I only have the clips at Ghostly's page to go on, so conceivably these songs could all go straight to hell right after the bits that fade out, but this is sounding like one of the highlights of the year to me. Ham was nice, if a bit scattershot; this is way better. Reminds me of a more frenzied version of the Brooks album on Accidental from a few years back- listen to "Fun and Interesting" (the first single), "Ethnic Instrument" or "Proper Rock," they're fucking great.
Plus the cover is the Balloon Dog with chocolate and sprinkles, which is worth a chuckle at least.

Ham was awesome.
― wilter, Thursday, 8 May 2008 00:40 (seventeen years ago)
I'll agree it was good, but it was one of those albums that I felt I ought to like more than I actually did.

― wmlynch, Thursday, 8 May 2008 01:22 (seventeen years ago)
terrific album - better than Ham, methink: more proggy and arty.
― nonightsweats, Thursday, 8 May 2008 08:14 (seventeen years ago)
"Fun And Interesting" is neither.
*thuper, thuper*

― wilter, Sunday, 13 July 2008 21:23 (seventeen years ago)
I really like the clangy noises in They Have a Name, but I haven't really given this a proper listen yet. Ham was overhyped imho.
― I know, right?, Sunday, 13 July 2008 21:25 (seventeen years ago)
Have you ever noticed how people who say imho, don't ever sound remotely humble but like overbearing asses?
imho
lol
I don't know, i don't really remember any hype imhfo.
― wilter, Sunday, 13 July 2008 21:27 (seventeen years ago)
I read a few things ranting about it, only one I remember properly was in the wire, where they were basically "better than roxy music" about it. Weirdly enthusiastic for the wire, where music listening usually sounds like such a chore.
― I know, right?, Sunday, 13 July 2008 21:29 (seventeen years ago)
I like this one WAY more I think
yeah it's great!
― wilter, Sunday, 13 July 2008 21:56 (seventeen years ago)

― Just got offed, Sunday, 13 July 2008 22:08 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, you'd like it, it's super british and has really strange dynamics.
― I know, right?, Sunday, 13 July 2008 22:25 (seventeen years ago)

One, thing though Proper Band by Free Kitten is a way better version of what they try to do on Proper Rock.
― I know, right?, Monday, 14 July 2008 12:08 (seventeen years ago)

Totally tits awesome. Best of their albums yet I think.

Agreed on the brilliance of this, was unfortunate to miss them live the other week. I need to get me a cheap copy of Ham.
― Mister Craig, Wednesday, 24 September 2008 15:30 (seventeen years ago)

Okay Louis I gave this a try and it's terrible, sorry. Undergraduate comedy meta-indie, just say no kids.

I'm not really sure what else I expected from an album called Mega Breakfast by a band called The Chap but nothing here is anywhere near as clever as it thinks it is. It seems to have been very cynically put together to appeal to a certain type of person and the humour is not funny.
I have nothing against humour in music but when you listen to, say, HMHB the humour can be insightful and affectionate, this is just sneery. I'm not sure "experimental rock" really needed its own Space.
― Maximo Park Ji-Sung (Matt DC), Sunday, 15 February 2009 18:09 (sixteen years ago)
Okay, Space is a bit harsh. Divine Comedy maybe.
― Maximo Park Ji-Sung (Matt DC), Sunday, 15 February 2009 18:11 (sixteen years ago)
...but the whole point is that they're cynical about pop music, they deconstruct, they satirise, they snipe...and all the while, their tunes BANG, it's as if the music itself defies the criticism rather than the other way round
I love 'em, anyhow.

the Joakim mix of Ethnic Instrument is pretty good but having watched a live video of that song on Youtube I can see how they would otherwise be shit
― EMPIRE STATE HYMEN (MPx4A), Sunday, 15 February 2009 18:48 (sixteen years ago)
that is nothing like their best song, it's one of the weakest on the album
try "Proper Rock" or "Fun And Interesting" or, hell, "Now Woel" from the previous record, which is I can shamelessly say one of my songs of the decade
― there's no antivote to (country matters), Sunday, 15 February 2009 18:50 (sixteen years ago)
Dude a chorus that goes "proper songs about girls and clubbing" does not deconstruct anything and isn't exactly piercing satire either. It's just smug. It's a shame because the noisy guitar bit would be really good tethered to a song that didn't make me want to punch the singer repeatedly in his face.
― Maximo Park Ji-Sung (Matt DC), Sunday, 15 February 2009 20:06 (sixteen years ago)
Musically they deconstruct. There's lots of stopping, starting, instruments suddenly playing on their own, and distinction between each instrumental part. The lyrics don't deconstruct so much as lark about in a clever-inane amusing not-too-serious self-deprecating manner.
