Zep must have been the first, right? When was the last time it was feasible? Or does it still happen? Did all the gear go in the jet, too? The light show? Were there "conjugal visit" rooms/dividers?
I remember sitting with my grandma in front of the TV in the late 70s, and the local Boston PM Magazine did a feature on the band Boston, and it showed them getting on their jet, with their spaceship guitar logo painted below the cockpit like a B-17. And this was during the OPEC oil crisis. I assume an act like Boston didn't actually own the jet, just chartered it for a year or so. Still, margins were huge back then.

Don't really know if it's true but I seem to remember reading that during their maximum fame Journey had a 727 to take the band from gig to gig...and that Steve Perry had his own 727 which tended to his modest needs.

Zep rented Elvis' jet.

I guess bands had private jets for the same reason they have sleeper buses - you don`t have to book gigs in a logical geographical order (esp. in the USA), and you save on hotels / plane tickets etc (this stuff adds up). And I guess they could show off too.

Nothing says 'outlaw' like your own private jet.

Led Zeppelin flew jets so they could stay in one city for a week.
Like, on the west coast parts of their US tours, they'd fly back to Los Angeles each night after playing in Phoenix or San Diego or wherever.

Is this right? I thought the story was that when they met Elvis, they told him they had hired a jet and he said "My cock is bigger than yours" "I own one". I didn't realise he was trying to sell them something.
