rider in the rain is best drinking song on any of these polls so far

i think Little Criminals is where the magic wore off for me. The song writing's still there for the most part, but it all that henley & frey (and I'm far from an Eagles hater!) and gloopy production kind of maims it.

"lonely at the top" my fave randy newman song (just over "marie"), and I think one of my top 2 or 3 songs period.

Dominique, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 00:59 (seventeen years ago)

"Burn On", it's got that classic Newman queasy-sounding string arrangement, like the song is about to puke or something.

Euler, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 02:03 (seventeen years ago)

Went with "Lonely at the Top" because it's the only one of the three that has anything resembling a light touch.

"Rider" fails by trying to be a little too yee-haw cutesy (using the Eagles does not help). And "Burn On" is an (atypical) one-joke song ripped from the headlines of...when did the Cuyahoga first catch fire, like the '40s? It proves that topical material isn't Newman's strength.

"Lonely" has just the right recipe of arrogance and self-pity.

The Deacon, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 20:23 (seventeen years ago)

are you seriously faulting randy newman for doing a song about something in the 40s? when did dude ever say he was trying to be topical? yeah dayton 1903 is such bullshit its not even 1903 nice job being "ripped from the headlines" homie

What's on the next one? "Uncle Bob's Midnight Blues"? "Christmas in Capetown"?
