You're probably not the only one, but I'm pretty sure yours is the overwhelmingly minority view (e.g., held by, maybe, 100 other people).

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 10 May 2008 01:45 (seventeen years ago)

well 100 isn't bad.

Surmounter, Saturday, 10 May 2008 02:06 (seventeen years ago)

but ur right, i can't be the only one. which is an odd thought cuz it kinda feels like i am...

Surmounter, Saturday, 10 May 2008 02:09 (seventeen years ago)

i'm in a similar situation with FutureSex/LoveSounds, but probably wouldn't go so far as to say 'of all-time.' Of the millenium, though!

Tape Store, Saturday, 10 May 2008 03:58 (seventeen years ago)

you know that's the other one on my desk...

Surmounter, Saturday, 10 May 2008 05:01 (seventeen years ago)

It might be top 100. And when you're that high up, rankings don't mean so much.

I think Kylie Minogue's Fever is still the best pop album of the decade.

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 10 May 2008 05:25 (seventeen years ago)

there's this phoenician band called 'the sexi mothers' who put out a better album in 704 BC.

Frogman Henry, Saturday, 10 May 2008 06:00 (seventeen years ago)

dude, that's a jazz album, not pop.

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 10 May 2008 21:43 (seventeen years ago)

thanks for the vote of understanding matt. i can always depend on you.

Surmounter, Saturday, 10 May 2008 22:21 (seventeen years ago)

You have to be kidding.

brightscreamer, Sunday, 11 May 2008 03:41 (seventeen years ago)

that's the thing. i'm not.

Surmounter, Sunday, 11 May 2008 03:53 (seventeen years ago)

Please explain.

brightscreamer, Sunday, 11 May 2008 04:00 (seventeen years ago)

ramzi i'm pretty sure you are the only one who thinks this

J0rdan S., Sunday, 11 May 2008 04:01 (seventeen years ago)

J0rdan S., Sunday, 11 May 2008 04:01 (seventeen years ago)

my birthday party next week is going to be a mariah-themed slumber party. we're gonna do biore strips, flip through Seventeen and eat junk food. WISEGIRLS (feat. Mariah) will be playing at 9:30pm, and later GLITTER for the sleepover crew.

Surmounter, Sunday, 11 May 2008 04:11 (seventeen years ago)

Oh. So this is a joke. Yawn.

brightscreamer, Sunday, 11 May 2008 04:21 (seventeen years ago)

no, haha

Surmounter, Sunday, 11 May 2008 04:22 (seventeen years ago)

haha, I was just going to say one should always celebrate one's birthday free from irony

Eric H., Sunday, 11 May 2008 04:22 (seventeen years ago)

or by doing what one does every other day of the year

Eric H., Sunday, 11 May 2008 04:23 (seventeen years ago)

If Rolling Teenpop thread didn't exist, ILX would have to invent it.

Mordy, Sunday, 11 May 2008 04:23 (seventeen years ago)

Wait, i'm confused... Are we voting yes or no we agree that you ARE the only person who holds this opinion? Or are we voting yes or no we agree or disagree with your opinion?

Christyles, Sunday, 11 May 2008 16:22 (seventeen years ago)

Not a bad question.

t**t, Sunday, 11 May 2008 16:46 (seventeen years ago)

Ramzi, your new mission is to seek out each of these 100 or so people and eliminate them so you can maintain your unique position in the world.

The Reverend, Sunday, 11 May 2008 23:14 (seventeen years ago)

=) you're voting on whether or not you think i'm the only one. but if you do agree or know someone who does i'd love to know about it

Surmounter, Sunday, 11 May 2008 23:17 (seventeen years ago)

Surmounter, Monday, 12 May 2008 23:07 (seventeen years ago)

I admit I haven't listened to "The Emancipation..." but you've made me really curious. If this isn't a joke, could you explain WHY do you think it is the best album ever? BTW my favorite pop album of the decade is Rachel Stevens' "Come and Get It".

daavid, Monday, 12 May 2008 23:30 (seventeen years ago)

okay.

the songwriting is just awesome. hooks ALL OVER the place. the production is clean and tasteful. and mariah's voice is the main draw. slinky, sexy and dead-on pitch, she jumps all over the beats like no one else could. at the same time that she manages to sound crystal clear, she lays on the vocal layers as well. it's hard to believe how many good songs there are on this album, they just keep coming.

Surmounter, Monday, 12 May 2008 23:44 (seventeen years ago)

To answer the initial question in this thread: possibly yes, but not because it isn't a phenomenal record. My own personal choice would be (to the surprise of absolutely no one who knows me) would be Kylie's X, loaded as it is with plenty of infectious hooks and the sort of production that Alison Goldfrapp might envy. I am also a big fan of the Rachel Stevens album daavid mentioned, and I have a soft spot for the most recent Britney album after hearing it in its entirely at a club recently. I thought about nominating a Saint Etienne album, but their work over the past few years hasn't been "pop", at least in my mind. Not in the sense that we're talking about here. Doubtlessly the Mariah record is a reasonably pick, though I couldn't completely agree considering I prefer several other albums of hers above this particular one. Might I also humbly submit the Robyn album, which has just managed to reach the American shores?

omar little, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 00:20 (seventeen years ago)

which other Mariah records?

Surmounter, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 02:12 (seventeen years ago)

I still don't understand if voting "Yes" meant "yes, it is the best pop album of all time" or "yes, you are the only one who thinks it is the best pop album of all time".

Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 02:16 (seventeen years ago)

well i wanted it to be the former but then i worded it stupidly :/

Surmounter, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 02:18 (seventeen years ago)

i'm pretty sure we were all voting on the latter, or at least i did

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 14 May 2008 02:20 (seventeen years ago)

only two emoticons from surmounter in this thread-- v disappointing

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 14 May 2008 02:21 (seventeen years ago)

re: tape store and p12

fs/ls is a really fantastic album, and def in the running for best pop album of the millennium, tho i think best of all time is probably pushing it

also i think it's interesting that no one's brought up any rap albums in the discussion of "best pop album". kanye strives just as hard to make pop music as do justin/timbo, hell one could even make an argument for tip's king. mostly i just think it's odd that ppl either forget rap albums (or rock for that matter-- fall out boy?) wrt "best pop" or have such a narrow idea of what a pop album is, esp. in this day and age

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 14 May 2008 02:27 (seventeen years ago)

you know, i even felt a little weird calling this a pop album cuz it's kind of an rnb album. i don't know, it does depend on how narrowly you look at it. but it seems like the going definition is something of the britney spears variety.

one year passes...

As much as i love this album, i cannot agree with the sentiment that it's the best pop album of all time. The nelly collabo disqualifies it for me. And wtf is up with i wish you knew?

Christyles, Friday, 3 July 2009 15:12 (sixteen years ago)

Guys, it's Mariah Fucking Carey.

Naive Teen Idol, Saturday, 4 July 2009 20:30 (sixteen years ago)

eleven months pass...

umm. i just realized that in bonus track "so lonely" mariah blatantly references the lisa lisa track "i wonder if i take u home"

love it

also "i wish you knew" fucking ROCKS hard (like one of my fav trax on the album), but i can get behind the nelly collabo sucking
