the improbable RUSS BALLARD poll: god gave rock n roll to you, and a bunch of other stuff too

russ ballard. peripatetic songwriter for hire. sort of an odd career, little of this, little of that. lots of people did his songs. i like a bunch of them. NB: these are all songs he wrote. mostly performed by others, although he was in argent and produced and/or played on some of the others. an inevitably incomplete list. i really didn't know he wrote half of these. (the blazin squad track he apparently cowrote with his son. it's at least better than the awful eurovision entry.)

my short list is "since you been gone," "winning" and the frida song.

tipsy mothra, Saturday, 3 May 2008 08:02 (seventeen years ago)

although that hot chocolate song is pretty great too.

I'll always have a soft spot for the 80s pop-prog bombast of "voices" - and the video is amusingly nutso.

The Colin Blunstone one. I've never been able to make up my mind about whether I like "Liar" or not.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Saturday, 3 May 2008 09:45 (seventeen years ago)

Colin Blunstone.

A short piece on the goofy key change in Rainbow's "Since You've Been Gone" with a link to an mp3 of Ballard's original:

i love the sort of syncopated cadence of the verses in "winning," especially right where the second verse picks up over the end of the first one.

tipsy mothra, Saturday, 3 May 2008 19:16 (seventeen years ago)

I voted 3DN, but would have gone "God Gave Rock 'n' Roll to You" if you'd given the KISS version. Had no idea he wrote about half of these, including the Hot Chocolate, America, and Frida tunes.

yes, a n amazing list: i voted for ggr&rty simply because it's so ridiculous.

I won't turn off 'Voices' when it comes on the radio - gotta vote for that with a tip of the hat to 'Sonny Crockett!'

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

"Voices" comes on the radio? There was a video show on my local PBS station, and I saw that video as a teenager. I love that kind of Miami Vice existentialism.

Here's the video.

I missed this poll but would've voted for "You Can Do Magic" or "New York Groove" if that's the Ace Frehley song.

Eazy, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 23:05 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, ace frehley did that one too.

i wish someone would compile all this into a russ ballard best-of. but i suppose rhino wouldn't see much upside to that. i wonder how many of them are on itunes? i guess i could just make one myself.

tipsy mothra, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 23:18 (seventeen years ago)

I watched both the old video and the new remastered version of "Voices" on YouTube last night, and I'm not through with Russ Ballard yet.

Eazy, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 17:43 (seventeen years ago)

I'm bummed I missed this poll but it turned out about right in the end.

I want to get a tattoo that says I GOT THE KEY

Eazy, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 20:31 (seventeen years ago)

I was going to say: No Alanis? Then I found: wrong ballard.

Mark G, Thursday, 8 May 2008 09:24 (seventeen years ago)

Damn, I missed this. Would have been torn between "Since You Been Gone" and "I Don't Believe In Miracles".

That's a pretty good track record. He deserves one of those Ace Records comps, if it doesn't already exist.

Belated vote for You Can Do Magic, perfection in every way

a death in the rhubarb triangle (Matt #2), Wednesday, 16 April 2025 13:58 (five months ago)

Turns out to be good timing for a thread resurrection--Ballard's releasing a double CD on April 25 of new songs on one disc, and his own recordings of half of this poll on the other.
