The Best Rolling Stones Opening Track

Makes sense to poll this as they are kind of famous for often having great opening tracks. Even after their original heyday.

Basing the poll on their UK albums only.

My vote to "Sympathy For The Devil" even though "Brown Sugar" and "Start Me Up" are more typical Stones opening tracks.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 23 May 2008 09:00 (seventeen years ago)

OK, one vote for "why don't we sing this song all together"...

If only because it means hey, I'm listening to "Their Satanic Majesties Request"

Mark G, Friday, 23 May 2008 09:04 (seventeen years ago)

OK, one vote for "Yesterday's papers"

If only because it means hey, I'm listening to "Between the buttons".

Always was and always will be my favourite Stones LP. Much as I love the classic 68 to 72 period - and I feel bad about not voting for "Rocks off" - there's just something special and different about "BtB" which makes me come back to it all the time. And Brian Jones looks like my old (female) English teacher on the cover too.

Could anything really top "Gimme Shelter" though?

Alex in NYC, Friday, 23 May 2008 11:39 (seventeen years ago)

"She Said Yeah" - wonderfully distorted.

"Rocks Off" = the overture to the soundtrack of my life

Noodle Vague, Friday, 23 May 2008 12:02 (seventeen years ago)

Mr. Noodle is my secret twin - I can still remember the day I first heard that song and went "whoa, fuck"

J0hn D., Friday, 23 May 2008 13:17 (seventeen years ago)

"Gimme Shelter" is my favorite Stones song, so I'll give my vote to "Rocks Off" over "She Said Yeah."

My secret hope is that 20 people vote for "One Hit (To The Body)," which only suffers in this company.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 23 May 2008 13:20 (seventeen years ago)

Rocks Off, although I was tempted to give Rough Justice a token vote.

"Brown Sugar", sets the table perfectly for the mess that's coming.

tough call between shelter & rocks off

I don't think I ever realized that the UK version of Between the Buttons started with Yesterday's Papers rather than Let's Spend The Night Together (which, if it were eligible, would certainly deserve some consideration). And how about Hot Rocks disk 2 opener Jumping Jack Flash?

I guess I vote for Gimme Shelter by a nose over Rocks Off, Sympathy, and Start Me Up, with Brown Sugar, If You Can't Rock Me, and Undercover right behind. Man, they had some great opening tracks, even the ones I don't really like that much.

Miss You, even though Alex in NYC's question about Gimme Shelter is one for the ages.

Miss You
Dance (Pt. 1)
Start Me Up
Undercover Of The Night
One Hit (To The Body)

You've got a pretty great mix tape going there already.

I love the Disco Stones, and I feel no shame.

I was reading down the list thinking "oh, this will be difficult" until I got to ROCKS OFF - that one pretty much takes it. You know, it actually opens twice: once with "I hear you talking..." and then in the middle he gets mesmerized and you have to scream "THE SUNSHINE BORES THE DAYLIGHTS OUT OF ME". It's one big opening, really, leading down a sweet sweet womb..

I wish I could remember what it was like to hear it for the first time, but there will be the 10000000000th time to look forward to, certainly, and that'll be pretty good.

fritz, Friday, 23 May 2008 15:15 (seventeen years ago)

hay guise I like "Rocks Off" too but "Gimme Shelter" owns this.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Friday, 30 May 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

"Gimme Shelter" might be the better song, but "Rocks Off" is the best opening track.

I mean, Exile is one of the few double albums that I can listen straight through on a regular basis and the primary reason is because "Rocks Off" does such a good job at getting you up for a 65 minute trip.

Wrong winner. The rest of the Top 4 is just right, but "Start Me Up" ought to have been the fourth one.
