or same dude, i guess

J0rdan S., Monday, 12 May 2008 07:41 (seventeen years ago)

talked about it in the studio and balearic revival threads

gr8080, Monday, 12 May 2008 07:46 (seventeen years ago)

i mean, we talked about future rock there

gr8080, Monday, 12 May 2008 07:46 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i know that's how i heard about future rock but since i haven't seen either of those threads revived recently i figured that we just missed this one-- things im reading say more ambient/droney than future rock but im interested anyway

'future rock' was great but his new one sounds like a straight-up ambient record. the reviews i've seen so far have been mixed.

only just getting into 'future rock', v good

blueski, Monday, 12 May 2008 11:09 (seventeen years ago)

yeah much more ambient-leaning... i got this in the same package as Ambient Not Not Ambient comp on the same label. i haven't spent as much time with this as with Future Rock, but if you liked that it seems like it's probably still worth checking out.

seems like lamping is like future rock with the beats and song parts ripped out of 'em. interesting concept, think it holds up well but seems like people are ready for another future rock.

What's sort of amazed me is how quietly this disc slipped into the marketplace. Not that Strategy's prior disc was a huge success commercially, but it generated high-profile buzz (the lead review in Stylus one day, somewhat frequent mentions and a prominent review in Pitchfork, positive mentions in lots of other publications). By contrast, this disc seems to have received almost no mention anywhere and, when it is mentioned, it seems to be given little attention (e.g., Popmatters just put its review of the new disc in it's "Short Takes" section, for discs that don't merit the full review treatment). I wonder what happened.

it's on Audio Dregs rather than Kranky... presumably a different publicity budget, different level of recognition by editors, etc.

marc h., Monday, 12 May 2008 16:00 (seventeen years ago)

and i think that vitece is right-- people were ready for another future rock, and dickow is a pretty prolific guy, so maybe this simply fell off people's radars.

I've only heard the extremely dubby Shockout single this guy did. Is any of his other stuff like that?

Alex in SF, Monday, 12 May 2008 16:13 (seventeen years ago)

all strategy stuff seems dubby to me, but the 7" and the gregory isaacs remix also on shockout are the only things that seem obviously reggae themed to me. he should do mroe of that for sure

I forgot about his "Gone A Jail" remix. I need to relisten to that (I mostly remember the very fine DJ C remix on that 12" because it was getting used in mixes for ages before the single ever came out.)

I just finished listening to Lamping. Pretty much pure ambient; not necessarily distinguished, but not bad at all. I loved Future Rock. I like this.

DLee, Monday, 12 May 2008 16:57 (seventeen years ago)

I agree with DLee. Totally good, but not as strikingly original. Liner notes say some of the stuff goes back to 2002. Wonder if I'd feel differently if I'd heard this album that year- IIRC tha's the year Tim Hecker's "Haunt Me" cd blew me away and some similar stuff
