Eminem: "Stan"

"Come to think about, his name was.. it was you
Damn!"

Harry Chapin: "Cats in the Cradle"

"And as I hung up the phone it occurred to me
He'd grown up just like me
My boy was just like me"

Ones that count for half-a-point

the last rap couplet from "Mind is Playing Tricks On Me" that involves the narrator punvhing a man before realizing he was just hitting the pavement.

"Fool in the Rain"

max, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 00:24 (seventeen years ago)

Alice Cooper - "The Awakening"

"getting up, from my easy chair, looking for my wife...

following a trail of crimson spots, that lead into the night...

suddenly I realize, I see it all though real eyes
these crimson spots are dripping from my hand...

and ooooh, it makes me feel like a man..."

henry s, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 00:26 (seventeen years ago)

I went up to this girl
she said "Hi, my name Sheena"
I thought she'd be good to go with a little funk cold medina,
she said "I'd like a drink", I said "ok, I'll go get it"
and then a couple of sips, she cold licked her lips and I knew that she was
with it
so I took her to my crib
and everything went well as planned
but when she got undressed it was big old mess
Sheena was a man

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 00:28 (seventeen years ago)

I pushed her away. I walked to the door.
I fell to the floor. I got down on my knees.
I looked at her, and she at me.
Well that's the way that I want it to stay.
I always want it to be that way for my Lola.
Lo lo lo Lola.

I got a funny feeling like something was real wrong
Looked at her shoes and her feets was real long
Then it hit me oh please God no
Don't let this ho turn out to be a john doe
He pulled a fast one on me yo
I guess that's one of those things that make you go: shit!

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 00:42 (seventeen years ago)

There really could be entire message boards dedicated to rappers finding out their date is a man. Eazy's "Nobody Move," one of EPMD's "Janes," etc forever

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 00:45 (seventeen years ago)

My dick was harder than a bulletproof vest
She started pourin' baby oil on her chest
And then she said, "Gimme gimme gimme"
Jumped on my Jimmy, and rode me like the Wild West
I almost passed out, then the front door cold bust in
It was her fuckin' husband, six-foot ten
I knew my life would soon end

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 00:45 (seventeen years ago)

So I waited with high hopes, then she walked in the place.
I knew her smile in an instant, I knew the curve of her face.
It was my own lovely lady, and she said, "Oh, it's you."
And we laughed for a moment, and I said, "I never knew"..

So I ran down and I said, in her good ear, "Debbie, why'd you do it?" She raised her head, smiled, and said "I - I did it for Johnny." Johnny? Well like who's Johnny? Answer me, Debbie, who's Johnny? Does anybody here know Johnny? Are you Johnny? There was one guy named Johnny but he was a total geek, he always had food in his braces. Answer me, Debbie, who's Johnny? Oh God this is like that movie Citizen Kane you know where you later find out Rosebud was a sled? But we'll never know who Johnny was because like she's dead.

Wake up Charlie, rise and shine
Pour the tea, I'll draw the blind
Sunlight halo, you look wonderful
Darling Charlie, pale and deathly still
For heaven's sake, wake up Charlie

Was a full moon last night
I was full of bravado.
Dead drunk, dead sure, one of us had to go
Raised my head in anger, hurt you again
Dust to dust, and fire to ashes you can
Thank me for nothing now Charlie

I was eaten up with jealousy
Bones to pick and rumours to feed
How my heart bleeds, love's a big mistake
Mercy Charlie oh for pity's sake
Forgive me, speak to me, Charlie

Wake up Charlie rise and shine
Pour the tea, I'll draw the blind
Sunlight halo you look wonderful
Darling Charlie, pale and deathly still
For heaven's sake, wake up Charlie

Hideous Lump, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 02:10 (seventeen years ago)

OK, actually it's not the narrator who comes to the startling realization in that one, it's the audience.

Hideous Lump, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 02:11 (seventeen years ago)

My head was about to explode
When I noticed the Marshall stacks
I noticed all the smoke machines
Cameras and the lights
Some guy with a microphone
Runnin' around dancin' in tights
And I noticed the crew
And the band playin' down below
And I realized I was in a rock video

Hideous Lump, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 02:14 (seventeen years ago)

fresh prince

He had a "date was a man" line in one of the early singles too, I think. Also Fatlip's verse in Oh Shit:

"I want to see my family
My wife and child waiting for me
I've got to go home
I've been so alone, you see

When I walked through the door
My wife she lay upon the floor
And with tears her eyes were sore
I did not know why
Then I looked into her hand
And I saw the telegram
That said that I was a brave, brave man
But that I was dead"

Just for the record let's get the story straight
Me and Uncle Tom were fishin' it was gettin'
Pretty late
Out on a cypress limb above the wishin' well
Where they say it got no bottom say it take
You down to Hell
Over in the bushes and off to the right
Come two men talkin' in the pale moonlight
Sheriff John Brady and Deputy Hedge
Haulin' two limp bodies down to the water's edge
I know a secret down at Uncle Tom's Cabin oh yea
I know a secret that I just can't tell
They didn't see me and Tom in the tree
Neither one believin' what the other could see
Tossed in the bodies let 'em sink on down
To the bottom of the well
Where they'd never be found
I know a secret down at Uncle Tom's cabin oh yea
I know a secret that I just can't tell
I know a secret down at Uncle Tom's Cabin
Know a secret that I just can't tell
I know a secret down at Uncle Tom's Cabin
Know who put the bodies in the wishin' well
Soon as they were gone me & Tom got down
Prayin' real hard that we wouldn't make a sound
Runnin' through the woods back to Uncle Tom's shack
Where the full moon shines through the roof tile cracks
Oh my God Tom who are we gonna tell
The sheriff he belongs in a prison cell
Keep your mouth shut that's what we're gonna do
Unless you wanna wind up in the wishin' well too
I know a secret down at Uncle Tom's Cabin
Know a secret that I just can't tell
I know a secret down at Uncle Tom's Cabin
Know who put the bodies, know who put the bodies
in the wishin' well

I almost had a heart attack that day
Come to find out the girl was a twelve-year-old runaway
I was arrested, the car was impounded
There was no way for me to avoid being grounded

xhuxk, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 12:53 (seventeen years ago)

It was Saturday Night and I was feelin kinda funny.
Gold around my neck, pockets full of money.
Went to the corner, man who did I see?
But the super bad bitch lookin back at me.
I said, `Fly lady, man, you got a big butt`
Bitch turned around, all she said was, `What?`
I said, `My name is Schoolly baby, I`m down with the Shores`,
before I knew it up came my boys.
Noisy as hell and drunk as shit,
sayin, `Yo Schoolly Schooll, what time is it?`
Looked a little closer and I knew it was gag,
what I thought was a girl was nothin but a fag.

xhuxk, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 12:56 (seventeen years ago)

Oh, Katie, if you can hear me,
I just can't wait to have you near me.
I can only think,
Where are you,
What ya do, may be there's someone new.

And Mama said to me "Child, what's happened to your appetite?"
"I've been cookin' all morning and you haven't touched a single bite"
"That nice young preacher, Brother Taylor, dropped by today"
"Said he'd be pleased to have dinner on Sunday, oh, by the way"
"He said he saw a girl that looked a lot like you up on Choctaw Ridge"
"And she and Billy Joe was throwing somethin' off the Tallahatchie Bridge"

xhuxk, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 13:08 (seventeen years ago)

And you may ask yourself
What is that beautiful house?
And you may ask yourself
Where does that highway go?
And you may ask yourself
Am I right? ...am I wrong?
And you may tell yourself
My god!...what have I done?

More Alice:

I grabbed my hat and I got my coat and I I ran into the street
I saw a man that was choking there I guess he couldn't breathe
Said to myself this is very strange I'm glad it wasn't me
But now I hear those sirens callin' and so I am not free

xhuxk, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 13:23 (seventeen years ago)

I tried to understand this
I thought that they were out of their minds
How could I be so foolish (How could I)
To not see I was the one behind
So still I kept on fighting
Well, losing every step of the way
I said, I must go back there (I got to go back)
And check to see if things still the same
Yeah they was dancin' and singin' and movin' to the groovin'
And just when it hit me somebody turned around and shouted
Play that funky music white boy
Play that funky music right
Play that funky music white boy
Lay down the boogie and play that funky music till you die

And he said: "Son, this world is rough
And if a man's gonna make it, he's gotta be tough
And I knew I wouldn't be there to help ya along.
So I give ya that name and I said goodbye
I knew you'd have to get tough or die
And it's the name that helped to make you strong."

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 14:43 (seventeen years ago)

haha, but the real twist/moment of realization is in the last lines!

And I think about him, now and then,
Every time I try and every time I win,
And if I ever have a son, I think I'm gonna name him
....oh, Bill or George, any damn thing but Sue!

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 15:02 (seventeen years ago)

And then one day things weren't quite so fine
I fell in love with Lily
I asked my dad where Lily I could find
He said, 'Son, now don't be silly'

'She's been dead since 1929'
Oh, how I cried that night
If only I'd been born in Lily's time
It would have been alright

The hallway, got real loud and crowded
They walked right past us
I don't know how they allowed it
The funny thing about it
Through all the excitement
They Range got towed, they double parked by a hydrant
Stupid motherfuckers.

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 15:05 (seventeen years ago)

Not sung from the narrator's pov, though most of the song is up until the end:

He went down to the woodshed
they came down hard on his head
gagged and bound and left for dead
when he woke she was gone with his car and all his money.

Gukbe, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 15:51 (seventeen years ago)

I was tired of my lady
We'd been together too long
Like a worn-out recording
Of a favorite song
So while she lay there sleeping
I read the paper in bed
And in the personal columns
There was this letter I read

"If you like Pina Coladas
And getting caught in the rain
If you're not into yoga
If you have half a brain
If you'd like making love at midnight
In the dunes on the Cape
Then I'm the love that you've looked for
Write to me and escape."

I didn't think about my lady
I know that sounds kind of mean
But me and my old lady
Have fallen into the same old dull routine
So I wrote to the paper
Took out a personal ad
And though I'm nobody's poet
I thought it wasn't half bad

"Yes I like Pina Coladas
And getting caught in the rain
I'm not much into health food
I am into champagne
I've got to meet you by tomorrow noon
And cut through all this red-tape
At a bar called O'Malley's
Where we'll plan our escape."

So I waited with high hopes
And she walked in the place
I knew her smile in an instant
I knew the curve of her face
It was my own lovely lady
And she said, "Oh it's you."
Then we laughed for a moment
And I said, "I never knew."

That you like Pina Coladas
Getting caught in the rain
And the feel of the ocean
And the taste of champagne
If you'd like making love at midnight
In the dunes of the Cape
You're the lady I've looked for
Come with me and escape

BigLurks, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 15:53 (seventeen years ago)

I was about to post that, but Noodle Vague beat us both to the punch. THE classic startling realization song though.

Gukbe, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 15:54 (seventeen years ago)

This was the first one I thought of, but on reading, it'snot the narrator's realisation, but the guy she picked up at the start's;

It was a rainy night
When he came into sight,
Standing by the road,
No umbrella, no coat.
So I pulled up alongside
And I offered him a ride.
He accepted with a smile,
So we drove for a while.
I didnt ask him his name,
This lonely boy in the rain.
Fate, tell me its right,
Is this love at first sight?
Please dont make it wrong,
Just stay for the night.

All I wanna do is make love to you
Say you will
You want me too
All I wanna do is make love to you
Ive got lovin arms to hold on to

So we found this hotel,
It was a place I knew well
We made magic that night.
Oh, he did everything right
He brought the woman out of me,
So many times, easily
And in the morning when he woke all
I left him was a note
I told him
I am the flower you are the seed
We walked in the garden
We planted a tree
Dont try to find me,
Please dont you dare
Just live in my memory,
Youll always be there

All I wanna do is make love to you
One night of love was all we knew
All I wanna do is make love to you
Ive got lovin arms to hold on to

Oh, oooh, we made love
Love like strangers
All night long
We made love

Then it happened one day,
We came round the same way
You can imagine his surprise
When he saw his own eyes
I said please, please understand
Im in love with another man
And what he couldnt give me
Was the one little thing that you can

All I wanna do is make love to you
One night of love was all we knew
All I wanna do is make love to you
Say you will, you want me too

All night long
All night long
All night long
All night long

Scik Mouthy, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 15:59 (seventeen years ago)

Last night as I got home about a half past ten
There was the woman I thought I knew
In the arms of another man
I kept my cool, I ain't no fool
Let me tell you what happened then
I packed some clothes and I walked out
And I ain't going back again

CHORUS:

So take a letter Maria, address it to my wife
Say I won't be coming home, gonna start a new life
So take a letter Maria, address it to my wife
Send a copy to my lawyer, gotta start a new life

You've been many things but most of all a good secretary to me
And it's times like this I feel you've always been close to me
Was I wrong to work nights to try to build a good life
All work and no play has just cost me a wife

CHORUS

When a man loves a woman it's hard to understand
That she would find more pleasure in the arms of another man
I never really noticed how sweet you are to me
It just so happens I'm free tonight
Would you like to have dinner with me

xhuxk, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 16:01 (seventeen years ago)

(I saw you)
Hey hey baby how ya doin' come on in here
(Walking in the rain)
Got some hot chocolate on the stove waiting for you
Listen first things first let me hang up the coat
(You were holding hands and I'll)
Yeah how was your day today
Did you miss me
(Never be the same)
You did? Yeah? I missed you too
I missed you so much I followed you today
(I saw you)
That's right now close your mouth
'Cause you cold busted
(Walking in the rain)
Now just sit down here, sit down here
I'm so upset with you I don't know what to do
(You were holding hands and I'll)
You know my first impulse was to run up on you
And do a Rambo
(Never be the same)
I was about to jam you and flat blast both of you
But I didn't wanna mess up this thirt-seven hundred dollar lynx coat
So instead I chilled -- That's right chilled

xhuxk, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 16:03 (seventeen years ago)

Lotta verbiage here...I'll keep it simple:

Ethel, is that you, Ethel? Say it isn't so Ethel! You get your clothes on! Ethel, you shameless hussy!

Either you recognize it or you don't.

oh rats, didn't catch his post. Still, I think the whole thing deserves to be posted.

BigLurks, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 16:32 (seventeen years ago)

There's the subset of these songs where the final chorus reflects the reversal that the character has experienced: e.g., Escape, Coward of the County, etc.

thing is, for a long time i simply assumed the narrator of "love vigilantes" was alive and that it was an army bureaucracy mix-up that had led to the telegram being sent :/

grimly fiendish, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 16:37 (seventeen years ago)

I think there are a few plot twists in Trapped in the Closet.

dad a, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 16:38 (seventeen years ago)

anyway, this:

I was standing in the station
being pounded by the rain
so I chose the last compartment
of a stationary train
I felt someone get in behind me
but I never caught their eye
but I thought I heard I heard a woman's voice
whispering goodbye

So I lay down in the darkness
with the beer and coffee stains
and I stared out at the thunder
through the broken window panes
And although the storm was booming
like an engine in the sky
I'm sure I heard a woman's voice cry

Don't wanna be under your thumb forever
Don't wanna be under your thumb forever
Don't wanna be under your thumb
it's over and done
I'll never be under your thumb forever

So I rolled myself a cigarette
and smoked it on my own
but it didn't stop the whispers
or the smell of her cologne
Then she rose up out of nowhere
and her hair was full of steam
and she stuck her head out the window
and screamed and screamed, she screamed!

Don't wanna be under your thumb forever
Don't wanna be under your thumb forever
Don't wanna be under your thumb
it's over and done
I'll never be under your thumb forever

So I picked up an old newspaper to read
and I noticed something very strange indeed
So I looked a little closer
and it chilled me to the bone
"Woman throws herself from speeding train,
identity unknown"
But I recognized the picture of
the woman who was dead
and underneath the picture it said

Don't wanna be under your thumb forever ...

Loudon Wainwright: My Biggest Fan

I can't find the lyrics online, but it's about his "biggest fan, a 400 pound man" there's lots of fat jokes, talking about how the fan knows everything about his career.

Then in the last verse it's revealed that the fan likes Dylan and Neil Young better, forcing Loudon to come to grips with his place in the musical pecking order..."I'm his third man"

J. Geils Band "Centerfold"

"The days go by, I'm looking through a girlie magazine,
And there's my homeroom angel on the pages in between!"

Maltodextrin, Friday, 9 May 2008 02:03 (seventeen years ago)

Also "No Anchovies Please"

"There sure is something familiar about that bowling ball."

Maltodextrin, Friday, 9 May 2008 02:04 (seventeen years ago)

The days years go by, I'm looking through a girlie magazine...

Maltodextrin, Friday, 9 May 2008 02:10 (seventeen years ago)

So now...now that I've found you
On this such a joyous day
I tell you it was me who killed him
But the truth I'll never have to say
Buenas tardes amigo
Hola, my good friend
Cinco de Mayo's on Tuesday
And I hoped we'd see each other again
Yes, I hoped we'd see each other again

rogermexico., Friday, 9 May 2008 02:12 (seventeen years ago)

Oh crap, that's the one where the singer MAKES a startling REVELATION. Sorryfoax carry on.

rogermexico., Friday, 9 May 2008 02:13 (seventeen years ago)

(Chorus)
Mama hated diesel so bad
I guess I knew it was something to do with Dad
The first time I seen her cry
Was after one of them things went by
Mama hated diesel so bad

I remember hearing those semi gearing down
My mom and me we used to live on the high-grade end of town
I sure like them white freightliners
But there was something in Mama's eye
When she catch me watching the road
Lord a little bitty piece of her died

Chorus

(Spoken)
As the years passed and I grew older
Mama did too
Pretty soon she stopped singing and laughing
Why she'd hardly even eat.
And I began staying away from home on the weekdays
I wouldn't come home from school 'til way past dark
I was too busy having some kind of fun
Either messing around with some gal
Or hanging around the local truck stop
Talking to my buddies about all the big rigs
That all the time were rolling in
And talking about all the crazy places we never been
Like California
Oh one day the county sheriff come up to me
He said they found my mama wandering
All by herself in the middle of the highway crying
She was trying of all things Lord
To flag down one of those big old rigs with a pocket handkerchief
Well that left me on my own
I got a job unloading rigs at the local freight yard
Pretty soon I had a rig of my own
And I left my hometown on my very first run to Frisco
Well that was three years ago today
And I ain't been back home in all that time since then 'til now

(Sing)
Now it's me and the local preacher
Standing in the graveyard grass
Staring down at the highway
Watching those big boys pass
Well he laid his hand upon me
And he prayed for quite some time
But I could barely understand the words he said
Behind that highway's whine

Then he handed me a faded photograph
He said he found it in my mama's hand
He said "Son I'm afraid that you and this picture
Were the best your Mama ever had"
Well I looked down at that picture
It was Mama and some guy
Standing in front of a semi-truck
"Just Married" painted on the side.

Chorus

Wireless enthusiast intercepts government secret radio band and
uncovers secrets and scandals of deceitful type proportions.

Aghast goes next door to his neighbor, secretly excited, as
aforementioned was a hunter whom radio enthusiast wanted
friendship and favor of.

A new face in hell

Nearly a new face in hell!

A muscular, thick-skinned, slit-eyed neighbor is at the table
poisoned just thirty seconds before by parties who knew of
wireless operator's forthcoming revelation.

A new face in hell!

A prickly line of sweat covers enthusiast's forehead as the
realization hits him
that the same government him and his now
dead neighbor voted for and backed and talked of on cream porches
have tricked him into their war against the people who enthusiast
and dead hunter would have wished torture on. A servant of
government walks in and arrests wireless fan in
kitchen for murder of his neighbor

A new face in hell!

The dead cannot contradict
Sometimes the living cannot

A new face in hell!

"City Drops into the Night" by Jim Carroll

It's when the sneak thieves are checkin'
They're checkin the alleys for unlocked doors
And Billy's sister's gettin' frantic 'cause
'Cause Billy's sister's little brother can't score
It's when the woman from the dream is . . .
Oh my God! That's the woman on the floor

Driving in to darlington county
Me and wayne on the fourth of july
Driving in to darlington county
Looking for some work on the county line
We drove down from new york city
Where the girls are pretty but they just want to know your name
Driving in to darlington city
Got a union connection with an uncle of wayne's
We drove eight hundred miles without seeing a cop
We got rock and roll music blasting off the t-top singing

Sha la la la la la la la la, sha la la la la la la

Hey little girl standing on the corner
Todays your lucky day for sure all right
Me and my buddy were from new york city
We got two hundred dollars we want to rock all night
Girl youre looking at two big spenders
Why the world dont know what me and wayne might do
Our pas each own one of the world trade centers
For a kiss and a smile I'll give mine all to you
Come on baby take a seat on my fender
It's a long night and tell me what else were you gonna do
Just me and you we could

Sha la la...

Little girl sitting in the window
Ain't seen my buddy in seven days
County man tells me the same thing
He don't work and he don't get paid
Little girl you're so young and pretty
Walk with me and you can have your way
And we'll leave this darlington city
For a ride down that dixie highway

Driving out of darlington county
My eyes seen the glory of the coming of the lord
Driving out of darlington county
Seen wayne handcuffed to the bumper of a state trooper's ford

"Down Under" by Men at Work is a song in which the narrator comes to a startling realization at the start of each chorus.

But here I am - I guess actions speak louder than words."

This was/is a good one.

[..]And they wanted to test him, before business started
Suggested raping a bitch to proof he was cold hearted[..]

So Billy yoked her up and grapped the chick by the hair
And dragged her into a lobby that had nobody there
She struggled hard but they forced her to go up the stairs
They got to the roof and then held her down on the ground
Screaming, "Shut the fuck up and stop moving around!"
The shirt covered her face, but she screamed and clawed
So Billy stomped on the bitch until he broken her jaw
The dirty bastards knew exactly what they were doing
They kicked her until they cracked her ribs and she stopped moving
Blood leaking through the cloth, she cried silently
And then they all proceeded to rape her violently
Billy was made to go first, but each of them took a turn
Ripping her up, and choking her until her throat burned
A broken jaw mumbled for God but they weren't concerned
When they were done and she was lying bloody, broken and bruised
One of them niggas pulled out a brand new twenty-two
They told him that she was a witness of what she'd gone through
And if he killed her he was guaranteed a spot in the crew
He thought about it for a minute, she was practically dead
And so he leaned over and put the gun right to her head

I'm falling and I can't turn back
I'm falling and I can't turn back

Right before he pulled the trigger and ended her life
He thought about the cocaine with the platinum and ice
And he felt strong standing along with his new brothers
Cocked the Gat to her head, and pulled back the shirt cover
But what he saw made him start to cringe and stutter
Cause he was staring into the eyes of his own mother

Dun dun duuunnnnn....

My favorite is Don Covay's "I Was Checkin' Out While She Was Checkin' In"

I just finished giving the hotel manager back the room key and paid my bill
I was outside in the car in the shadows of the parking lot
Telling the woman I was with how happy she made me
Kissing and hugging

An all of a sudden another car pulled up on the parking lot
But I couldn't believe my eyes
Cause the woman that was sitting in the front seat beside another dude
Turned out to be my old lady

I was checking out
And she was checking in
I was checking out
An my old lady was checking in

I was with my other woman
And she was with her boyfriend
She waited outside in the car
While he went in to rent the room

I wanted to say something to her
But there was nothing I could say
Cause the woman I was with
She was married too!

I was checking out
And she was checking in
I saw another man take my old lady
Into the Hideaway Motor Inn
I was with my other woman
And she was with her boyfriend

She was suppose to be at home minding the kids
The both of us had been untrue
Guess I'll have to go on being blind
I can't reveal her guilt without showing mine!

Some people claim that there's a woman to blame
But I don't-- it's my own damn fault.

And this (not by the Stones):

I have a sad story to tell you
It may hurt your feelings a bit
Last night when I stepped into my bathroom
I stepped in a big pile of

Shaving cream
Be nice and clean
Shave every day
And you'll always look keen

This, too, was a fine twist when I was a kid.

O. Henry may indeed leave a lot to be desired, as per Frederick Exley, but those are both great recordings.

Rare fidelity shocker:

Took a walk and passed your house late last night
All the shades were pulled and drawn way down tight
From within, the dim light cast two silhouettes on the shade
Oh what a lovely couple they made

Put his arms around your waist, held you tight
Kisses I could almost taste in the night
Wondered why I'm not the guy who's silhouette's on the shade
I couldn't hide the tears in my eyes

Lost control and rang your bell, I was sore
Let me in or else I'll beat down your door
When two strangers who have been two silhouettes on the shade
Said to my shock "you're on the wrong block"

Rushed down to your house with wings on my feet
Loved you like I'd never loved you my sweet
Vowed that you and I would be two silhouettes on the shade
All of our days, two silhouettes on the shade

fifteen years pass...

Talking Heads "Seen and Not Seen"

He would see faces in movies, on TV, in magazines, and in books
He thought that some of these faces might be right for him
And that through the years, by keeping an ideal facial structure fixed in his mind
Or somewhere in the back of his mind
That he might, through force of will, cause his face to approach those of his ideal
The change would be very subtle
It might take ten years or so
Gradually his face would change its shape
A more hooked nose; wider, thinner lips
Beadier eyes
A larger forehead

He imagined that this was an ability he shared with most other people
They had also molded their faces according to some ideal
Maybe they imagined that their new face
Would better suit their personality
Or maybe they imagined that their personality
Would be forced to change to fit the new appearance
This is why first impressions are often correct

Although some people might have made mistakes
They may have arrived at an appearance
That bears no relationship to them
They may have picked an ideal appearance
Based on some childish whim, or momentary impulse
Some may have gotten halfway there
And then changed their minds

He wonders if he too might have made a similar mistake
