version yet but I've heard it's supposed to have exactly the same arrangement as Jose Feliciano's version...

Astrud Giberto did a fantastic version of Light My Fire. I actually like the song when I hear that version which is v.impressive considering my HATRED of the fuckin doors.

Ronan posts first interesting thread on nu-ILM for YONKS.

Graham, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Could hardly be worse than the original version by The Doors (whose self-titled album is among my 3 least favourite albums ever) or the Massive Attack version which is def the worst thing they ever recorded.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I really like that Massive Attack version and think it's probably the best thing on that album.

And, no, I'm not playing devil's advocate, I really think it's ace.

Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"I really like that Massive Attack version and think it's probably the best thing on that album"

Yah, fair, but that album truly sucked. It was bland and washy, and to tell the truth, the rest of it wasn't much better than "Light My Fire". Blue Lines and Mezzanine = classic, mind.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Al Green did the best version of Light My Fire

LOOK, WE'VE DONE THIS! grrr. Talk about Will Young or answer Ronan's actual question, which is about the Chemical Bros.

"LOOK, WE'VE DONE THIS! grrr. Talk about Will Young or answer Ronan's actual question, which is about the Chemical Bros"

No it wasn't. But anyway, I actually preferred Richard when he spouted Doors-ian hippy bullshit. Back when he was Mad Richard rather then Domestic Bliss Richard. He sux now, but the Verve records are great, especially when the songwriting skills of Ashcroft meet the psychedelic wibblings of McCabe head on. New Chems track is pants, I agree.

I haven't heard any covers of "Light My Fire" but I'd just like to get something out there:
I HATE THE DOORS.

Keiko, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Damn, is there anyone here who actually doesn't detest the Doors with a burning passion? (Me, I'm take-or-leave.)
Also, "The Test" is indeed blech. I wish they'd've left it instrumental.

Nate Patrin, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

C'mon baby, bite my wire. Try to set my pants on...FI-YORRR!

Sean Carruthers, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(actually i quite like the doors, come to think of it: with the exception of morrison as a singer...)

mark s, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

god yeah 'the test' is awful isn't it ? u should have heard zane lowe on xfm, warbling in exact time/tune with rich arsecroft at the start and sounding hillarious 'awwwwwwwwww am i comin thru, am i comin thru...'

sod off mate.

piscesboy, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually to revive this, has anyone seen the video for the Will Young version? What's going on there, it's like a perfume ad or something. Truly bizarre.

Ronan, Friday, 10 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You can see/hear a 30 second clip of the video/song here. They seem to be going for a 60s vibe with the video, don't they? And yes, José Feliciano is the primary model for Will's version, with a bit of Jim Morrison thrown in.

Jeff W, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i saw it on Top of the Pops - the arrangement is a note-for-note copy of the Feliciano one, and Will Young even tries to copy Feliciano's voice, and includes all his slight changes to the tune. i didn't really spot any Jim Morrison in his voice, but that's no bad thing ;)

(i remember hearing such a bad version of it once, with this awful cheesy lounge-style singer and hammond, and then after a minute or two i realised it was the Doors original...)

michael, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

three weeks pass...
I can only assume that most of you are gay which explains why you hate the Doors and love that little creeps version of the song. Will Youngs version grits my tits, it is so fucking cheesy and crap Im amazed anyone outside the gay community can bear to hear it

Andrew Mckie, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

gareth, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You people should chill out The Doors are legends, Will Young is a FUKWIT and most of you are imbiciles. And tomorrow all three statements will still be true no matter how much bullshit you morons talk.....

Jimmy Grimble, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"baby's got a temper"

cuba libre (nathalie), Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)
