Mackro Mackro, Sunday, 18 May 2008 22:37 (seventeen years ago)

hah. "leave me alone", without having to think for a second. although PCL is far from my favourite NO album.

actually, these are all fucking great songs. even "working overtime".

grimly fiendish, Sunday, 18 May 2008 22:52 (seventeen years ago)

leave me alone just edges dream attack

akm, Sunday, 18 May 2008 22:54 (seventeen years ago)

Fuck no, "Dream Attack".

In general, they're better at ending an album than opening one.

HI DERE, Sunday, 18 May 2008 22:55 (seventeen years ago)

my problem with "dream attack" is that it's almost totally eclipsed by "vanishing point" before it. i didn't even notice it the first few times i heard this album, because i was sitting there stunned.

In general, they're better at ending an album than opening one

yeh, i couldn't really rank these at all. "avalanche" is far too sweet and brittle a confection to work in the way i imagine it could have done, but that doesn't mean i don't adore it.

grimly fiendish, Sunday, 18 May 2008 22:59 (seventeen years ago)

"Face Up" for me.

Mackro Mackro, Sunday, 18 May 2008 23:00 (seventeen years ago)

Although I love "Every Little Counts" too... yeah yeah the *CUETEST* closing New Order song... ....TIHSYLOHGMO?NOGNIOGS'tahw&^&(**(!

Mackro Mackro, Sunday, 18 May 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

Actually, I love "Run Wild" too. Fuck. Grimly OTM.

Mackro Mackro, Sunday, 18 May 2008 23:02 (seventeen years ago)

Leave Me Alone vs. Face Up FITE! Wait! Oh no...Run Wild is here. Oh for the love of Christ, kill me now. Please kill me now. The choice cannot possibly be made.

Bimble, Sunday, 18 May 2008 23:19 (seventeen years ago)

But...but...Every Little Counts! aggggggh This poll is tragedy, I say. I living tragedy of ILM. Won't anyone vote for that one? PLEASE?

Bimble, Sunday, 18 May 2008 23:22 (seventeen years ago)

I did lol

Curt1s Stephens, Sunday, 18 May 2008 23:22 (seventeen years ago)

"Leave Me Alone", not so much as a closing track but as (one of) the very best New Order tracks in any place on the album.

Euler, Sunday, 18 May 2008 23:23 (seventeen years ago)

I love "Dream Attack"

Alex in NYC, Sunday, 18 May 2008 23:31 (seventeen years ago)

Dream Attack is one of my favorite NO songs. The fact it closes my favorite album of theirs is just gravy.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 18 May 2008 23:35 (seventeen years ago)

"Leave Me Alone" is easily the most gorgeous song off Power, Corruption & Lies. But I gotta go with "Face Up" as it brings to a close my vote for the greatest album ever made.

What band was better than this band? None? Ok, that's what I thought.

Kevin John Bozelka, Monday, 19 May 2008 03:03 (seventeen years ago)

And "Face Up!" Oooh so deliciously narsty, esp. given the album cover (and the video for "The Perfect Kiss").

Wait, who is better than this band?

Kevin John Bozelka, Monday, 19 May 2008 03:05 (seventeen years ago)

I just remembered that the one time I saw them back in 1989 they opened the set with a huge, aggro version of "Dream Attack." Hell of a start.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 19 May 2008 14:18 (seventeen years ago)

The Cure is better than New Order. Ditto Siouxsie & the Banshees.

HI DERE, Monday, 19 May 2008 14:24 (seventeen years ago)

Dream Attack for me. Easier than the opener poll.

Neil S, Monday, 19 May 2008 14:26 (seventeen years ago)

Don't sniff at "Run Wild," which ends with their most characteristic couplet, "I'm gonna live till I die/I'm gonna live to get high."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 19 May 2008 14:26 (seventeen years ago)

So, there's one more set of tracks to come, right?

Mark G, Monday, 19 May 2008 14:28 (seventeen years ago)

I love every song on this list to bits. I'm stuck between "Face Up" and "Dream Attack," but will go with the former for its doomy synth and programmed drum clatter, Bernard's gulped vocals, and that fantastic Hook bassline.

WILL THE BAND REMASTER THESE ALBUMS ALREADY???

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 19 May 2008 14:28 (seventeen years ago)

Steven Morris says that re issues and bonus tracks are on the way - and the remaining 7 songs from the WFTSC sessions are coming out too - 'twas on Teletext a few weeks back

I am using your worlds, Monday, 19 May 2008 14:31 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I saw that, forgot where till you said.

Mark G, Monday, 19 May 2008 14:33 (seventeen years ago)

dream attack by miles and miles.

Noodle Vague, Monday, 19 May 2008 17:31 (seventeen years ago)

For once, I don't have think about this: Dream Attack!!!

baaderonixx, Monday, 19 May 2008 17:48 (seventeen years ago)

WILL THE BAND REMASTER THESE ALBUMS ALREADY???

that could be interesting. two sets of remasters: hooky's and barney/stephen's. heh.

grimly fiendish, Monday, 19 May 2008 21:06 (seventeen years ago)

i thought that turned out to be a bullshit story

akm, Monday, 19 May 2008 21:36 (seventeen years ago)

WILL THE BAND REMASTER THESE ALBUMS ALREADY???

The Joy Division remasters were in the form of 2 CD deluxe edition with lots of bonus stuff and extensive liner notes. It is not unthinkable that the same thing will be done regarding New Order's back catalogue.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 19 May 2008 22:36 (seventeen years ago)

"Dream Attack."

Spencer Chow, Monday, 19 May 2008 22:47 (seventeen years ago)

Tough choice, but went for "Face up".

Rob M v2, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 07:56 (seventeen years ago)

Too difficult - I cannot vote. Denial is the worst track here but after that...

Ned Trifle II, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 10:53 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

"Leave Me Alone" is my favorite by far. Maybe it's just nostalgia, but to my ears their guitar sound was never as perfect as on that album.

Dan S, Thursday, 22 May 2008 06:25 (seventeen years ago)

I voted for "Leave Me Alone", even though it broke my heart to do so. I really wanted to go for "Run Wild" cause I know it won't get as many votes, and well..."Face Up" is another whole heap of guilt. Sigh. But I had to choose one.

Bimble, Thursday, 22 May 2008 07:52 (seventeen years ago)

WILL THE NEW ORDER GODS EVER FORGIVE ME???

Bimble, Thursday, 22 May 2008 07:59 (seventeen years ago)

Grimly! Back me up here.

Bimble, Thursday, 22 May 2008 08:00 (seventeen years ago)

Don't even get me started on the live versions.

Bimble, Thursday, 22 May 2008 08:00 (seventeen years ago)

"Leave Me Alone", no contest.

New Order's habit of going OMGWTFLOL for their album closing tracks (Working Overtime, Every Little Counts, etc.) is one of the more annoying things about them. Therefore New Order Closing Tracks > New Order Opening Tracks arguments are crazy talk.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Thursday, 22 May 2008 15:12 (seventeen years ago)

"Face Up" sucks a huge amount of shit.

HI DERE, Thursday, 22 May 2008 15:15 (seventeen years ago)

Oh how I cannot bear the thought of you.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 22 May 2008 15:31 (seventeen years ago)

lol

Mackro Mackro, Thursday, 22 May 2008 15:32 (seventeen years ago)

Dan and I have a long standing fued about which version of "Subculture" is the best. I say the Low-Life version. He says I'm crazy as fuck and reps for the single version.

Mackro Mackro, Thursday, 22 May 2008 15:34 (seventeen years ago)

Totally "Every Little Counts" - That record skip at the end ... coming right after Bernard's maudlin broken-hearted meanderings as his grasp on life slips ... chilling stuff

zaxxon25, Thursday, 22 May 2008 22:12 (seventeen years ago)

Tell Dan that the Low-Life version is as magical as "Domino Dancing."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 22 May 2008 22:15 (seventeen years ago)

That's 100% correct.

HI DERE, Thursday, 22 May 2008 22:17 (seventeen years ago)

the vocal and lyrics on face up are aggravating but i love all the sounds. dream attack over all.

Alan, Thursday, 22 May 2008 22:23 (seventeen years ago)

aggravating more than usual i mean

Alan, Thursday, 22 May 2008 22:23 (seventeen years ago)

n that new order like disco lady for dance club kids

would rather hear rap singers!!!!!

but gay is ok at least u don't swing my girl and have smashnosed!

Niblick Painting Escarole, Thursday, 22 May 2008 22:28 (seventeen years ago)

"Dream Attack" has some of my favorite Sumner singing; the man sounds in awe of a love capable of such a night of awesome humping.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 22 May 2008 22:29 (seventeen years ago)

single version of subculture is more danceable and smoother. i prefer to listen to the lowlife version though, it's JAUNTIER!

Alan, Thursday, 22 May 2008 22:29 (seventeen years ago)

I get Dan's complaints about how amateurish Barney's singing is, but it helps the song -- I imagine this swinger of average looks in bad sneakers convincing himself he's gonna get laid tonight.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 22 May 2008 22:32 (seventeen years ago)

oh god it's Every Little Counts isn't it. damn. no revote

Alan, Thursday, 22 May 2008 22:33 (seventeen years ago)

I think I've heard "Face Up" in its entirety once.

HI DERE, Thursday, 22 May 2008 22:35 (seventeen years ago)

(btw I was referring to the original "Subculture")

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 22 May 2008 22:37 (seventeen years ago)

I'm not as opposed to the original "Subculture" as I used to be but "Face Up" can still fuck right off.

HI DERE, Thursday, 22 May 2008 22:40 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Thursday, 22 May 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

Well then.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 22 May 2008 23:12 (seventeen years ago)

as the vinyl has no Side 1 or Side 2 (or any i can remember seeing anyway) i've always thought that PC&L starts with "Your Silent Face" and ends with "586". it seems so wrong the other way!

zappi, Thursday, 22 May 2008 23:23 (seventeen years ago)

those who voted for "avalanche" and "denial": i salute you. "denial" would probably have been my second choice.

surprised by this result, but pleasantly so: didn't realise so many other people loved "leave me alone". and thought "dream attack" would romp it.

grimly fiendish, Thursday, 22 May 2008 23:24 (seventeen years ago)

as the vinyl has no Side 1 or Side 2

eh? there's always an A or a B in the run-out groove, dude :)

grimly fiendish, Thursday, 22 May 2008 23:24 (seventeen years ago)

Nice battle this one.

Mackro Mackro, Thursday, 22 May 2008 23:36 (seventeen years ago)

Alfred, you are a trip with these song interpretations.

Bimble, Thursday, 22 May 2008 23:40 (seventeen years ago)

didn't realise so many other people loved "leave me alone"

it's the same problem we're gonna have when the Cure poll results are in: the songs from Disintegration are gonna win cause the album's the most widely heard in their discography. here, the casual New Order fan just has Power Corruption & Lies, so the opening and closing tracks win the polls.

stephen, Friday, 23 May 2008 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

heheheh. as someone who voted for both AoC and LMA, and for plainsong on the cure openers poll, i feel i should articulate a counter-argument.

but nah, you could be right :)

grimly fiendish, Friday, 23 May 2008 00:02 (seventeen years ago)

the counter argument is that those albums are the most widely heard because they are the bands' best efforts. which means, the opening and closing tracks on their best albums would be likely to win anyway, had everyone heard every album.

stephen, Friday, 23 May 2008 00:08 (seventeen years ago)

Very surprised by the result and I'm thinking stephen is correct to a degree.

Spencer Chow, Friday, 23 May 2008 00:32 (seventeen years ago)

"Leave Me Alone" is gorgeous. I don't mind "Dream Attack" losing to it.

I wish at least one person had voted for "Working Overtime".

HI DERE, Friday, 23 May 2008 02:35 (seventeen years ago)

Who else voted for Denial then?

Dr.C, Friday, 23 May 2008 07:55 (seventeen years ago)

Had I seen this poll I would have picked Dream Attack, and it would have been a tie.

DavidM, Friday, 23 May 2008 18:14 (seventeen years ago)

Let's have a second round!

baaderonixx, Saturday, 24 May 2008 08:15 (seventeen years ago)

the casual New Order fan just has Power Corruption & Lies

Nah. When I was growing up, New Order seemed a band who didn't have a single canonical "best album", and then Technique came out I loved it and over time, found other people did too. After Substance or the Best Of, I'd have thought Technique, if anything, would be the next one people get. P,C&L might be up there too, but it's in no way a walkover that would skew a poll.

Alba, Saturday, 24 May 2008 08:53 (seventeen years ago)

[we need a Casual New Order fans: which one album do you own? poll]

Alba, Saturday, 24 May 2008 08:54 (seventeen years ago)

There are no casual NO fans

baaderonixx, Saturday, 24 May 2008 09:57 (seventeen years ago)

the counter argument is that those albums are the most widely heard because they are the bands' best efforts. which means, the opening and closing tracks on their best albums would be likely to win anyway, had everyone heard every album.

No, the counterargument is that "Leave Me Alone" and "Age of Consent" >>>> everything else on PC&L, and so those tracks stick out more compared to more uniformly great albums like "Technique".

NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 25 May 2008 12:37 (seventeen years ago)

You forgot "Your Silent Face"

baaderonixx, Sunday, 25 May 2008 15:14 (seventeen years ago)

"Your Silent Face" is even better than "Leave Me Alone" and "Age of Consent". The majesty of its opening synth melody has been much imitated by other groups, but never matched.
