Hurricane: I like the Live Rust version better, and I couldn't not vote for Heart Of Gold ultimately.

Came down to Hurricane vs Winterlong, went for the otherwise unreleased

Which is my way of saying that I prefer Decade on vinyl, as it is more manageable on three discs and six sides.

There may be lots of great songs on "Harvest" and just one on "American Stars'n'Bars". But that one is one of his best ever songs, so I voted "Like a Hurricane"

i have gone with tonight's the night. Decade was the most beloved item of mine in my parents record collection.

Tempted to go for 'Winterlong' - it being the main reason I bought this in the first place - but opted for 'Like A Hurricane' after hearing it playing on vinyl at ear-splitting volume in a Relics Records the other week.

Well, at least Soto (typically) knew what I was talking about.

It's possible because the version on Decade was recorded in late 1973/1973.

it’s interesting that “don’t cry no tears” was one of the first songs he wrote back in 1964. I guess a live version was originally going to appear on Decade?

I imagine the Whitten era Crazy Horse tried recording "Winterlong" at some point (maybe in summer of 69), but maybe it never quit got there. They certainly nail it on the Fillmore East disc.

I'm glad "Soldier" has a second life on this record, rather than languishing unheard on the Journey Through the Past soundtrack.
On the other hand, "Ambulance Blues" may be my favourite Neil Young song, but it wouldn't fit on Decade, it needs to stay at the end of side 2 of On the Beach.

Apparently 'Winterlong' was recorded at Larrabee Studios in Hollywood on 10/17/69. I imagine it was intended for the second Crazy Horse album that was swallowed up by After the Gold Rush.

aha, yeah that makes sense. maybe that recording will be on Early Daze, which Neil has been talking about forever ... might have the crazy horse version of "helpless," and early take of whitten's "look at all the things," maybe some additional recordings from the 1970 tour.

I believed Neil when he said that 'Helpless' didn't get recorded in Shakey, until he somehow 'found' another CH take of 'Birds' with the second verse, haha. I really hope Early Daze actually comes out at some point, in some format, etc.

that first crazy horse album rules I would love to hear if there were any outtakes from that (though I guess that wouldn't really be Neil's to release)
