Is there any love for this apparently nondescript group?

calstars, Friday, 9 May 2008 22:06 (seventeen years ago)

nah

tylerw, Friday, 9 May 2008 22:08 (seventeen years ago)

I listened to their first CD when I was 13-14 on a car drive to Busch Gardens. Dumb enough then to make serious consideration of it.

bamcquern, Friday, 9 May 2008 23:08 (seventeen years ago)

Only in The Cable Guy.

Eazy, Friday, 9 May 2008 23:08 (seventeen years ago)

I like when "Take A Picture" comes on the radio

Curt1s Stephens, Friday, 9 May 2008 23:08 (seventeen years ago)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8uW6oeNnSw really great song actually

never heard anything else by this band

Curt1s Stephens, Friday, 9 May 2008 23:11 (seventeen years ago)

Your honesty deserves kudos.

bamcquern, Friday, 9 May 2008 23:11 (seventeen years ago)

still dunno why I can like thus but not ILM's beloved Sugar Ray

Curt1s Stephens, Friday, 9 May 2008 23:14 (seventeen years ago)

i knew their manager. he didn't tell me a single memorable story

jergïns, Friday, 9 May 2008 23:15 (seventeen years ago)

ILM loves Sugar Ray? Have you heard that band Peace? Crutis, you would love them.

bamcquern, Friday, 9 May 2008 23:17 (seventeen years ago)

I have not heard Peace at all

Curt1s Stephens, Friday, 9 May 2008 23:18 (seventeen years ago)

They're so pitch-perfect in their parody of the Sugar Rays/Smashmouths that you can't tell them apart. It's really catchy and giggle-worthy.

I dunno, really not at all like this Filter song, which has its own (totally unfashionable) strengths, so I don't have any business saying you'd like it.

five months pass...

There are days where I have to admit that "Hey Man Nice Shot" and "Jurassitol" have some sort of special place in my heart, but that doesn't keep me from recognizing them as stupid, self-important adolescent drivel. That's how they got into my heart in the first place, when I was 16!

aren't these guys from cleveland? nothing good ever came from cleveland.

Men's Scarehouse - "You're gonna like the way you're shook." (m bison), Tuesday, 14 November 2017 04:08 (seven years ago)

also, just went down the wiki rabbit hole and discovered this dude's brother was the fucking T-1000 so that's something to take up space in my brain until my memory starts to go in my old age

Men's Scarehouse - "You're gonna like the way you're shook." (m bison), Tuesday, 14 November 2017 04:12 (seven years ago)

it didn't even need to age well, that song was always excellent imo

dyl, Tuesday, 14 November 2017 04:15 (seven years ago)

It's weird that this guy is supposedly the Piggy from the Nine Inch Nails song.

how's life, Tuesday, 14 November 2017 10:53 (seven years ago)

I like how there's still a trace of NIN in this song, in the distorted guitar and "HEEEEY DAD". Industrial breaking through on soft-rock radio.

jmm, Tuesday, 14 November 2017 15:15 (seven years ago)

i've been saying for a while now that the chorus of 'take a picture' has a my bloody valentine inspired sound

scoff walker (diamonddave85), Tuesday, 14 November 2017 16:33 (seven years ago)

I definitely listened to _Title of Record_ a lot when I was 15/16 and then never again

this is otm i think. i found the structure of this song deeply confusing when i was a kid though

great karaoke jam if you can find a version without the "hey dad" part excised

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Tuesday, 14 November 2017 16:35 (seven years ago)

I still can't believe "Take A Picture" was a top 40 hit.

the Hannah Montana of the Korean War (DJP), Tuesday, 14 November 2017 16:40 (seven years ago)

(Not because it's bad; it rules! Because it's Filter and I never expected them to crack the top 40.)

the Hannah Montana of the Korean War (DJP), Tuesday, 14 November 2017 16:42 (seven years ago)

I'm listening to the album for the first time in at least 15 years and hoo boy these songs really stretch out huh

lmao

ur-oik (rip van wanko), Tuesday, 14 November 2017 16:45 (seven years ago)

they released five more albums including one last year, I almost respect the cling

Simon H., Tuesday, 14 November 2017 16:46 (seven years ago)

An unintentional song about alcoholism.

There was a period of my life where I wrote from purely an experience point of view. “Take a Picture” [from 1999's Title of Record] was written from the insanity of being an alcoholic. I tried to make sense of it, but I refused to write with any kind of meaning behind it, and I wrote purely stream-of-conscious. And looking back on those lyrics, it was genius because it was not contrived – I didn’t know that the message was that this song was about alcoholism.

jmm, Tuesday, 14 November 2017 17:00 (seven years ago)

Goddamn it, ever since it was revived on the CVS thread I've kept going back to that video, thinking about how much I would love to inhabit that stupid overblown late 90s world again. After enough of that, the dumb song went and got stuck in my head.

So I've added it to my "Mediocre Modern Rock" playlist. Anything else from Filter that would fit the bill? I had only known them from Hey Man Nice Shot, which is an entirely different aesthetic.

how's life, Wednesday, 15 November 2017 18:42 (seven years ago)

"(Can't You) Trip Like I Do" probably is also not the right aesthetic but that's the first song that came to mind

the Hannah Montana of the Korean War (DJP), Wednesday, 15 November 2017 19:07 (seven years ago)

start with the lesser Tonic singles and go from there

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 15 November 2017 19:14 (seven years ago)

but filter-wise you might be SOL, I'm pretty sure this was a complete fluke versus HMNS/Jurassitol/etc
