Bohannon!

scott seward, Saturday, 24 May 2008 21:00 (seventeen years ago)

Only have one Bo album and it's OK; not as good as any Neu!

libcrypt, Saturday, 24 May 2008 21:07 (seventeen years ago)

i love neu! but damn, bohannon just keeps on giving with every new thing i find.

andrew m., Saturday, 24 May 2008 21:35 (seventeen years ago)

Neu!hannon. Too close to call.

inhibitionist, Saturday, 24 May 2008 22:40 (seventeen years ago)

Bohannon! By a million miles! Though Neu are still okay!

xhuxk, Saturday, 24 May 2008 22:45 (seventeen years ago)

i actually took the easier route with this poll cuz sometimes when i listen to bohannon i think of can but i don't know if i would want to choose between can and bohannon cuz i do love can so. so, basically, i am a wimp cuz even though i think neu are way okay too hamilton's trance beats will win everytime for me over neu's admittedly awesome superhighway rhythms.

I have one Bohannon album -- I don't remember what it's called, but my favorite jam from it is "Happiness", and I think the rest of it is mostly instrumental -- and I loooove it, but NEU! '75 is probably my most listened to album ever, so it wouldn't be fair if i didn't give it to them.

AllMusic says Bohannon played in RAMP, but he's not credited on Come Into Knowledge (at least on the website and i don't have the jacket handy) -- is he on there? that might bump it in his favor, since it's a total masterpiece.

people explosion, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 23:39 (seventeen years ago)

i always thought of bohannon as a tighter CAN but they really are closer to neu! now that i think about it...

strgn, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 23:46 (seventeen years ago)

Bohannon hannon. Bohannon.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Thursday, 31 July 2008 00:02 (seventeen years ago)

Bohannon's drumsticks are WAY bigger than Klaus Dinger's (R.I.P.) drumsticks.

in purchasing Gittin' Off the other day, i was chuffed to see a stamp on the front cover that inexplicably reads: "Thanks - Beta."

beta blog, Thursday, 31 July 2008 00:13 (seventeen years ago)

glad i voted bohannon as i started that other thread.

i'd say any 70s albums are amazing and as you get into the 80s, they're not bad, just not as good. Stop/Go is his masterpiece, but in all my years collecting records, i've never seen an original copy out there. it has both his extremely hard, trancey, disco rhythms (where talking heads stole their schtick - called out on Genius Of Love) and a side of slow amazing, hip hop sampled track. luckily there are reissues.

jaxon, Thursday, 31 July 2008 02:14 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, def check out stop & go

IK,R? is wise, but Harmonia > all, and if anyone sounds even slightly like Deluxe combined with Stop/Go let me know, cz you've found my new favourite band.

a passing spacecadet, Thursday, 31 July 2008 11:21 (seventeen years ago)

may not affect the voting here, but i've just leonardo'd a few current bohannon faves/discoveries.

also, if y'all ever run across the on my way record, grab! the A1-2 punch of "come dance with me" and "maybe you can dance" is total awesomeness.

andrew m., Thursday, 31 July 2008 15:33 (seventeen years ago)

I love Neu but I gotta say Bohannon by a mile. If only because of the depth+quality of his/their catalog. I've got six or so of the albums from the 70's and every one has at least two stormers on it.

It's chalk and cheese though isn't it? I think a Bohannon vs DJ Pierre poll would be less of a category mistake.

I'm new to Bohannon, but I still know he/they're better than Neu!

three years pass...

Wow, amazing to see Bohannon got his due!

Soundslike, Sunday, 24 June 2012 13:00 (thirteen years ago)

I had only a vague memory of his name from 70's compilations. Just checked out his Stop & Go album and it is really excellent shit. Not really sure its fair polling him against Neu, but it can only be a good thing if it leads to people discovering really amazing music like this.

Dammit. RIP HB. He never gets anything like enough credit - let's have a box set! I think he recorded like 8 albums in a row without playing a single drum roll, that's discipline and dedication to your craft!

The Corbynite Maneuver (Tom D.), Saturday, 25 April 2020 18:14 (five years ago)

Damn man, too much.

First song played at my wedding party was "I Found My Love on a Saturday" (which I had).

Soundslike, Saturday, 25 April 2020 18:33 (five years ago)

It's a fucking travesty that basically all of his music is out of print (and has been for decades). Four or five albums were put on CD (in Japan I think) through the 2000s, and bought all those, but never anything comprehensive at all. The man deserves fully-remastered ultra-deluxe box set that weighs 20 pounds.

inveterate practitioner of antisocial distancing (Hunt3r), Sunday, 26 April 2020 12:32 (five years ago)

Stop & Go is great mixed r&b/soul-ish fucking hyper classic to me, and it's what I remember listening to as 80s kid. I just made a Greatest Hits collect one from his later stuff, but it's mostly way less disco proper than proto-hi nrg dance music. just all 4/4 cokey party euphoria. as floor filler, this shit is fucking awesome to me. less swanning around, just the floor pounding.

Disco Stomp
Run It On Down Mr. D.J
Footstompin' Music
Andrea
Bohannon's Beat
Groove Machine
Come Dance With Me
Let's Start The Dance
Party people
Zulu
Dance Your Ass Off !
I Got To Stay Funky (Short Version)
Coming On Strong (Caroline Crawford)
Riding On Your Love (Caroline Crawford)

i had never heard of bohannon called "hi nrg," so i googled that and found this:

https://www.electronicbeats.net/rewind-steve-fabus/

and that made sense to me. So Greatest Hits is not like S&G, but I do see more why comparisons like this poll work.

inveterate practitioner of antisocial distancing (Hunt3r), Monday, 27 April 2020 14:05 (five years ago)

i found a copy of this comp:

https://www.discogs.com/Hamilton-Bohannon-Essential-Dancefloor-Artists-Volume-4/release/235835

it seems pretty well put together to me. the problem with a lot of bohannon comps is that they include the short edits of the songs, which is really missing the point imo!

that electronic beats column is great, i will have to explore it more... these non-obvious picks by people who really know their stuff is just the kind of thing i crave
