u know, i really don't know about this one. i'm totally into Mad Lucas now, whereas i never used to be. And Do You Love Me Now and Drivin' on 9 are pretty stellar in that relaxed way that they do, which i love.

Surmounter, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:01 (seventeen years ago)

soo difficult. one vote for drivin on 9, one for no aloha. i'll need to register sockpuppets for divine hammer and do you love me now.

jergïns, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:08 (seventeen years ago)

Man, this is hard. Cannonball just for the intro alone, maybe. Drivin on 9, though.

stet, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:12 (seventeen years ago)

i know i kept thinking no aloha, it's so satisfying

divine hammer is a grower 4 me

Surmounter, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:13 (seventeen years ago)

Cannonball. Why deny the obvious?

SeekAltRoute, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:26 (seventeen years ago)

Cannonball and Saints are both GREBT, but New Year is one of the best openers of any album ever made.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:28 (seventeen years ago)

i know i love that

Saints AND Hag

Surmounter, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:29 (seventeen years ago)

Oh man. I haven't heard Cannonball in ages. Time to fire up YouTube! Surmounter you and I must by psychically in sync as I just revived a Throwing Muses thread!

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 04:00 (seventeen years ago)

Everyone on this thread OTM. Wd happily vote for anything mentioned so far, or indeed for anything except probably No Aloha. Maybe I'll go for Flipside, out of the reckoning nobody else will, and because it was the last track of side A for just about all my 90s mixtapes.

a passing spacecadet, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 09:17 (seventeen years ago)

This is really tough ... I'm going to say "Divine Hammer", because it's so damn joyous and there was never a time when I got tired of it, which I can't say for "Cannonball", "Drivin on 9", or "Saints" (to name three tracks that have been mentioned a few times already). By those criteria, I'd vote "No Aloha" or "Invisible Man" next.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 10:37 (seventeen years ago)

Summer is readyyyyyyyyyyyyy when you are

Savannah Smiles, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 11:19 (seventeen years ago)

Had to go with No Aloha on this one, though Invisible Man ( and everything else on the goddamn LP!) runs it very close.

Thomas, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 11:54 (seventeen years ago)

Cannonball and Therapy?'s Screamager pretty much defined student indie discos for me, back in the day.

ledge, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 11:56 (seventeen years ago)

do you love me now (although safari was the far better song on the EP)

electricsound, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 12:27 (seventeen years ago)

wow, so long since I've played this tape, which ruled some roosts in about 1993. I am going to bracket 'Cannonball' as a sort of indie-rock standard, and go instead for the more discreet and less celebrated effervescence of 'Divine Hammer'.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 12:50 (seventeen years ago)

had to go with "drivin on 9" because it constantly pops into my head, despite the fact that i havent heard it in years

but divine hammer is pretty damned perfect...and the one with the line "and i do not like dirt"...christ, seems ill have to dig up belly and the breeders this am

bb, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 13:24 (seventeen years ago)

ditto!

Surmounter, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 13:30 (seventeen years ago)

ditto. damn this is a good album

stet, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 13:34 (seventeen years ago)

i've always felt it's their lush album. pod is so clean, Title TK is so baked and this is just lush. the textures are so rich.

Surmounter, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 14:43 (seventeen years ago)

Saints is my favourite right now, but really it's a pretty much perfect album.

verhexen, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 15:20 (seventeen years ago)

Pod is clean?!

(NB I lent Pod to a friend and never got it back and haven't heard it for too many years because I get stuck thinking about old friends every time I nearly re-buy it, so... maybe it is)

a passing spacecadet, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 15:22 (seventeen years ago)

lime house is pretty crunchy

bb, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 15:23 (seventeen years ago)

ugh lime house is so good.

it's still quite a paired-down style of production tho, on the whole thing. think when i was a painter

Surmounter, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 15:24 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, I'd say sparse and spacious rather than clean. Amazing how good the production on a lot of these early-90's albums sounds now, so dynamic and "real"-sounding. N1ck S0uth@11 to thread :-)

Thomas, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 15:36 (seventeen years ago)

sparse. like on Glorious. i mean, who else has done anything like that song? i don't know.

Surmounter, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 15:37 (seventeen years ago)

I JUST WANNA GET ALONG. I JUST WANNA GET ALONG.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 15:38 (seventeen years ago)

oh, i don't know i never seem to be able to tell the songs apart! i mean that in a good way though. and will vote for no aloha

Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 15:39 (seventeen years ago)

xpost we need a Pod poll after this one

Thomas, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 15:43 (seventeen years ago)

doe

Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 15:44 (seventeen years ago)

my first breeders song

yes to the pod poll. i felt we shouldn't start w/ that tho

Surmounter, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 15:58 (seventeen years ago)

"Do You Love Me Now," in a squeaker. There's a tone of resignation in Deal's voice that gets me every time. Also, the way the ascending chord pattern in the chorus gets turned around at the end somehow adds to the poignancy.

The Deacon, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 16:25 (seventeen years ago)

I get stuck thinking about old friends every time I nearly re-buy it
haha I love the idea of you standing in the record shop, disc in hand, daydreaming a wistful reverie of friends gone by. Then snapping to, putting it back on the shelf and walking out.

stet, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 16:28 (seventeen years ago)

Do You Love Me Now is one of the few songs that seem so emo-meaningful when you're a dumped 15-year-old that I can still bear to listen to

stet, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 16:28 (seventeen years ago)

so sweet, but not too much.

but it could apply to many different kinds of relationships as well, which i like.

Surmounter, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 16:31 (seventeen years ago)

Invisible Man it is.

Surmounter, Thursday, 15 May 2008 16:15 (seventeen years ago)

i feel like i'm drowning when it's on, it's so full.

Surmounter, Thursday, 15 May 2008 16:16 (seventeen years ago)

drivin' on 9.

this is a 10/10 album, is it not?

CharlieNo4, Thursday, 15 May 2008 16:34 (seventeen years ago)

no question

Surmounter, Thursday, 15 May 2008 16:34 (seventeen years ago)

i love that's it's also the sell-out album

Surmounter, Thursday, 15 May 2008 16:35 (seventeen years ago)

"Drivin on 9" is a cover of Ed's Redeeming Qualities. The writer of that song was named Dom Leone (!) and passed away of cancer in 1989.

Steve Shasta, Thursday, 15 May 2008 16:42 (seventeen years ago)

I voted for "Divine Hammer".

glitter on water

Steve Shasta, Thursday, 15 May 2008 16:43 (seventeen years ago)

rly?? i didn't know that. i'd been told to check them out (ERQ)

should i?

Surmounter, Thursday, 15 May 2008 16:44 (seventeen years ago)

it's a cover? shit, that technically disqualifies it in my head. (also, how did i not know that?) divine hammer it is then.

CharlieNo4, Thursday, 15 May 2008 16:54 (seventeen years ago)

ERQ reunion shows playing Drivin' on 9

Steve Shasta, Thursday, 15 May 2008 16:57 (seventeen years ago)

I thought this would be an easy decision - until I read the whole thread and fully remembered how awesome this album is. (yeah, I'm getting all kinds 'o 93/94 flashbacks, too)

I'll go with "No Aloha," tho "Saints" is a big fave because it reminds me of wasting time at the Maryland State Fair with friends I didn't realize were assholes, yet.

Beatrix Kiddo, Thursday, 15 May 2008 17:07 (seventeen years ago)

i cant figure out why im familiar with erq...

bb, Thursday, 15 May 2008 17:17 (seventeen years ago)

"I'm just looking for a faith, waiting to be followed..."

Great song, great fuc*ing album even all these years later. "Divine Hammer" was the soundtrack to some of the best times I've ever had.

j-rock, Thursday, 15 May 2008 19:42 (seventeen years ago)

"Drivin on 9" is a cover of Ed's Redeeming Qualities. The writer of that song was named Dom Leone (!) and passed away of cancer in 1989.

you can see ERQ on screen if you can find a copy of "ed's next move," a romantic comedy about a farmboy who comes to the big city and meets an indie-rock chick. ERQ play the IRC's band and perform a couple of very cute songs.

ERQ's carrie bradley has played violin with the breeders.

fact checking cuz, Thursday, 15 May 2008 20:00 (seventeen years ago)

o ya!

Surmounter, Thursday, 15 May 2008 20:02 (seventeen years ago)

i just wanna get along!

After that --> new year, drivin on 9, cannonball, divine hammer.. um.. I love the whole thing really. got this as a birthday gift for a friend in 94.. still great

daria-g, Thursday, 15 May 2008 21:25 (seventeen years ago)

this is and Mellow Gold are the only "alternative" albums from my high school years that i can still listen to front to back.

Granny Dainger, Thursday, 15 May 2008 21:31 (seventeen years ago)

this is a 10/10 album, is it not?

'Tis.

The Deacon, Thursday, 15 May 2008 21:36 (seventeen years ago)

I voted "Cannonball." Always wondered -- is it really a reggae song? Discuss.

Jake Brown, Thursday, 15 May 2008 21:41 (seventeen years ago)

yeah whenever I get embarrassed about stuff I liked in high school I try & remember I was a big fan of the breeders

daria-g, Thursday, 15 May 2008 21:45 (seventeen years ago)

i like pod a little better but yeah this album roolz

latebloomer, Thursday, 15 May 2008 21:59 (seventeen years ago)

A real toughie

'No Aloha' or 'Divine Hammer' - or 'Invisible Man' . Shit, the whole lot, really.

Fer Ark, Thursday, 15 May 2008 22:47 (seventeen years ago)

i like Pod a little better too but still, ya.

Pod is 10/10 too. for SURE.

Surmounter, Thursday, 15 May 2008 23:05 (seventeen years ago)

"Cannonball" kicks ass, but "Divine Hammer" by itself can redeem all the sins of alt-rock. My god what a beautiful, sweet, foamy recording.

Doctor Casino, Friday, 16 May 2008 04:54 (seventeen years ago)

The carpenter goes Bang! - bang, bang.

Doctor Casino, Friday, 16 May 2008 04:56 (seventeen years ago)

would this album have been stronger or much the same had safari been included?

electricsound, Friday, 16 May 2008 04:58 (seventeen years ago)

'Cannonball' will win it (or should win it), so I'm going for 'I Just Wanna Get Along '

zeus, Friday, 16 May 2008 11:45 (seventeen years ago)

Thinking "No Aloha"'ll win it actually. Could've voted for Saints or New Year too, I don't know.

Niles Caulder, Friday, 16 May 2008 11:51 (seventeen years ago)

"Cannonball" is an embarrassment of riches, so much better than it needed to be.

Clockcleaner's cover of "Divine Hammer" is A++.

etc, Friday, 16 May 2008 13:23 (seventeen years ago)

ugh i kno. one of those you forget how good it is cuz everyone thought it was so good to begin with

Surmounter, Friday, 16 May 2008 14:06 (seventeen years ago)

(cannonball)

Surmounter, Friday, 16 May 2008 14:06 (seventeen years ago)

it's kind of uncanny how poppy this album is! in the best way possible

Surmounter, Friday, 16 May 2008 14:07 (seventeen years ago)

sorta shocked at love for "No Aloha" because it's always been a momentum killer on this record when I'm playing it (am listening to the album currently), especially after "Roi", but "Do You Love Me Now" picks things back up. I voted for "New Year" which is such a great opener.

Euler, Friday, 16 May 2008 14:28 (seventeen years ago)

oh No Aloha always a highlight 4 me... when it kicks in

Surmounter, Friday, 16 May 2008 14:34 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Friday, 16 May 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

get em in folks

Surmounter, Saturday, 17 May 2008 21:02 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Saturday, 17 May 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

poor roi

jergïns, Saturday, 17 May 2008 23:02 (seventeen years ago)

iiinteresting

Surmounter, Saturday, 17 May 2008 23:59 (seventeen years ago)

I feel like "Cannonball" got victimized by the "Cannonball is my favorite but will obviously win so I'm voting for No Aloha / Divine Hammer / other idiosyncratic fave" vote.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Sunday, 18 May 2008 00:18 (seventeen years ago)

I legitimately enjoy Divine Hammer the best, which is why I voted for it. I can't speak for everyone though.

billstevejim, Sunday, 18 May 2008 05:14 (seventeen years ago)

etc.^^^ absolutely otm with Clockcleaner above.

Please, I urge you to seek out their take on Divine Hammer.

Fer Ark, Sunday, 18 May 2008 14:34 (seventeen years ago)

they still absolutely smoke live, with "divine hammer" and "cannonball" remaining highlights (along with the new "overglazed"!)

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 05:33 (fifteen years ago)
