144. How can you get 180 points from 30 questions, are some of these answers supposed to be more wrong than others?
― Tuomas, Sunday, 11 May 2008 18:33 (seventeen years ago)
i'm not sure. i wondered if there was some kind of weighting -- ie the mouse on mars question is worth fuck all -- but perhaps you're right and it's 6 points for the correct answer and 0 points for the one they think makes you a total dick.
not sure. don't care. gah, i'm gonna get fucking humped here.

i got 129 as well
― Michael B, Sunday, 11 May 2008 19:46 (seventeen years ago)
Right answers are given 3, 6, or 9 points. Wrong answers are worth 0. The MoM one is a 3 pointer.

Mix-Tape Master (109-144 points) You are a music evangelist: the person in your network of friends who always has the coolest new song, the one whose iPod gets picked to DJ every party. You understand the art of the segue, how the key to the best mix-tape isn't just the songs you pick, but how they interlock with each other. You also know who the up-and-coming acts are and are quick to recognise where their influences lie and whether they will make it big. You work hard at the pursuit of this knowledge, scouring music blogs, magazines and record stores. Most importantly, you are generous with your passion – and your friends should be very, very grateful. Still, it’s always good to get new inspiration for your latest mix.
― musically, Sunday, 11 May 2008 20:41 (seventeen years ago)
yeh, that "mix-tape master" thing struck me as deeply balls. er, knowing the names of dudes from ZZ top equates with being "generous with (my) passion"? riiight.

― wesley useche, Monday, 12 May 2008 03:47 (seventeen years ago)
This makes absolutely no sense, since for the most of these questions there is only one correct answer. How can you, for example, rate the wrong colour schemes on the White Stripes question based on how wrong they are?
― Tuomas, Monday, 12 May 2008 07:54 (seventeen years ago)
tuomas im pretty sure it means that the questions are weighted depending on difficulty but there is still only one right answer, not that you can get a certain amount of points my missing a question more rightly or something
― J0rdan S., Monday, 12 May 2008 07:56 (seventeen years ago)

Also, I think the post-punk question is plain wrong, since dub evolved simultaneously alongside reggae, so it can't really be called "post-reggae".
(x-post)
Okay, thanks for the explanation.

99 and i guessed quite a few. incidentally i don't know what emusic is should i care to find out?
― fantasimundo, Monday, 12 May 2008 15:32 (seventeen years ago)
emusic sells horrible low quality mp3s for a very cheap subscription price. if you want a lot of music, in very poor quality, then emusic may be for you. generally, emusic is complete garbage. avoid at all costs, even when that cost is low.
― brotherlovesdub, Monday, 12 May 2008 15:37 (seventeen years ago)
Um, that's not entirely true. While they're not exactly pimping lossless file types, they do encode MP3s at an average of 192kbps VBR, with no DRM, which is a damn site better than iTunes' 128kbps AAC files with DRM.
See here;http://www.emusic.com/help/technical.html
Q: What is a bitrate? At what bitrate are eMusic's MP3s encoded at? A: Bitrate is the number of bits per second used in the encoding process. A higher bitrate (a.k.a encoding rate) usually means a larger size file and higher quality sound. eMusic currently encodes its MP3s using VBR (Variable Bit Rate). VBR is a type of audio compression that different sections of a track at different bit rates. Intricate portions are encoded at higher rates while simpler portions are encoded at lower rates. This is different than standard bit rate encoding, which encodes all sounds at a fixed rate. The average bit rate used for VBR on eMusic is 192k. We choose to encode using VBR to give you the best possible sound quality with the smallest possible file size.
Back to top Q: What type of encoder does eMusic use to encode it's VBR MP3s? A: To encode the files on eMusic, we used LAME version 3.92. The import option that was used is -alt-preset standard.

126. I think I missed the Beatles question, and probably the Lady Day one (though I guessed Holiday, same as I did in the bar quiz last weekend).
― I eat cannibals, Monday, 12 May 2008 17:52 (seventeen years ago)
Actually, in looking at the answers, all of the things I missed (aside from the Bad Brains one) are things that I don't really give a fuck about. Yellow refers to Yellow Pages? Well, ya got me there. Ryan Adams' real first name? I dunno, Ryan isn't his real name? I know he was in Whiskeytown and is prolific and some people like him, I guess.
More questions about Boredoms line-ups and Steve Albini production!

my biggest problem isn't the encoding quality of their MP3s -- which is perfectly reasonable -- but their fucking atrocious customer service. seriously: i have never dealt with any company as piss-poor at dealing with their customers and for that reason i couldn't recommend them at all.

Ryan Adams — Birth Name: David Ryan Adams
Oh. OK, I'll let him off: I know a fair few people who are called by their second (i.e. middle) name...
― Mark G, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 14:26 (seventeen years ago)
I feel like I'm getting pretty good value from eMusic. Right now I'm paying $25/month for 75 downloads, and this usually works out to be cheaper than buying new or used CDs or downloading from iTunes or Amazon. The sound quality seems fine on my equipment.
This is my second time around -- a few years ago I tried eMusic and canceled my subscription because I didn't think the selection was very good. They seem to have added a lot since then.
The most annoying aspect is having to remember to use up monthly downloads before they expire.
― Brad C., Tuesday, 13 May 2008 14:40 (seventeen years ago)
"Miles Davis played primarily what instrument" and "which of these vaguely jamaican concepts is closest to being a genre" and "beethoven wrote how many symphonies" are really not in the same league as knowing bjork song titles
