Surely everyone has at least one copy of all these tracks by now or you've clearly been investing in the wrong compilations

rez

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 15:27 (seventeen years ago)

I have a JBO compilation cd somewhere as it was the only place to get Rez until a 12" of Cowgirl/Rez came out.

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 15:29 (seventeen years ago)

i voted for Thrill Me remix even though the mix included is the worst of the 3 Underworld mixes on the 2x12". The ambient instrumental is 12mins of bliss. Perfect compliment to the Sabres slow mix of The Mighty Ming.

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 15:48 (seventeen years ago)

It was actually down to Mr. Fingers vs. Peckings with me. Peckings won.

As much as I want the Weatherall take on "Soon" to be the bomb that doesn't make it the bomb. Many good ideas, badly arranged.

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 15:52 (seventeen years ago)

"Salome (Zooromancer Remix)" is the finest record ever with Bono's voice on it.

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 15:53 (seventeen years ago)

what a crazy comp

Bocca Juniors for me

blueski, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 16:33 (seventeen years ago)

Soon original = bomb
Soon remix = BUTTERFLY WITH A BOMB

blueski, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 16:34 (seventeen years ago)

I thought I'd be the only Bocca Juniors voter. Glad I'm not.

Raw Patrick, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 17:02 (seventeen years ago)

Big Mouth is my favorite Underworld song of all time, so that. Who is Philadelphia Slim and how does he play such a cool harmonica solo?

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 23:05 (seventeen years ago)

bocca jnrs for me 3

braveclub, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 23:20 (seventeen years ago)

yeah raise is good but where the hell are the FIRE ISLAND tracks?

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 15 May 2008 00:05 (seventeen years ago)

presumably on some other compilation

El Tomboto, Thursday, 15 May 2008 00:19 (seventeen years ago)

I also wanted the Saint Etienne remix to be better - are there any St Etienne remixes that live up to their potential?

Was tempted to vote for One Dove, but went for Mr. Fingers. Who the hell were Lemon Interrupt?

etc, Thursday, 15 May 2008 00:43 (seventeen years ago)

Lemon Interrupt = Underworld, in between being Freur and being Underworld, I thought

El Tomboto, Thursday, 15 May 2008 00:44 (seventeen years ago)

No, in between being Underworld and Underworld - ie after the first two albums, the first stuff with Darren Emerson in the group.

energy flash gordon, Thursday, 15 May 2008 00:48 (seventeen years ago)

what a crazy comp label

Indie-friendly blokish (if great) stuff like Underworld and the Dust (Chemical) Bros, then gay house and garage like Fire Island and Roach Motel. With X-Press 2/Ballistic Bros/Black Science Orchestra doing their thing, then out and out techno like Centuras. It never made any sense to me.

I had this comp http://www.discogs.com/release/34756 "> http://www.discogs.com/release/34756

I've never heard the Fire Island mix, but I used to love Get Your Hands Off of My Man, but I vote Rez, or My Mercury Mouth, or the Saint Etienne mix. Hmmm.

Jamie T Smith, Thursday, 15 May 2008 09:09 (seventeen years ago)

then gay house and garage like Fire Island and Roach Motel

if you don't know about this, then U DON'T KNOW ME (so why do u judge my life?!?)

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 15 May 2008 09:25 (seventeen years ago)

I'm confused. I just meant it didn't really seem like Underworld fitted in with the aesthetic.

Jamie T Smith, Thursday, 15 May 2008 09:34 (seventeen years ago)

what is good Fire Island stuff? i liked 'White Powder Dreams'

are there any St Etienne remixes that live up to their potential?

dunno about full potential but i love Monkey Mafia mix of 'Filthy', PFM mix of 'The Sea' and the Broadcast mix of 'Angel'

blueski, Thursday, 15 May 2008 13:43 (seventeen years ago)

(i really did think fo' a moment that this "jbo" stood fo' "jody beth 'osen"...)

t**t, Thursday, 15 May 2008 13:47 (seventeen years ago)

DO
what you will...

Mark G, Thursday, 15 May 2008 13:48 (seventeen years ago)

well, fire island has a pretty slim recorded output, it's just slightly more than a one-off alias for heller & farley ...

best place to start would be "in your bones" and "fire island". if loco dice's "son of raw" remix is an audi tt then these tracks are like the 1955 300sl. infectious chunky tech-house, sloooow and spaced out, w/ bubbling acid lines in the background and organic percussion in the front. like a lot of things going on in 1992 this shit was way ahead of its time.

they also did a couple of very famous uplifting garage / disco tracks in the joey negro mode - "if you should need a friend" (ft marc anthony), "there but for the grace of god" (cover of the track by machine), "shout to the top" (ft loleatta holloway), etc etc

these are also great but when i listen to these it's in more of a studious tim finney mode of appreciating workmanlike scenius, like listening to todd edwards or something, dudes just grinding out flawless quality product without much inspiration.

but that "fire island / in your bones" EP is crazy inspired, up there w/ stuff like "smokebelch" and visnadi racing tracks and "pacific symphony"

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 15 May 2008 16:04 (seventeen years ago)

i will check out that Ep thanks. i didn't like/see the point of their cover versions (altho i heard their TBFTGOGGI before the original)

you might well argue they work better apart (Farley's old remixes, Heller's later stuff inc 'Big Love' and 'Sputnik' esp.) also

blueski, Thursday, 15 May 2008 16:08 (seventeen years ago)

not sure why i said 'later' when that was all ten years ago now, i'm just not aware of anything they've done this decade

blueski, Thursday, 15 May 2008 16:08 (seventeen years ago)

This thread inspired me to locate, insert, and press play on an actual, physical compact disc. We're through the looking glass.

kenan, Thursday, 15 May 2008 16:14 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Sunday, 18 May 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

Another vote for Raise - for some reason I've always loved this, tho no-one I know shares my appreciation...

Bill E, Sunday, 18 May 2008 23:37 (seventeen years ago)

"Everything's Gone Green" is my favourite single of all time so it had to be that. But "Raise" and "My Mercury Mouth" are also extraordinary.

Dingbod Kesterson, Monday, 19 May 2008 15:21 (seventeen years ago)

Nobody's committed themselves to One Dove yet, so I will. (Now there's an album that will get you through the dreariest of working weeks.)

henry s, Monday, 19 May 2008 15:44 (seventeen years ago)

Or would have done had they put out the correct mix.

Dingbod Kesterson, Monday, 19 May 2008 15:58 (seventeen years ago)

or would have done if they bought the album as opposed to the CD...

Mark G, Monday, 19 May 2008 16:00 (seventeen years ago)

i'm intrigued to hear the Simply Red and U2 remixes i must admit

blueski, Monday, 19 May 2008 16:42 (seventeen years ago)

does the correct mix of that One Dove album actually exist in some form, or is it one of those mythical beasts (the La's album that Lee Mavers really wants you to hear, the version of Smile that Brian Wilson labored over) that will probably never see the light of day?

henry s, Monday, 19 May 2008 16:49 (seventeen years ago)

i voted for One Dove.
i still love that album, fucked up mix of not.

mark e, Monday, 19 May 2008 20:04 (seventeen years ago)

".. or not" - i meant of course.

mark e, Monday, 19 May 2008 20:05 (seventeen years ago)
