sadly, so often the tracks themselves never live up to the promise of the title

WAR IN A SOUTH AFRICAN (VERSION)?

BUCK ROGERS IN THE BLACK HOLE vs. THE DEATH OF MR SPOCK

Alex in SF, Monday, 19 May 2008 20:37 (seventeen years ago)

Having the Buck Rogers one come up on my ipod prompted this.

Granny Dainger, Monday, 19 May 2008 20:58 (seventeen years ago)

What's it the dub of?

Alex in SF, Monday, 19 May 2008 20:59 (seventeen years ago)

12. EMBARASSMENT - Gregory Isaacs All Stars

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 19 May 2008 21:01 (seventeen years ago)

12. THE SON OF DARHT VADAR - Roots Radics Band

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 19 May 2008 21:02 (seventeen years ago)

i own both of these and my favorite is "I TRIM THE BARBER"

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 19 May 2008 21:02 (seventeen years ago)

i mean, musically that's the best track

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 19 May 2008 21:03 (seventeen years ago)

FLASH GORDON MEETS LUKE SKY WALKER

Alex in SF, Monday, 19 May 2008 21:03 (seventeen years ago)

All the "Barber" tracks are great.

Alex in SF, Monday, 19 May 2008 21:04 (seventeen years ago)

I don't have either of these collections (although I suspect I've heard a bunch of these tracks by different names) but I will totally rep for the Gregory Isaacs dubs on here.

Alex in SF, Monday, 19 May 2008 21:08 (seventeen years ago)

I don't know what it's a dub of. The lyrics are "you want a night loving...you really need night loving..."
Agreed on the Barber, er, cuts.

Granny Dainger, Monday, 19 May 2008 21:09 (seventeen years ago)

I voted "The Alien Aborts" btw, cause it sounds like a lost Bradbury novella. Or a sci-fi corollary to The Dude Abides.

thank god for obsessive types

Granny Dainger, Monday, 19 May 2008 21:34 (seventeen years ago)

Are there two volumes of these? I've only got the first one. All the Gregory Isaacs dubs are really good, don't know who did them. REBEL DANCE, DUBBIN AND WAILIN are great. And Upsetters, of course.

Tom D., Tuesday, 20 May 2008 08:48 (seventeen years ago)

DUB DAT - The Upsetters

tru dat

Mark G, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 08:52 (seventeen years ago)

Oh I misunderstood the premise of the thread (xp). I'm aware that a lot of people who buy dub don't listen to it.

Tom D., Tuesday, 20 May 2008 08:55 (seventeen years ago)

What do they do with it, then?

Mark G, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 09:20 (seventeen years ago)

Try to impress girls with them

Tom D., Tuesday, 20 May 2008 09:22 (seventeen years ago)

It's more:

"Oh I've heard this dub stuff's supposed to be good... oh that's quite cheap... and it's a boxset... I'll have that then... nah, don't like this stuff much."

Tom D., Tuesday, 20 May 2008 09:25 (seventeen years ago)

i just skimmed through all these tracks, and the best dubs (ie best engineered, not necessarily the best riddim) are all the ones credited to Roots Radics Band. All sound like Scientist dubs, to my ears.

Granny Dainger, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 13:42 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

Roots Radics + Scientist + Junjo circa 80-82 should be considered a subgenre of reggae/dub.

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 23:13 (seventeen years ago)

"All the Gregory Isaacs dubs are really good, don't know who did them."

Jammy did Slum in Dub stuff, I believe.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 23:20 (seventeen years ago)

"i just skimmed through all these tracks, and the best dubs (ie best engineered, not necessarily the best riddim) are all the ones credited to Roots Radics Band."

What do you mean by engineer(ed)? Best effects? Or best sound?

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 23:22 (seventeen years ago)

8. DUBBING SANDRA - The Upsetters

sounds like a romantic comedy

s1ocki, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 23:23 (seventeen years ago)

EXCELLENT site

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 23:25 (seventeen years ago)

i think half of the tracks in these boxes are by the roots radics

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 23:25 (seventeen years ago)

also i'm pretty sure the best tracks are the king tubby dubs. case in point: "tubby's conversation".

who are "the jahlights"? their track is EPIC.

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 01:02 (seventeen years ago)

both, alex! catch-all term for anything that was done to the original track.

Granny Dainger, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 01:15 (seventeen years ago)

I don't know anything or care about dub but I like these box sets a whole lot

Kath, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 01:22 (seventeen years ago)

Roots Radics + Scientist + Junjo circa 80-82 should be considered a subgenre of reggae/dub.

dancehall?

am0n, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 01:26 (seventeen years ago)

i never bought these sets cuz i thought they overlapped too much with other cds i had but looking at the tracklists now i think i've been wrong

am0n, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 01:27 (seventeen years ago)

No you were right. A lot of these mis-named versions of other stuff you probably have (according to Steve Barker of the Wire anyway.)

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 01:36 (seventeen years ago)

8. DOCTOR SEATON IN THE ECHO CHAMBER - Rupie Edwards All Stars

^is this the same track as this doctor seaton from a tubby comp.

am0n, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 01:55 (seventeen years ago)

It's like one of the other boxes, has a version of "Come Together" with the writer credit as "Unknown"...

Mark G, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 10:14 (seventeen years ago)

that era and some of those recordings are early dancehall style but the sound to me is more of a bare bass + drum sound. i don't think of them as dancehall at all but they def. have a distinct sound unlike any other combination.

brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 15:07 (seventeen years ago)

"i don't think of them as dancehall at all"

You are alone then. For everyone else the rise of the Roots Radics = dancehall.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 16:02 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

People voting on the tracks themselves methinks.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 23:03 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, alex and am0n, i know i'm alone in my opinion. part of the problem is I don't have much knowledge of dancehall. listening to Johnny Osborne - Fally Lover feels like i'm listening to reggae and not dancehall.

can you illustrate the differences between an early Dancehall and roots reggae? By early dancehall i guess i mean the sound you attributed to Roots Radics circa 80-82.

brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 23:20 (seventeen years ago)

i think that junjo/radics sound IS what separates dancehall from reggae but also the singing/deejaying/singjaying. i think the confusion comes more from the term "dancehall" getting broadly applied to later eras without differenting them as digital, ragga, one-drop, whatever

am0n, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 23:32 (seventeen years ago)

*differentiating

am0n, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 23:34 (seventeen years ago)

greensleeves gets it right, they call their 79-82 anthems comp. dancehall but all their other comps are ragga/ragga dancehall

am0n, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 23:39 (seventeen years ago)

i didn't vote btw. did anyone compare that doctor seaton?

am0n, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 23:41 (seventeen years ago)

That album being a George Formby tribute?

Mark G, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 23:43 (seventeen years ago)

what?

am0n, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 23:47 (seventeen years ago)

ah, that would make sense. i'm listening to Ranking Dread - In Dub right now and i see this LP is classified as both Dancehall and Dub so i'm trying to get to the bottom of what makes this Dancehall musically. Is it simply the focus on the bass and drums? from what i can tell the common thread in this dancehall sound is the sparse instrumentation accenting the bass and drums.

http://www.roots-archives.com/release/771

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 22 May 2008 00:02 (seventeen years ago)

A) Sparse production (so yes focus on d'n'b, lack of horns, etc.)

B) Complete dearth of new riddims (almost everything is a re-version of a classic Studio One/Treasure Isle riddim)

C) Shift away from rasta themes (not completely, but enough)

D) Cocaine

Alex in SF, Thursday, 22 May 2008 00:11 (seventeen years ago)

Also it's not like there was some BAM okay now roots is over thing and dancehall begins cut off or anything. Plenty of guys (esp. Osbourne, Minott) who had begun to thrive at the end of the 70s straddle both eras.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 22 May 2008 00:14 (seventeen years ago)

the dub rarities box is really good

am0n, Saturday, 31 May 2008 22:30 (seventeen years ago)

want to change my vote for favorite track title to WHAT IS CATTY?
