Also,

2.) 90s-era french fry machines at McDonalds sounded an alarm that sounded like "Oye Como Va" when the fires were done.

3.) I spent the night in a trailer once where all the floor vents were banged up. When the heating kicked on, the air coming out sounded like James Brown.

What ordinary sounds in life remind you of songs you've heard? (Sound effects don't count.)

"when the fries were done" though the typo sounds better.

I'm coming out of outrage retirement.

In my old office, the "ding" of the elevator sounded like a particular passage from Jon Brion's I Heart Huckabees score.

jaymc, Friday, 16 May 2008 16:55 (seventeen years ago)

I sat in a hospital 10 years ago that emitted a droning hum (from heating vents, maybe?) that sounded like "Jenny Ondioline." Or at least it provided a good starting point for me to quietly sing "Jenny Ondioline" on top of it.

jaymc, Friday, 16 May 2008 16:58 (seventeen years ago)

I knew there was another thread, but couldn't remember to use the search word "swivel".

When I got to the hospital room where my dad was in a coma, I couldn't for the life of me figure out why the hospital felt obliged to pipe in Kenny Fucking G over the PA system. After awhile, I realized that the reedy saxophone sound was coming from his ventilator.

(Dad's okay now. Still hate Kenny G though.)

The french-fry machine at McDonald's plays "Oye Coma Va".

I've been on ILX too long.

So you think.

I really vividly remember hearing a dog bark about 11 years ago and it sounding like the noise at the start of Sure Shot by the Beastie Boys, but that might be a sample of a dog barking and I can't be arsed to check

The squeaking door at my workplace is the exact same pitch Eno hits in the middle of his synth solo in Roxy Music's "Editions Of You."

I stayed in a hotel once where the elevator 'ding' sound when it arrived at a floor was really similiar to the first keyboard note on Ted Leo's The Tyranny of Distance and proceeded to keep "Biomusicology" in my head that entire week.

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 16 May 2008 19:10 (seventeen years ago)

Plenty of self closing doors sound like John Cale viola drones.

snoball, Friday, 16 May 2008 19:43 (seventeen years ago)

Actually, I was sitting in a train station in Champaign, Illinois once, listening to the Tyranny of Distance in which the sound that went off before every announcement was a ringer for that whole first keyboard bit of "Biomusicology."

In subway stations in Toronto, the music that precedes announcements sounds like the first part of "Kung Fu Fighting".

The Wild Oats store here (now closed) had a sound when they interrupted the background music that sounded like the opening keyboard bit from Blues Image "Ride Captain Ride." I never got tired of hearing that.

And a disk drive (one of the big, multi-platter removable ones) where I used to work made a grinding sound like this sound from one of Yo La Tengo's songs (mid-period, can't remember which song).

I worked in a pharmacy whose dot matrix script printer emitted a whine that totally sounded like a sonic youth guitar jam. I probably said this on that other thread come to think of it.

Trayce, Sunday, 18 May 2008 11:49 (seventeen years ago)

There's a pharmacy on University Place where every time you walk in and out of their door, there's this two-note chime that sounds like the first two notes of the riff of "Meninblack" by the Stranglers.

Alex in NYC, Sunday, 18 May 2008 12:19 (seventeen years ago)

the text-message notification sound on my roommate's phone sounds exactly like the first three notes of "Black Coffee in Bed"

bernard snowy, Sunday, 18 May 2008 16:47 (seventeen years ago)

When I start my Ford Focus up in Winter it sounds like a Greg Ginn Guitar solo.
It needs a service badly.

Fer Ark, Sunday, 18 May 2008 17:14 (seventeen years ago)

two months pass...

We have an alarm clock that sounds like "Wounded Kite @ :17".
