I only have one album, which seems to be a posthumous compilation - I think this is the only Chilean music I own, and while not as sonically adventurous as his Brazilian/Tropicalia counterparts it seems odd to me that even with a bio that roughly parallels Gil/Veloso (albeit with a way sadder/gruesome ending), you pretty much never hear about this guy.

i have the bio written by his wife but haven't got around to reading yet.
Robert Wyatt covered one of his songs

Te Recuerdo Amanda is great and has a chord progression I seem to have subconciously ripped off

Te Recuerdo Amanda
Lots of people have covered this one. I just downloaded a Joan Baez live in Chile performance, and the whole auduence sang along.
If you can find it, there's a brilliant recording of him live in Valparaiso which, I think, is better than any of his available studio performances. He has some really beautiful songs.

You'd also like Violeta Parra, who has a similar sad story and was an excellent songwriter and performer - and Robert Wyatt covered one of her songs to boot! - "Arauco Tiene Una Pena"

Hm:
A retired army colonel has been charged in the killing of renowned Chilean folk singer Victor Jara following the 1973 coup led by Gen. Augusto Pinochet.Judge Juan Fuentes said Thursday he ended his investigation into the case and charged only retired Col. Mario Manriquez in the case, saying he was "responsible" for the death....Fuentes had taken over the investigation in 2005 from another judge, who initially announced plans to charge Manriquez.A lawyer for the Jara family, Nelson Caucoto, said he will appeal the decision to close the probe with no other people charged.

“This decision has to be celebrated and we hope this investigation can continue,” Jara’s widow, Joan Jara, said at a press conference. “We know this marks a milestone.”
