Pre-/Proto-Swing: A Primer?

Help me with the fundamentals of the eras of jazz/pop that formed the musical and cultural context for swing, but aren't generally considered "swing" proper.

I think Armstrong is generally considered the first swing artist- the Hot Fives and Hot Sevens tracks are where you hear that develop. Sidney Bechet and Jelly Roll Morton are also wonderful New Orleans artists where you can hear the transition from "trad" to swing. Eddie Lang and Bix's sides with the Paul Whiteman Orchestra are a good way to hear white jazzmen integrating their playing with a pop sound.
