Spacemen 3 -vs- Loop FIGHT!!

The Spacemen 3 book touches on this in some detail - the story is that Hampson was working in the same studio where SP3 were recording at and helped himself to (for lack of a better description) SP3's public image. Instead of being just another band that listened to Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth, Husker Du, and all the latter day SST that everyone was namechecking, Loop recast themselves as "cooler" MC5/Krautrock/Suicide heads and got themselves a record deal and the cover of Melody Maker before SP3 did.

So in essence, just a quick fun poll to settle this legendary feud the ILM way. Vote for whichever band you prefer, explain/fight with each other in the comments. Poll ends in three days. GO!

Er, I mean two days...

stephen, Monday, 5 May 2008 19:07 (seventeen years ago)

I probably LOVE both about evenly.

Spencer Chow, Monday, 5 May 2008 19:08 (seventeen years ago)

Prefer Spacemen 3, but really just for The Perfect Prescription - maybe my single favorite late-80s U.K. record. If it weren't for that album, it'd be closer to a dead heat, and I might even go for Loop.

Looking back, the "beef" seems more than a little ridiculous. So, the one band influenced the other. So what? Sound of Confusion is the only Spacemen 3 record that sounds even remotely like Loop, and it's not even that close (though they did later go back to crush Loop at their own game with "Revolution").

Loop's strength was their consistency and economy. While Spacemen 3 went jumped from sound to sound, changing drastically with every album (sometimes successfully, sometimes not), Loop stuck with one very simple thing and refined it to its purest essence. Loop have less going on, and they take much smaller risks, but at least you know what you're gonna get.

I think this has to be Spacemen 3 by a pretty sizeable margin which is no slight agains Loop who are pretty great. But Spacemen 3 were more varied and interesting and prolific (and frankly nothing Loop released tops the Taking Drugs stuff and I'm not even sure that's the best Spacemen 3 album.) Spiritualized vs. Spectrum vs. Main would be a bit closer.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Creeztophair, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 23:19 (seventeen years ago)

Loop LOOKED Better, loads better. Mmmm, pointy cheslea boots and drainpipes....

flowersdie, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 10:57 (seventeen years ago)

I've got to pick Loop for this. I like S3, and can understand why everyone else would vote for them, but "Fade Out" totally rocks in a way that s3 never could manage.

Pashmina, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 10:59 (seventeen years ago)

spacemen 3 just never did it for me. loop.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 11:29 (seventeen years ago)

You are kidding me. As if this is even a competition. The first time Robert even took acid, Spacemen 3 gave it to them!

Masonic Boom, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 11:46 (seventeen years ago)

so it's like vampires, like loop are less powerful vampires because spacemen 3 made them and if we find whoever gave spacemen 3 their acid that band would be even better wow

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 12:29 (seventeen years ago)

Sonic Boom was way cool, but if I remember rightly the rest of Spacemen 3 were in various dreadful Midlands goth bands before they met him.

They sound much more different to each other than I remember, but for the obvious Suicide influence.

The Darkside were awful, too.

First, you gotta spell "FITE!" the ILM way, Stephen!

Myonga Vön Bontee, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 15:37 (seventeen years ago)

Bahaha - I was just thinking the same thing Myonga! But then I was like "well I don't want to offend Stephen..."

Bimble, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 17:18 (seventeen years ago)

First, you gotta spell "FITE!" the ILM way, Stephen!

HAHAH i had it that way at first, then changed it last minute. oops!

stephen, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 18:17 (seventeen years ago)

Loop rocked harder.

Soukesian, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 19:31 (seventeen years ago)

Yes, much harder. But unfortunately, they also rocked worse.

contenderizer, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 19:35 (seventeen years ago)

Hey, I'm afraid that'll do for me.

Soukesian, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 19:52 (seventeen years ago)

will, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 23:52 (seventeen years ago)

This is kinda like voting for velvet underground against iggy/stooges? no? I love em both.

csa, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 23:55 (seventeen years ago)

Sigh. I wish I could say I'm surprised...

Bimble, Thursday, 8 May 2008 03:11 (seventeen years ago)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 8 May 2008 20:30 (seventeen years ago)

four months pass...

Loop's "Sunburst" proves why Spacemen 3 can go suck it. I would like to thank Crut for making me fully aware of this fact.

Silver Cutout Brayzeens (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Saturday, 27 September 2008 05:03 (seventeen years ago)

Loop's "Sunburst" proves why Loop were fucking great. But Spacemen 3 were better.

ilxor, Saturday, 27 September 2008 16:47 (seventeen years ago)
