Hippie soul / soulful hippie music

I'm gonna DJ at a "Woodstock" themed student party, and besides the obvious hippie music I want to play a lot of 60s and early 70s soul. I was wondering if you could recommend me some soul music with a psychedelic edge or psychedelic rock with a soul edge. I do have the obvious stuff like The Temptations, Sly & The Family Stone, and The Undisputed Truth, but I'd love to get some more recommendations. Individual songs rather than whole albums, if you can name some. Thanks!

Andy Bey - "Celestial Blues", anything off Experience and Judgement really.

Noodle Vague, Monday, 12 May 2008 18:42 (seventeen years ago)

I've been meaning to buy that Andy bey album for a long time, maybe this would be a good excuse to get it.

Tuomas, Monday, 12 May 2008 18:43 (seventeen years ago)

Off Maggot Brain the most "hippie soulful" song is prob Can You Get to That.

Bill Magill, Monday, 12 May 2008 18:46 (seventeen years ago)

I meant some pre-Maggot Brain song of theirs...

Tuomas, Monday, 12 May 2008 18:48 (seventeen years ago)

I've got a few home made comps with similar. I'll dig them out and make a list.

The Futures, "Castles In The Sky" LP. Maybe a little too Philly soul, but a good reach if you do it right.

How about some Norman Whitfield-era Temptations? Like "Cloud Nine", "I Can't Get Next To You" or similar?

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 08:31 (seventeen years ago)

I mentioned in my initial post that I already have that stuff, but thanks anyway.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 08:46 (seventeen years ago)

Vahid's mixtape looks pretty good, that's the sort of stuf I'd play too. "Attica Blues" is such a great tune.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 08:50 (seventeen years ago)

At the risk of stating the obvious:
"Going Back To My Roots" - Richie Havens.
(Havens played at Woodstock, so bonus points for that.)

The other bleedin obvious (but I'll say it anyway) choice:
"Why Can't We Live Together" - Timmy Thomas.

Funkadelic's "Can You Get To That" is pretty hippy-ish.

Terry Callier, of course.

"Stoned Soul Picnic" - 5th Dimension
"When The Revolution Comes" - Last Poets
"The Ghetto" - Donny Hathaway
"Hercules" - Aaron Neville
"The Revolution Will Not Be Televised"/"The Bottle" - Gil Scott-Heron
"Right On Brother" - Sinto
"Supernatural Thing" - Ben E. King
"Compared To What" - Les McCann & Eddie Harris
"Make Music" - Rena Sinakin
"Who Is He And What Is He To You" / "You" - Bill Withers
"Work To Do" / "Love The One You're With" - Isley Brothers
"Golden Lady" - Jose Feliciano

"Compared To What" - Les McCann & Eddie Harris

Is this the same tune that was also covered by Roberta Flack on her debut LP? Because I love that song, I'm definitely gonna play it at the party.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 12:59 (seventeen years ago)

As far as I know. Written by Gene McDaniels

James Redd and the Blecchs, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 13:02 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, Wikipedia confirms it. Gotta check out that Les McCann version.

I think you need more War... try Cisco Kid and Spill the Wine with Eric Burdon singing lead.

Marvin Gaye ffs

Curt1s Stephens, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 05:12 (seventeen years ago)

back to that psychedelic rock with the soul edge thing... now you might do well with some Joe Cocker. Try his brilliant take on The Letter to get things going or his version of With a Little Help From My Friends for the end of the night.
