I've heard of Namie since the 90s.. she was the crowning jewel princess of "awwww" J-pop. Well, you know, time goes by, and she ultra-dolls up.. however, the new triple single "60s 70s 80s" is an amazing concept, and the best stuff I've heard from a J-Pop diva in a long time (outside Shiina Ringo, who's not a "diva" per se... anyway)
Here's a YouTube link to Namie dancing/lipsyncing to all three songs, or edits of all three concatenated.
NEW LOOK(60s)
ROCK STEADY(70s)
WHAT A FEELING(80s)

I'm posting mainly because J-Pop is finally doing the opposite of jumping the shark. Once upon a time, it was more homogenous. (Tomoe Shinohara being an extreme exception by extremly coopting it... part of my whole thesis on Tomoe, but for another thread.) Sure, much of J-pop today is still sonic wall-of-sound corn syrup e.g. Kumi Koda, even though she has her exceptions too. However, when it's done right, well damn. Way to go, Namie.
"New Look" has a really sweet chorus. "Rock Steady" is the weakest of the three, being some sort of lite reggaetonish thing which is alright. "What A Feeling" is the winner. Electro verses, thumpin' choruses. I liked Janet's "Feedback", but "What A Feeling" pretty much stomps all over it.

Lots of people will disagree, but I think W's oldies covers (Koi no Fuga, Koi no Vacance, etc.) were similarly good.
Namie Amuro ranks high on my list of jpop I'm embarrassed I enjoy.
(Actually, the only jpop I can unreservedly say I like is Mini-Moni & Shinohara.)
Unless you want to call Naoko Nozawa jpop. Then she's obviously the best ever.
