fair AND balanced

David R., Monday, 5 May 2008 19:24 (seventeen years ago)

Radiohead joint

Dom Passantino, Monday, 5 May 2008 19:29 (seventeen years ago)

except for the shitty mike d joint and the kool g rap banger, any guest vocals on this were like all goth tendencies of the artists bumped up +2000%

we used to think this was some brave aesthetic and bump it in the car on the way to get lunch, which makes no sense when you realize how this is horrible driving music

mh, Monday, 5 May 2008 19:30 (seventeen years ago)

apparently later copies of this had "be there", a.k.a. stone roses joint, attached to the end. I think the beats were the same as unreal

mh, Monday, 5 May 2008 19:31 (seventeen years ago)

Didn't this album introduce the world to Badly Drawn Boy? Good work guys.

Dom Passantino, Monday, 5 May 2008 19:32 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, it was "unreal" + vocals

impudent harlot, Monday, 5 May 2008 19:32 (seventeen years ago)

impudent harlot, Monday, 5 May 2008 19:33 (seventeen years ago)

man, I need to lure my friend who has pretty much every mo'wax release on here so we can do a pre-psyence fiction unkle poll. japanese dudes and semi-acid jazz! I remember wondering a few years ago why Pharrell was turning into James Lavelle with the weird japanese collabo stuff and Nigo pimping

mh, Monday, 5 May 2008 19:34 (seventeen years ago)

i love the guitar on 'title theme' = pedal steel? wanna vote that, the electro one or 'chaos'

blueski, Monday, 5 May 2008 19:35 (seventeen years ago)

The Ian Brown one is the best thing they did, but that's not on the album, is it?

chap, Monday, 5 May 2008 19:50 (seventeen years ago)

man wtf i never heard that its str8 garbage

and what, Monday, 5 May 2008 19:50 (seventeen years ago)

the instrumental >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> stone roses dude wailing on it

that clip cuts off, here's the longer one with the spooky ending: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=X3VDibA6HCQ

blueski, Monday, 5 May 2008 19:55 (seventeen years ago)

james lavelle's take on vocalists is like EPIC GOTH vocals, I can just imagine him hassling his producer du jour to add more reverb

mh, Monday, 5 May 2008 19:55 (seventeen years ago)

should've just added more Boba Fett samples instead of Brownie

blueski, Monday, 5 May 2008 19:56 (seventeen years ago)

I was really just waiting for an unkle album that was just a re-edited 45 minute version of the blade runner end credits, but it never happened

mh, Monday, 5 May 2008 19:59 (seventeen years ago)

I think this album (and to a lesser degree Dr. Octagon) was the exact moment where my halfhearted interest in DJ Shadow-type techno rap soured and I was like fuck this shit, just straight up rap and occasional d'n'b for me. I might've been into a couple tracks but I can't remember which ones now.

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 5 May 2008 19:59 (seventeen years ago)

Who does the voice over on that Ball Buster commercial? Is it Orson Welles?

James Mitchell, Monday, 5 May 2008 20:08 (seventeen years ago)

kool g rap banger

keep the block hotter than jalapeños

deej, Monday, 5 May 2008 20:18 (seventeen years ago)

Gotta be the theme song or Celestial Annihilation, the vocals on this album pretty much suck except for Kool G Rap.

Tuomas, Monday, 5 May 2008 20:38 (seventeen years ago)

I love the "bittersweet symphony part 2" song.

HI DERE, Monday, 5 May 2008 20:41 (seventeen years ago)

I think this album...was the exact moment where my halfhearted interest in DJ Shadow-type techno rap soured

For me it was exactly the same, but it was a great ride while it lasted.

Euler, Monday, 5 May 2008 22:27 (seventeen years ago)

why would you do this

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 00:00 (seventeen years ago)

I'd never heard the Brown-ized "Unreal" until today. IT SUCKS

Z S, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 00:09 (seventeen years ago)

I actually really like the shitty guitar/bass loop in Bloodstain.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 00:45 (seventeen years ago)

I enjoy UNKLE more when I pretend that it was an extra-curricular project by some band students.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 01:17 (seventeen years ago)

this is dope actually http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkRmRZWczhA

and what, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 01:22 (seventeen years ago)

God DAMN that break in "Unreal"/"Be There" is hot.

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 01:31 (seventeen years ago)

kool g rap banger takes it, but the Badly Drawn Boy track was actually pretty good

james lavelle's take on vocalists is like EPIC GOTH vocals, I can just imagine him hassling his producer du jour to add more reverb

the live version of UNKLE was total wall of DOOM DOOM DOOMY GUITARS, like a cross between Josh Homme du jour and the worst Sisters Of Mercy cover band ever

energy flash gordon, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 01:38 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Saturday, 17 May 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

Lonely Souls doesn't sound like Bittersweet Symphony.

billstevejim, Sunday, 18 May 2008 05:12 (seventeen years ago)

And I still like "Be There" because I heard this version 1st. I remember watching the video for this and "Rabbit" for the 1st time on 120 minutes and being pretty blown away.

billstevejim, Sunday, 18 May 2008 05:19 (seventeen years ago)

i really like this album.

also, i have pretty much every mo'wax record.

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 18 May 2008 08:54 (seventeen years ago)

what was the case against this album, again?

i'm trying to decide between:

kool g rap banger / bittersweet symphony pt 2 / shitty mike d joint / chaos / radiohead joint

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 18 May 2008 08:55 (seventeen years ago)

I'm going for bittersweet pt 2 as I heard it on an advert recently and thought "oh yeah that was when you could like Mo'wax in public"

the video for rabbit >>>> all other Unkle things ever.

except perhaps the science fiction film soundtrack mix they did live at the ICA.

thirteen years pass...

looks like I'm stuck re-discovering this album every dozen or so years.

poppers fueled buttsex crescendo (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 18 March 2024 21:10 (one year ago)

the rabbit in your headlights video was directed by Jonathan Glazer!

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Tuesday, 19 March 2024 14:06 (one year ago)

and the song was remixed by david axelrod.*

(great album! i love 'lonely soul' however 'bittersweet symphony pt 2' made me giggle.)

*extreme sidebar: ashcroft shows up years later to sing on a rendition of 'holy are you' (originally by the electric prunes) for axe's live album. it's good, check it out!

interstellar anthropologist+music philosopher, (Austin), Tuesday, 19 March 2024 14:32 (one year ago)

great album, it’s really grown on me over the years
