BABYEHBABYEHBABYEHYOUSURELIKETOFUCK

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 16:12 (seventeen years ago)

this is actually really hard.

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 16:12 (seventeen years ago)

WANNA DIG THAT DITCH

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 16:15 (seventeen years ago)

THE BLUES IS #1!

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 16:16 (seventeen years ago)

Russel Simins was a hell of drummer

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 16:16 (seventeen years ago)

This album >>> every other embarrassing minstrel show indie rock has churned out since.

Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 16:25 (seventeen years ago)

These guys never really caught on with me like Pussy Galore (or Royal Trux)did, but it's REALLY hard to argue with a line like "TAKE A WHIFF OF MY PANT-LEG BABY BABY", or that clip from that French talk show.

BigLurks, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 16:26 (seventeen years ago)

preferred Extra Width

J0hn D., Tuesday, 6 May 2008 16:29 (seventeen years ago)

extra width is dope too.

i hadn't listened to this for years, now in retrospect it's totally kicking my ass.

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 16:42 (seventeen years ago)

this is one of those albums I haven't owned or listened to in 5 years that I've had an inkling to buy and hear again pretty much the whole time.

Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 16:47 (seventeen years ago)

Incredibly hard, but the first time those strings come in on "Bellbottoms" just kills me (and another vote for "need to dig this out of the rack" post haste, by the way...)

Savannah Smiles, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 16:50 (seventeen years ago)

the stooges sax solo on the end of "ditch" is so dope

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 16:57 (seventeen years ago)

Everything up to and including this albums is great. If you can stomach Jon Spencer' shtick. Which I can, and willingly do, though not for some years now. I'm not sure if it's for nostalgic reasons but this may be my favorite album after the first one.

I second Russel Simins statement. Saw him do a drum solo once over the top of an ear-splitting theremin squeal, and almost entirely rode the snare. Such a beast on that little kit.

I also second Alex In Baltimore re the minstrel shit.

RabiesAngentleman, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 16:57 (seventeen years ago)

Fuck I'm going to listen to this right now.

RabiesAngentleman, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 16:57 (seventeen years ago)

AHHHH THOSE STRINGS

RabiesAngentleman, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 16:59 (seventeen years ago)

"Very Rare" is the best Booker T and the MGs song not by Booker T and the MGs

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 17:00 (seventeen years ago)

greyhound

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 17:00 (seventeen years ago)

'Now I Got Worry' is the definite one

baaderonixx, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 17:01 (seventeen years ago)

I had this, sold it, and have been in a quandry similar to AiB's whenever I think about this record (like now). Tho I think I have Now I Got Worry (bought used post-Orange sale) boxed up somewhere. I'm a dummy. (Baad might disagree, tho.)

David R., Tuesday, 6 May 2008 17:02 (seventeen years ago)

this poll is impossible!

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 17:31 (seventeen years ago)

The correct answer is Dissect.

bnw, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 17:32 (seventeen years ago)

This album could have been recorded a little more in the red. God I'm lovin it right now, though.

RabiesAngentleman, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 17:45 (seventeen years ago)

my memory of this is really really hazy, but, BRENDA

gff, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 17:49 (seventeen years ago)

saWEEEEEEEEEET BRENDA

gff, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 17:49 (seventeen years ago)

lol at backing vocals in full grown

RabiesAngentleman, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 17:55 (seventeen years ago)

Who is that other guy with Beck at the end of Flavor?

RabiesAngentleman, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 17:56 (seventeen years ago)

I went with Brenda.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 18:16 (seventeen years ago)

"Dang" beats "Brenda" for me by a nose because it made me want to learn to play harmonica. Also, great video that pretty much encapsultes 90s indie

Pretty sure the voice on "Flavor" that isn't Beck is Jon Spencer himself...

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 18:59 (seventeen years ago)

the "Dang" video was responsible for one of the greatest Beavis & Butthead segments of all time.

Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 19:05 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I always thought it was JS w/ Beck at the end of "Flavor". Went with "Very Rare", a total cop out 'cuz, groovy as it is, it feels like a throwaway. The meat of the album is in stuff like "Bellbottoms", "Dissect", "Full Grown", etc. "Greyhound" remixes are awful damn good too, but maybe that's another thread.

I'm with the folks who loved this album for a while, but then just kinda gave up on it. Not sure why, and I'm not sure why I gave up on John Spencer in general. Guess the schtick just got too thick. Not that he didn't keep on writing good tunes: I love "Rocketship" offa whatever it was a couple years later.

Along with the Jesus Lizard and the Flat Duo Jets, JSBX = one of the most consistently, reliably spectacular live acts of the early 90s. At least as much for Russel Simmins as for Spencer himself.

contenderizer, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 19:09 (seventeen years ago)

"Ditch"

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 19:09 (seventeen years ago)

In my head the other voice was always Mike D., but I think I've got a wire crossed with that remix album or whatever that was.

RabiesAngentleman, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 19:20 (seventeen years ago)

HOOS would have loved these guys.

wanko ergo sum, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 19:23 (seventeen years ago)

HOOS explosion! HOOS explosion!

James Redd and the Blecchs, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 19:28 (seventeen years ago)

LOL

wanko ergo sum, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 19:28 (seventeen years ago)

Went with 'Dang' 'cause it's got a lotta spirit. This was tough and I too am pulling it outta the vinyl racks today.

BlackIronPrison, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 20:01 (seventeen years ago)

blues x man!

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 20:44 (seventeen years ago)

"experimental remixes" >>>>>> "orange"

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 20:48 (seventeen years ago)

i'm with alex in nyc, ditch is the one that sticks in my mind, i guess maybe because "dig that ditch" is the rottenest, nastiest, smelliest, disgustingest, awesomest sex metaphor I can think of.

kenan, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 20:48 (seventeen years ago)

amazing live shows around the time of this album

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 21:04 (seventeen years ago)

contenderizer, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 21:38 (seventeen years ago)

Except for the "awesomest" part.

contenderizer, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 21:39 (seventeen years ago)

i bought this record from stephen pastel, because he had it on in the shop

i had no idea who stephen pastel was, and clucked encouragingly when he said he was in a band

later that night i put this record on and my 16-year-old friend who only listened to techno asked me if that was what people called "heavy metal"

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 21:40 (seventeen years ago)

"i need a full grown woman, down on her ass"
nobody brings it live like spencer did way back. i still remember him swinging from the fire extinguisher pipes in an undergrad iowa city meat market. when the frat boy bouncers get up on stage and threatened to end the show, spencer made his way hand over hand to dance on top of the bar. sister ray, jr, for sure

kamerad, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 23:03 (seventeen years ago)

i bought this on a whim, cause it had a silver j-card and a bright orange transparent cassette. wound up being the soundtrack of my life for 1994/5 and was the first thing my now-wife and i listened to. i love this fucking record. i could live without anything else by jsbx (except "big road"), but this is always going to be a favorite.

"full grown."

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 04:26 (seventeen years ago)

I followed JSBX around Florida on the Acme tour!

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 06:38 (seventeen years ago)

"Sweat" for me. Really love Experimental Remixes too, particularly the Killah Priest one.

Neil S, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 09:00 (seventeen years ago)

Is he still around and stuff? Does he still put out albums? Doesn't Russel Simmins drum in some band of children now or something?

Savannah Smiles, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 09:49 (seventeen years ago)

I think the last album was Damage. Unless it wasn't. After that I think he just did that side-band Heavy Trash? I haven't really followed, his albums seem to go downward after Orange. Live is a different story.
Damage had its moments, I thought. Not so keen on Plastic Fang.

What I've heard of that new In The Red thing (singles? rarities?) is pretty great.

RabiesAngentleman, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 10:01 (seventeen years ago)

^^^I mean his live shows. All the material he played from albums I didn't like, including some of my *least* favorite JSBX songs, absolutely killed live.

RabiesAngentleman, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 10:03 (seventeen years ago)

Seems to be a popular opinion that he went downhill after Orange, which to me is weird cos Now I Got Worry is my favourite JSBX album! Although yeah after that they got pretty eh. I don't think any of the albums after that are great although they're mostly okay. I thought the self-titled Heavy Trash album was pretty crap.

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 10:06 (seventeen years ago)

Oh and Dissect for this poll!

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 10:07 (seventeen years ago)

Doing a video with Winona Ryder = shark well and truly jumped.

Neil S, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 10:08 (seventeen years ago)

I think it was in all Matador records contracts in the 90s that a band had to feature Winona Ryder in a video.

earlnash, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 11:22 (seventeen years ago)

Or have at least one member with a "Winona" tattoo somewhere on their person.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 12:21 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

Ahhh I couldn't choose so I just went with the last option. Anyone else pulling this bullcrap?

RabiesAngentleman, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 23:43 (seventeen years ago)

nobody brings it live like spencer did way back.

JSBX live on telly at 9 on a Saturday morning in 1997, after playing a show the night before

energy flash gordon, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 05:47 (seventeen years ago)

LOL at stupid cameraman who doesn't know how a theremin works and won't get the fuck out of the way.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 08:08 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

wow i thought bellbottoms would win easy

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 23:06 (seventeen years ago)

I have a cassette somewhere of boombox demos for this record that a friend gave me. Think they shared the same rehearsal space. I need to find that tape.

Capitaine Jay Vee, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 23:42 (seventeen years ago)

Oh, yeah - I vote for BELLBOTTOMS!

Capitaine Jay Vee, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 23:42 (seventeen years ago)

Weird - my 2nd choice would be "Cowboy," for sure!

Savannah Smiles, Thursday, 15 May 2008 00:59 (seventeen years ago)

Capitaine Jay Vee I WANT HEAR!

I'm surprised Sweat and Dissect rated so low, but it seems a lotta folks just pulled the same cop-out move I did.

RabiesAngentleman, Thursday, 15 May 2008 01:23 (seventeen years ago)

I can't believe I missed this but probably would have voted "Ditch". Also can't believe how long it's been since i though about JSBX. I lent this to a boy I had an crush on in college and never saw it again. :-(

ENBB, Thursday, 15 May 2008 01:58 (seventeen years ago)

I was disappointed with every JSBX album I bought, but there were always two or three good-to-great songs that kept me trying another album. There's probably a killer compilation to be made from all the CDs (if I hadn't sold them.)

only one I remember from here is "Bellbottoms"

milo z, Thursday, 15 May 2008 02:05 (seventeen years ago)

Who could forget.

RabiesAngentleman, Thursday, 15 May 2008 02:11 (seventeen years ago)

Capitaine Jay Vee I WANT HEAR!

QUOTE DIS IF YOU WANT JAY VEE TO POST BOOMBOX DEMOS ALRIGHT

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Thursday, 15 May 2008 04:19 (seventeen years ago)

I gotta find that tape first.

Capitaine Jay Vee, Thursday, 15 May 2008 11:29 (seventeen years ago)

^^^*nudges*

RabiesAngentleman, Thursday, 15 May 2008 12:09 (seventeen years ago)

What is the line in "Dissect" that I always WANT to hear as "This love tastes a whole lot like chicken?" but I know is probably something else?

Lie Bot, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 03:57 (seventeen years ago)

two weeks pass...

Jon Spencer theremin demonstration

nate woolls, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 08:55 (seventeen years ago)

Orange is the last one I bought. I think I got a promo of Acme which was ok, but the first three are tough to beat. It seemed like the live show started suffering around the same time although I saw some great Boss Hog performances afterward.

Seeing Spencer's first solo tour (Crypt Style) opening for Jesus Lizard (Liar tour) was really great. So stripped down and I just barely recognized him from Pussy Galore album photos. A really fantastic, hungry rock band at that time.

Nate Carson, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 11:00 (seventeen years ago)

three years pass...

"Ditch" was robbed here, I feel

Patrice Leclerc Delacroix Poussin (admrl), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 00:01 (fourteen years ago)
