HELLO DERE!

Quite a good documentary on the man on BBC2 last night, albeit no mention of "The Intro And The Outro." Easy on the ear, rocking chair dwelling, sweater sporting (and now octogenarian but scarily looking exactly the same) guitar picking and contrabass crooning Donegal cross between Jim Reeves and Perry Como who apparently fell out of favour with the BBC for singing old Irish music hall songs or maybe because he wasn't Shane MacGowan.

Or was he just Daniel O'Donnell's cheerier uncle?

Saw that. Great prog. I'd forgotten that he had such a nice voice.

Good God, I didn't know about this. Only yesterday I mentioned 'Hello Dere' in relation to "Intro and Outro" in a mail to a friend because my toddler has started going 'Hello Dere' instead of 'Hiya' as his standard greeting.

As for Val, just fuzzy memories of his TV shows - pretty much everything Marcello says. Warm and fuzzy.

What is it, mate?

He taught Malcolm Hardee how to play the harmonica!

Not sure if this is related, but at 7pm on BBC2 tonight, there's "Legends : Val Doonican Rocks". Same show, or related?

Mark G, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 11:17 (seventeen years ago)

"Delaney's Donkey" is a bit of a banger.

Have to give him credit where it's due - Val Doonican Rocks But Gently was the record which knocked Sgt Pepper off the top of the album chart.
