keywords: charlton heston, end of whatever planet of the apes sequel it was, push the button

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 8 May 2008 15:17 (seventeen years ago)

So far as I can see...

Number of women in bands on that list: 0

Number of non-white people in bands on that list: 1 (drummer from the Libertines)

Nice work Q!

Neil S, Thursday, 8 May 2008 15:52 (seventeen years ago)

plus 1 from the Prodigy

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 8 May 2008 15:56 (seventeen years ago)

That's not very nice to Amy Winehouse, Neil. <insert zing here>

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 8 May 2008 16:01 (seventeen years ago)

Some on "Exile On Main Street" too

Tom D., Thursday, 8 May 2008 16:02 (seventeen years ago)

I'm presuming the Depeche Mode website had a good crack at rigging this poll, then?

Matt DC, Thursday, 8 May 2008 16:04 (seventeen years ago)

Oops, sorry, reading that list literally made me fall asleep and hence miscount!

Neil S, Thursday, 8 May 2008 16:17 (seventeen years ago)

Maybe Q Magazine gave prospective voters a choice of 50 albums to vote for.

Dingbod Kesterson, Friday, 9 May 2008 09:13 (seventeen years ago)

this worthless list was already polled 4 months ago alas:
HMV/Q "Best British Albums Ever " List. Do The UK Music Buying Public Suck?

blueski, Friday, 9 May 2008 09:42 (seventeen years ago)

sorry not polled, just moaned about

blueski, Friday, 9 May 2008 09:43 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

The list is not at all worthless, but the poll may be, considering it was already polled 4 months ago.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 11:24 (seventeen years ago)

I thought they just said it hadn't been polled.. Link?

Mark G, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 11:27 (seventeen years ago)

Not four months ago obv. but two months ago, yes.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 11:28 (seventeen years ago)

so, link?

(like I care!)

Mark G, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 11:33 (seventeen years ago)

Kind of amazed how little mainstream haircut indie of the last few years made the poll, one Arctic Monkeys record, one Libertines record and that's it. The Killers and the Kaiser Chiefs are surprisingly absent, Strokes and White Stripes even more surprisingly absent.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 11:37 (seventeen years ago)

Ditto Franz Ferdinand for that matter.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 11:38 (seventeen years ago)

You know, the album age has lasted since the 60s, and those acts you mention have only been around for a few years. It is natural for such a poll to reflect the entire history and not just the past few years.

After all, most of the best music was made in the 60s, 70s and 80s anyway.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 11:40 (seventeen years ago)

OK, explain Keane then.

Mark G, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 11:44 (seventeen years ago)

As much as I like Franz Ferdinand, Keane are better. They are more tasteful, more sophisticated, more melodic, and trying less to "rock".

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 11:46 (seventeen years ago)

Not to mention more fucking boring.

Thomas, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 11:48 (seventeen years ago)

lol at the accents on depeche mode

i vote white album, it's the most modern of all of them

braveclub, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 12:06 (seventeen years ago)

But isn't it less tasteful, less sophisticated, less melodic, and trying more to "rock" than Keane?

Tom D., Wednesday, 14 May 2008 12:08 (seventeen years ago)

LOLOLOLOL @ "tasteful" "sophisticated" and "not trying to rock" being used in relation to a poll with OASIS at numbers 1 and 2.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 12:11 (seventeen years ago)

The actual songs (speaking of the melodies, not the lyrics) of Oasis are actually rather sophisticated. The production is not though, apart from the "Morning Glory" and "Staying On The Shoulder Of Giants" albums, which are thus also their two best albums.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 12:18 (seventeen years ago)

and yet, "going no further than the shadows of giants" is notable by its absence.

Mark G, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 13:25 (seventeen years ago)

Kind of amazed how little mainstream haircut indie of the last few years made the poll, one Arctic Monkeys record, one Libertines record and that's it. The Killers and the Kaiser Chiefs are surprisingly absent, Strokes and White Stripes even more surprisingly absent.

British albums, innit?

sonofstan, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 15:29 (seventeen years ago)

must... not... argue... with... geir...

Thomas, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 15:30 (seventeen years ago)

Ah my mistake.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 15:44 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

and yet, "going no further than the shadows of giants" is notable by its absence.

It has wrongfully gotten the reputation of being their worst album. Probably because it consists of mostly ballads and midtempo stuff and very little "rock". Which is IMO exactly what makes it so great.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 23:43 (seventeen years ago)

I mean, "Who Feels Love" is easily their third best single, behind "Wonderwall" and "Don't Look Back In Anger", and yet it was one of their biggest ever flops. Some people don't understand subtle and sophisticated pop quality.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 23:44 (seventeen years ago)

That one was decried for being too 'experimental', but the fuckin in the bushes, the most experimental, were taken as it's highlights.

Side 2 gets very generic oasis to the extreme. That is what lets it down. "Little James" was an indulgence they didn;t get away with as nothing after it was any good either.

"Heathen Chem" is worse, though. Liams songs were the highlights there.

Mark G, Thursday, 15 May 2008 06:58 (seventeen years ago)

"Who Feels Love" is actually kind of experimental. Or, no, it isn't. But for an Oasis song it is. :)

I agree "Heathen Chemistry" was their worst.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 15 May 2008 08:11 (seventeen years ago)

I keep seeing this and thinking it's a Q and Not U thread.
