deeznuts, Thursday, 8 May 2008 02:29 (seventeen years ago)

I was gonna say

The Reverend, Thursday, 8 May 2008 02:36 (seventeen years ago)

You can see 'em do it live Friday night when they're appearing with the Dells, Blue Magic, Manhattans, and Intruders at the Showplace Arena in Maryland outside Washington DC. I've seen 'em around here twice in recent years. "Have You Seen Her" still sounded great--the current incarnation looked cool in white suits and matching fedoras.

curmudgeon, Thursday, 8 May 2008 02:56 (seventeen years ago)

its funny you say that cuz a couple months ago i was driving thru st louis & passed this tiny ancient dilapidated nightclub that was advertising the dells appearing, which made me do a timewarp double take -- i mean is it really a good thing that these guys are still performing, & at venues like that??

i hope its some kind of reunion thing but i have no idea; either way id kill to see that show but theres no chance in hell ill be able to

deeznuts, Thursday, 8 May 2008 03:20 (seventeen years ago)

Damn, curmudgeon. I wish I were back in Virginia for the weekend. I saw the Manhattans a couple of years ago here in Seattle -- GREAT.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Thursday, 8 May 2008 05:30 (seventeen years ago)

I was gonna say

And if you didn't, I was going to.

^^^^ really, really good ^^^^

abanana, Thursday, 8 May 2008 06:09 (seventeen years ago)

The Chi-Lites *were* Eugene Record (at least 75%) and he's no longer with us. So tread carefully, you're not seeing anything like *the* classic line-up.

And there's not a thing wrong with "Have You Seen Her," except that it's not "Oh Girl."

deedeedeextrovert, Thursday, 8 May 2008 07:52 (seventeen years ago)

The talky bit's a bit long. But it has that 'stingy' guitar in it.

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 8 May 2008 09:03 (seventeen years ago)

wow, i just listened to the 'a lonely man' album this morning, absolutely great. version of 'inner city blues' is pretty special, i love the way the verses are allowed lots of time to breathe, i find them slightly rushed in the original.

Frogman Henry, Thursday, 8 May 2008 10:17 (seventeen years ago)

If you play it backwards, it's a love song to L. Ron Hubbard.

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 8 May 2008 11:18 (seventeen years ago)

Mr L. Ron
tell me Mr. L. Ron

i think the very noticeable length is a big part of what makes the song so great, possibly even what makes the song for me period -- starting off like a pretty pop song then this incredibly long depressing spoken monologue immediately followed by that amazing chorus as the first sung lyrics

RIP Robert Lester of the Chi-lites. Mr. Record, who died in 2005, was the group's lead singer and songwriter, while Mr. Lester sang second tenor.

curmudgeon, Monday, 25 January 2010 17:40 (fifteen years ago)

Like Muddy Waters and numerous others, Lester was a Mississippi born guy who moved to Chicago. The amount of talent that was in Mississippi (and left because of Jim Crow and to get better jobs) is amazing.

Members occasionally came and went, but Mr. Lester was a staple of the Chi-Lites throughout his life, playing concerts all over the world with stops in Japan, Germany, Korea and Greenland, Thompson said. His final performance with the group was last summer.

curmudgeon, Monday, 25 January 2010 22:44 (fifteen years ago)

RIP. A friend of mine has pictures from their last concert, you should have seen the suits they were wearing, sharp red and white!

US EEL (u s steel), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 00:47 (fifteen years ago)

Excellent re the suits. I love that these various soul groups on the tour circuit are still wearing flashy '70s inspired wear.

Chi-Lites founding member and leader Marshall Thompson reportedly suffered a stroke while attending the SoulTrain cruise. Thankfully, he is now stable and in the hospital. We're sending out our prayers for a full and speedy recovery for our good friend Marshall.

Sadly, group member Frank Reed, who, along with Anthony Watson, took over lead vocal duties after the retirement of Eugene Record, has died. Reed was a talented singer who joined the group at a difficult time and served admirably through years on the road. He will be missed.

March 1 Update: Marshall has written the following note to his fans: I'm recovering well and coming home today! And I've been chillin out in St. Maarten after I left the Soul Train cruise. The staff has been great! There were so many The Chi-Lites fans at the hospital. As my dear friend Squirrel used to say, I jus luv ya! GOD is good all the time. Pictures coming soon from my stay here... — feeling blessed. Great news ...

I knew 'Have You Seen Her' was the saddest song of all time, didn't realise they had a catalogue filled with stone cold bummers. Christ on a bike, 'Toby'!
