The worst songs here are unusually bad while the best ones are still quite good. I quite like "Like a Prayer", but my vote goes to "Crackers International" since it contained "Stop!".

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 3 May 2008 23:11 (seventeen years ago)

This seems to need some bumping (Or was 1989 that bad?)

Geir Hongro, Monday, 5 May 2008 09:25 (seventeen years ago)

It was. "Pump Up The Jam" for me, though, but it wasn't easy to find something decent.

zeus, Monday, 5 May 2008 10:24 (seventeen years ago)

Back To Life, Like a Prayer and Eternal Flame are the only real classics here.

chap, Monday, 5 May 2008 12:12 (seventeen years ago)

'french kiss' sometimes sounds like the perfect house track. the orgasm/slow down kinda spoils it but otherwise it's hard to beat.

or something, Monday, 5 May 2008 21:59 (seventeen years ago)

"French Kiss" is kind of great for those of us who have no interest in danceability in electronica. :)

Geir Hongro, Monday, 5 May 2008 22:08 (seventeen years ago)

Horrible, horrible list! One of the worst years for chart pop. I'm gonna have to go with Black Box.

daavid, Monday, 5 May 2008 23:38 (seventeen years ago)

An impulse vote for KonKan, but by rights it probably should have been "Back To Life", "Like A Prayer" or "This Time I Know It's For Real".

mike t-diva, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 09:26 (seventeen years ago)

I always thought that KonKan was a blatant rip off of New Order, but no-one ever seemed to say so, until Barney mentioned it many years later.

Anyroad, I voted: Sydney Youngblood If Only I Could . It's a great track of that kind of thing.

Mark G, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 09:38 (seventeen years ago)

I am no fan of 1989 myself, but personally found it a slight step in the right direction after 87-88. Anyway, I consider 87-91 one of the weakest ever eras for music. At least after 1963.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 09:53 (seventeen years ago)

What Mike said.

Mark my office nine am tomorrow sharp.

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 10:54 (seventeen years ago)

i can't understand why you're not all voting for new kids on the block

DG, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 11:06 (seventeen years ago)

Sydney Youngblood EWW EWW EWW! Adding pop vocals to perfectly good house tracks (in this case Raze "Break 4 Love") is rarely a good idea (see also Degrees In Motion/Gat Decor).

mike t-diva, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 11:49 (seventeen years ago)

Oh, I did not know that.

Transfer mine to KonKan then...

Rock... Freak.... (from Rock Freak)

THAT'S RIGHT!! (from Get up and Boogie, Silver Convention)

Mark G, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 11:53 (seventeen years ago)

For ages (before it got in the charts) I thought "If Only I Could" was Rick Astley.

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 11:58 (seventeen years ago)

Still, Sydney was a better singing squaddie than Robson and Jerome.

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 11:58 (seventeen years ago)

"Like A Prayer" over "This Time I Know It's For Real," "Back To Life," "French Kiss," and "You Got It."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 13:21 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Monday, 12 May 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

Mark G, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 10:04 (seventeen years ago)

Where is Band Aid II band?

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 10:05 (seventeen years ago)

That version of "Do They Know It's Christmas" stayed in the Top 40 for around 4 weeks, I believe. It may have been a number one, but surely not an impressive chart performance anyway.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 12:18 (seventeen years ago)

On a sales basis it was the year's ninth biggest seller. Half a million advance orders for a start.

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 12:23 (seventeen years ago)

True. Lots of sales in one week or two, as usual close to Christmas. This chart is based upon calculating positions over a longer time period though, which awards longivety over short term sales.

This will also mean that the charts from the second half of the 90s will probably look considerably different from the list of #1s. Mainly containing those hits that developed over time ("Wonderwall", "Bitter Sweet Symphony", "Children") rather than those who went straight to number one and then dropped after a week or two.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 12:32 (seventeen years ago)

I guess a lot of sales happened after the final chart of the year (covering 23rd December and the days up to 1st Jan) for that particular tune...

Mark G, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 13:27 (seventeen years ago)

This is just so bad that I can't bring myself to vote for anything.

Nasty, Brutish & Short, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 15:50 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.
