Their myspace says Taiwan. I thought I just read something else that said they were somewhere in mainland China.

The Wire had a pretty interesting article on the Beijing "scene" a while back. I couldn't find any of the music mentioned ANYWHERE

lol at me responding to a 2 year old post (couldn't see that on zing). I remember most Chinese underground music to be bad fifth-generation photocopies of punk but I'd be happy to be proven wrong. (haven't watched rudipherous's youtubes yet)

Well they are nothing spectacular, but the first one was odd enough to hold my attention and the song in the second one is pleasantly upbeat and then pleasantly downtempo and pleasantly upbeat again.

I guess the correct term is Mandopop, to include pop in Mandarin not necessarily made in China. In fact, according to Wikipedia or whatever I just googled up, Taiwan is the biggest source of Madopop. There ought to be a Mandopop thread, but there would need to be a Madopop expert. I'm not volunteering. I'm actually ready to ditch everything and buy a bunch of old salsa reissues, really.

hah, I'd be interested in starting a mandopop exploration thread once I get my life settled down in the next few weeks. I tried doing a cantopop exploration thread but I ran out of steam. there's some really good posts in the k-pop thread at the moment.

So dyao, which is bigger (in terms of listeners, I guess) Cantopop or Mandopop? I need to check back into the Kpop thread, but I don't think any of it that I've heard has ever done much for me. Anyway, do it and I will try to half-heartedly check in. I get most of my Asian pop leads from the Shiina Ringo/Tokyo Jihen forum I visit, to be honest.

admrl, that's nice to know. I haven't made a current mix for a while because the material to choose from has been so disappointing, especially for salsa. Not to take this two year old thread which only had two posts until today off topic or anything.

Mandopop! Cantopop is on the decline and has been for some while now. most HK people I know prefer to listen to pop from Taiwan or Korea.

I saw gum bleed, a beijing punk band, a few weeks ago. they were pretty good although the vocalist was on some hatebreed growling shit. but it was a fun time.

Taiwanese music is okay for this thread, yeah? I discovered 大嘴巴 (Da Mouth) and have been listening to 流感 pretty much nonstop all week. Admitting this will probably encourage abuse but whatever, it's ace.

btw I am utterly utterly open to all similar Taiwanese/Chinese electro/hip hop; also Cantopop/K-pop/J-pop to a lesser extent, but Mandopop doubles as a study guide for me so
