THE TURTLES SUE OVER ICE CUBE SONG
American rock group THE TURTLES are suing their former label Capitol Records for breach of contract and copyright infringement, after a song they claim to have written was sampled by rapper ICE CUBE in 1990.
The Turtles' founding members Mark 'Flo' Volman and Howard 'Eddie' Kaylan, otherwise known as Flo & Eddie, claim executives at Capitol reneged on an agreement to pay royalties for the use of their song Buzzsaw - which appeared in part on Ice Cube's Jackin' For Beats, from his EP Kill At Will.
In legal papers obtained by website TMZ.com and filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Tuesday (13May08), Volman and Kaylan allege they entered a deal with Capitol bosses in December 1990 regarding Buzzsaw, which covered royalty payments for the track.
However, the pair claim they have not received anything from Capitol, despite the release of various albums and compilations featuring Ice Cube's version of the track in the years since 1990.
The duo, best known for The Turtles' 1967 hit Happy Together, are seeking a minimum of $25,000 (£12,500) in damages - and have placed a maximum settlement figure of $70,000 (£35,000) on their complaint.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 16 May 2008 21:06 (seventeen years ago)

like every assignment i turned into school from like 1988 to 1991 was about rap.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 16 May 2008 21:07 (seventeen years ago)

I love 'em all, of course, but I think I may go for "Humpty Dance" since it incorporates the jacked beat into his flow at the moment the track switches up, plus the line about the brothers with the funny haircuts.

Oilyrags, Friday, 16 May 2008 21:09 (seventeen years ago)

The use of "Terrordome" is too, too funny.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Saturday, 17 May 2008 06:35 (seventeen years ago)

ten months pass...

In a better world, someone would remake this song every six months or so.

You talking about the beat from Billy Squier's Big Beat or the sample from EPMD's You Gotz to Chill?

MarkoP, Monday, 7 April 2014 19:58 (eleven years ago)

sorry it's neither of those. I mean the loop that runs from around 0:55 through 1:17 or so (when the Big Beat sample comes in)

Ahh. Just realized the EPMD song that I found that it sampled for that part was a different one that the one mentioned in the poll:

The guitar in the EPMD song is sampled from BT Express:

LOVE, LOVE "Jackin' for Beats", totally would have voted for the "Terrordome" beat jack if I'd registered when this poll was created.

Frontier Psychiatrist, Tuesday, 8 April 2014 10:51 (eleven years ago)

I always loved that the "Kill At Will" EP was also released in a clean version (called just "At Will"!) with a different tracklist and some different lyrics and takes.
