first impressions: quite a lean record. fairly different from their debut in the way of instrumentation, and song structure -- the songs aren't as straightforward pop as they were on future perfect. a lot of different instruments and sounds at play here, which i think is an attempt at trying to avoid being pigeonholed in that silly "newgaze" grouping that they were first lumped in with. at times it feels as though the changes they've made aren't THAT drastic and that they might just be deconstructing the idea of shoegaze. playing with it, like someone like the sian alice group does.

sadly the drums are less prominent, but i'm just so glad to be hearing new autolux that i don't care too much at this point. the songs also seem less riffy, or guitar-driven, which is an interesting move. but i'm pretty excited by everything i'm hearing on it. will try and formulate some more solid opinions in the weeks to come.

They're playing in Hoboken, NJ at some point soon if anyone is interested.
