totally in love with this band
― J0rdan S., Monday, 5 May 2008 20:16 (seventeen years ago)
i guess they slot in with bands like times new viking and the mae shii but whenever i listen to them my mind always slots them in mood at least as like a punk version of panda bear, way more beachy and summery than grimy
― J0rdan S., Monday, 5 May 2008 20:18 (seventeen years ago)
their new album is called ICE CREAM SPIRITUAL and the single is called CELEBRATE THE BODY ELECTRIC
the cover of the single looks like this http://www.loshadka.org/ken/uploads/Work/Celebrate1.jpg
― J0rdan S., Monday, 5 May 2008 20:19 (seventeen years ago)
it sounds like they string their guitars with dental floss and rubber bands and are fronted by the mario kart characters <3 <3

well, i was gonna post the stream of the album via Whiney-despot website, Paper Thin Walls, (since i did the band interview) but it was only up for last week.

― J0rdan S., Friday, 20 June 2008 18:44 (seventeen years ago)
i think maybe my fav part of the album is in the middle of "beg waves", where the drums drop out (i think) and it sounds like she's kind of spasming. its kind of impossible to describe her singing i guess but she makes v cool sounds in this part im talking about
― J0rdan S., Friday, 20 June 2008 18:46 (seventeen years ago)
eay tour heart out marnie stern
― Zeno, Friday, 20 June 2008 18:47 (seventeen years ago)
You guys have got to be kidding me. The band is good but that little bridge troll that fronts the act is a deal-breaker for me.
― brightscreamer, Saturday, 21 June 2008 00:11 (seventeen years ago)
i have a feeling these dudes would take "bridge troll" as a compliment
this really is a fucking FUN album - great for driving (see j0rdan's above mario kart comment , so OTM)
gotta love the part that goes "OOH NOOO I'M LATE FOR SCHOOOOOOL!!"
love this shit

When I saw them two years ago, almost all the women in the audience wanted to adopt the lead singer as their little sister.

it's funny that even at that, they are similiar to deerhoofhttp://www.exclaim.ca/images/up-ponytail.jpg

xp Zeno: except the lead singer of Deerhoof is older than a fair number of their audience now.

If it has the songs they were playing in 2007 when I saw them, then it should be.

just got ice cream spiritual in the mail, listening, like it!
― i like to fart and i am crazy (gbx), Saturday, 25 April 2009 02:08 (sixteen years ago)
i got a promo copy of ice cream spiritual last year, which sat neglected on my desk for months. after some friends went on about them, i managed to migrate it to my hard drive and ipod -- where it has somehow remained completely unlistened to until tonight, when i opened this thread.
first impression is favorable. as someone who loves both times new viking and marnie stern (namechecked upthread), i don't like it as much as either of those. but "late for school" is a straight-up jam.

― werner herzomg (samosa gibreel), Monday, 9 August 2010 18:18 (fifteen years ago)
i would have loved to have heard a third ponytail lp but it's understandable you might feel limited in a band like theirs. so fitting that dude is now drumming for the boredoms XD
― werner herzomg (samosa gibreel), Monday, 9 August 2010 18:19 (fifteen years ago)
at least to called it off at the peak
― Zeno, Monday, 9 August 2010 20:19 (fifteen years ago)
they called
first BYOP, now ponytail
i understand the one dude going to play in the boredoms, but i don't really understand why you'd want to dissolve a band like this, none of their solo shit is gonna be nearly as well known -- i guess being in a band is that suffocating creatively? idk
― J0rdan S., Monday, 9 August 2010 20:22 (fifteen years ago)
"none of their solo shit is gonna be nearly as well known"
true, but they can join/start other bands as well
― Zeno, Monday, 9 August 2010 20:23 (fifteen years ago)
well isn't one of them also going to "find themselves"?
― pies. (gbx), Monday, 9 August 2010 20:25 (fifteen years ago)
i'm not sure where they would develop in terms of sound if they made another reecord.they were, in a way, a one trick pony band (even if a very good one)
― Zeno, Monday, 9 August 2010 20:26 (fifteen years ago)
obviuosly i'm sad one of my favourite bands broke up, but i don't know if i would want another album jsut like ice cream spiritual or kamehameha. i like kamehameha but ics is the same thing done just a little bit better and now there is no reason to listen to the former. but i would love to have heard them do something a bit different. i guess they weren't feeling that they had another worthwhile album in them?
― to be rill rill (samosa gibreel), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 01:40 (fifteen years ago)
fans of ponytail will maaaaaaaybe like this mi ami album?
i'm not totally in love with it yet, and the vocalist is certainly not as easy to love as ms ponytail. but if you can imagine yourself able to handle a bit more noisy, punk and drum-based working of a pretty similar sound it's worth checking out
― to be rill rill (samosa gibreel), Saturday, 14 August 2010 11:19 (fifteen years ago)
the new aids wolf (ugh) song sounds super ponytailesque. way moreso than their other stuff in any case. still shit though

― samosa gibreel, Thursday, 9 September 2010 15:24 (fifteen years ago)
i would probably like this band a lot more if the vocalist didn't weird me out so much. imo she takes it one level further into cringe-world than aor or chinese star's vocalists. i love their guitar goings-on. that's all changed now, though, this album is the last with dual guitars & they are now a one-guitarist band with like loads of pedals and shit and apparently it's a big mess.
― samosa gibreel, Thursday, 9 September 2010 15:27 (fifteen years ago)
idk anything about this band but every time this thread gets bumped i get this fab song stuck in my head

have heard different things, like that they have no plans for touring or anything beyond releasing this album, but really who knows. i'm sure as the record comes out that'll get clarified more.

Ecstatic Sunshine... Sry.
easy peasy
i think this is pretty great. a bit less erratic & manic esp the guitars. the boredoms influence is still totally there but now more sr7 & the later, more drawn out stuff
― flopson, Friday, 4 March 2011 19:25 (fourteen years ago)
loving the new dustin wong record (at least what I've heard of it). totally fun.
― tylerw, Wednesday, 15 February 2012 23:25 (thirteen years ago)
This one is really cool. "On/In The Way" sounds like a Steve Reich phase piece with High Life-style guitars. (bad description!).

― my jaw left (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 4 November 2014 15:15 (ten years ago)
Love everything Dustin has done, but his guitar riffs on the last Ponytail album haven't been matched. He took everything to such beautiful heights. That album was such a great swan song, but I wanted more.
