"he left us a book to believe in
in it we've got a lot to learn."

vs.

"save the babies."

Heard "What's Going On?" on the repetitive oldies station recently.

Pleasant Plains, Friday, 16 May 2008 14:20 (seventeen years ago)

me too. on sunday, i think it was.

braveclub, Friday, 16 May 2008 14:59 (seventeen years ago)

That station plays "What's Going On?", "Green-Eyed Lady", and "One Way or Another" pretty much every hour, so it's an okay station by me.

Pleasant Plains, Friday, 16 May 2008 15:01 (seventeen years ago)

it came on straight after 'wichita lineman' too

braveclub, Friday, 16 May 2008 15:02 (seventeen years ago)

Late last year. Heard a local rapper sample something I couldn't place right away. Turns out it was the choral part at the end of "Mercy..." The rap wasn't so hot but the sample was very well done. Someone should steal the idea.

Kevin John Bozelka, Friday, 16 May 2008 15:02 (seventeen years ago)

yesterday, because the after-work drive-time dude on the local sports talk station always uses "mercy mercy me" as his ending bumper music

I just heard Cyndi Lauper's cover of "What's Going On?" on a Casey Kasem '80s countdown rebroadcast a week or two ago.

Joseph McCombs, Saturday, 17 May 2008 06:09 (seventeen years ago)

It had been 20 years since I'd heard it; I'd completely forgotten about its existence.

Joseph McCombs, Saturday, 17 May 2008 06:09 (seventeen years ago)

my little sis sings several of the cuts off this to me regularly; she sang "What's Happening Brother" to me yesterday.

Frogman Henry, Saturday, 17 May 2008 08:07 (seventeen years ago)

I ask my cat "Hey baby, what you know good?" all the time.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Saturday, 17 May 2008 09:03 (seventeen years ago)

Listened to the album about one month ago.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 17 May 2008 09:34 (seventeen years ago)

I heard the title tune yesterday, when I played it at a DJ gig. That prompted me to listen to the whole album on the way home from the gig, I hadn't really listened it through in ages. I'd totally forgotten how great "Make Me Wanna Holler" is, it's almost as good as the title tune. I still think the album as a whole is overrated though, most of the tunes between the first and the last are kinda formless and samey. (I know they're supposed form a suite or something, but that just emphasizes the sameyness.) In the "best soul album ever" category I think both Curtis and Everything Is Everything beat this one easily.

Tuomas, Saturday, 17 May 2008 15:38 (seventeen years ago)

I listen to it fairly often for bass inspiration. I think the album would be a lot less interesting if it had more standard bass playing.

But I agree that a few Curtis albums are better than any Marvin album.

Patrick South, Saturday, 17 May 2008 15:51 (seventeen years ago)

This inspired me to do a poll:

"Curtis" vs. "What's Going On" vs. "Everything Is Everything" vs. "First Take"

Tuomas, Saturday, 17 May 2008 15:54 (seventeen years ago)

(x-post)

I agree that the basslines are pretty cool even in the more mediocre tunes.

Tuomas, Saturday, 17 May 2008 15:54 (seventeen years ago)

it's on my ipod and, despite having the entire drive filled up, pops up with surprising frequency.

Binjominia, Saturday, 17 May 2008 16:02 (seventeen years ago)

oo i noticed the bass playing this time through too. some of the songs on this still make tear up. 'mercy mercy me' came on while i was getting soy milk at ralph's last year and i had to compose myself, pathetic.

Can't remember, but I listened to "Ain't That Peculiar" mere hours ago.
