Four albums released within a time period of two years, all considered among the best soul albums ever, all mixing political observation with Christian spirituality. Which one is the best?

Marvin Gaye by cirka a billion landslides.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 17 May 2008 19:51 (seventeen years ago)

curtis > first take > whats going on (never heard donny hathaway)

and what, Saturday, 17 May 2008 19:55 (seventeen years ago)

First Take > Curtis (I prefer ROOTS) >>> Everything is Everything >>>>> WHat's Goin On.

First Take is a masterpiece... "Angelitos Negros," "I Told Jesus," "Comapred to What?" does it get any better than that? one of the more underrated albums I think... Roberta is underrated as a whole, her first 3/4 albums are perfection.

The Brainwasher, Saturday, 17 May 2008 19:59 (seventeen years ago)

Agree about Roberta - I haven't heard Everything is Everything, but I have Donny's S/T and the album with Flack, and...... I find him kinda undewhelming for an artist who's supposed to be so major; maybe it'll click one day.

sonofstan, Saturday, 17 May 2008 20:08 (seventeen years ago)

but Everything Is Everything is his masterpiece so don't judge him conclusively until you get that

Curtis >>> Superfly >>> Roots

and yes, WHERE IS STEVIE?

Innervisions would cause havoc in this poll (MoMM too)

bakerstreetsaxsolo, Saturday, 17 May 2008 23:54 (seventeen years ago)

putting stevie in almost any poll makes it too lopsided
i voted curtis. haven't heard the hathaway either, cause I was also underwhelmed by the little i've heard of him.

Granny Dainger, Sunday, 18 May 2008 01:06 (seventeen years ago)

thanks for wrecking our collective heads, Tuomas. This is a toughie.

I haven't heard Donny Hathaway's S/T album, but from what I've gathered it's considered to be his worst, so yeah, I wouldn't judge him based on that. If you like the other three albums here, you're almost certain to like Everything Is Everything.

As for the selection of albums here, it was done on a subjective basis, but I do feel there are things common with all four. For example, all of them have this strong earthy gospel feel I don't hear as much in Stevie Wonder's 70s stuff, though obviously it's equally good.

Tuomas, Sunday, 18 May 2008 15:18 (seventeen years ago)

OK - have to get it so.

sonofstan, Sunday, 18 May 2008 15:45 (seventeen years ago)

Curtis.

chap, Sunday, 18 May 2008 17:45 (seventeen years ago)

I'm having a real tough time with this. I know I won't vote for What's Going On, but the three other albums are all so great, though in somewhat different ways, so what I like the most pretty much depends on my mood of the day.

Tuomas, Monday, 19 May 2008 09:44 (seventeen years ago)

Still rather obviously Marvin Gaye, but "Everything Is Everything" by Phoenix is a great song ;)

Geir Hongro, Monday, 19 May 2008 12:45 (seventeen years ago)

Bump.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 05:17 (seventeen years ago)

Everything is everything on this thread, but I voted for First Take.

I read a funny story about Donny Hathaway in Jerry Wexler's book. One time Donny held up a session for hours, deep into the night, by requesting take after take, obsessing about the drumbeat, which he thought was off. "What's the matter with the two, Donny?" Jerry asked him. "It's wavering- can't you hear it?" The drummer was Al Jackson.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Sunday, 25 May 2008 00:14 (seventeen years ago)

Another story from the same page of the same book, involving another drummer. Donny was a very deep cat and had a kind of mystical, cryptic way of expressing himself. Once after listening to some long incomprehensible instructions, Grady Tate finally cut him off and said "Look, we're musicians and we don't understand you. Talk it right, or we walk."

CURTIS
