Which of these upcoming shows in Austin TX are *really* worth my time/money?

You know how it goes: I only have so much discretionary income, and I'm willing to shell out for maybe half of these shows (and that might be a stretch). I haven't seen any of these guys live (except Boris, who I caught a few songs by last year, fantastic). So, ILM, tell me what's absolutely *NOT* to miss, taking price and/or value per dollar into account if you wish:

6/3 Swervedriver - $15
6/20 Times New Viking - $8
6/22 Tom Waits - $85
6/26 the Kadane brothers (of Bedhead & The New Year) - $8
6/28 Boris - $12
7/1 No Age - $8
7/11 Peter Murphy - $15
7/21 Dizzee Rascal - $15
7/25 Aesop Rock - $18
9/6 Mudhoney & Om - $15
9/12 Jana Hunter - $8
9/24 Stereolab - $20

mudhoney and Om

Mackro Mackro, Friday, 30 May 2008 18:41 (seventeen years ago)

Kadane Bros 4 me, for sentimental reasons...

wanko ergo sum, Friday, 30 May 2008 18:55 (seventeen years ago)

...anyone else? advice?

stephen, Saturday, 31 May 2008 04:36 (seventeen years ago)

Boris! If that's the same show I'm going to, then they're with Torche and I'd pay twice as much to see either of those bands by themselves. Tom Waits is great but that price is ridiculous. Mudhoney and Om (I love Om, but I bet Mudhoney still brings it live) is another good deal.

filthy dylan, Saturday, 31 May 2008 06:07 (seventeen years ago)

i intend to attend boris + mudhoney & om

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 31 May 2008 06:11 (seventeen years ago)

Tom Waits, Stereolab, Kadane, in that order

matinee, Saturday, 31 May 2008 06:28 (seventeen years ago)

i mean, $85 is a LOT of money for a show (probably the most i'll have spent, if i go) -- but Tom Waits hasn't been to Texas since 1982, and at that rate (a 26 year gap) i doubt he'll be back again before he's dead or retired.

stephen, Saturday, 31 May 2008 08:39 (seventeen years ago)

Hoos is right, I would be interested in checking out No Age as well to see if the hype is worth it.

S-, Saturday, 31 May 2008 11:14 (seventeen years ago)

SWERVEDRIVER

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Saturday, 31 May 2008 11:23 (seventeen years ago)

Jay Reatard is playing a free show at the beginning of August, I think. That's about the only Austin show that's on my radar. I'm a cheap old bastard.

Romeo Jones, Saturday, 31 May 2008 17:24 (seventeen years ago)

i'm not big on jay reatard :(

stephen, Saturday, 31 May 2008 17:26 (seventeen years ago)

I would go to one or all of these.

8/22 Superpages.com Amphitheatre, Dallas, TX
8/23 Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, Houston, TX
8/24 Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre, San Antonio, TX

METAL MASTERS TOUR w/Judas Priest, Heaven & Hell, Motorhead, Testament

Nate Carson, Monday, 2 June 2008 08:45 (seventeen years ago)

Boris - yes.
Mudhoney and Om - yes.
No Age - the price is certainly right.

Now, a word about Swervedriver. Your results may vary, but I would not miss that show for the world. I saw them in about 93, 94, right after Mezcal Head came out, and they were *incredible*. Not only one of the loudest shows I've ever been to, but one of the biggest -- not in physical space, if you see what I mean. A mountain of sound. Better live than Ride, or My Bloody Valentine, better than most anything I've ever seen. I still have the t-shirt. :)

kenan -- nice! i was def. going to see swervedriver tomorrow night, your post sealed it for me. bought my ticket, will report back soon!

stephen, Monday, 2 June 2008 23:05 (seventeen years ago)

so how was swervedriver? :)

kenan, Monday, 9 June 2008 07:14 (seventeen years ago)

Swervedriver was very, very loud. I was somewhat drunk. I enjoyed it, wouldn't say it was mindblowing though. Something about it being a reunion show? I dunno. Pretty good show, though. Played most of the singles and album tracks I expected 'em to play.

I just bought tix for Tom Waits(!!), Boris, Peter Murphy, Mudhoney/OM and still thinking about the rest. That's a nice little handful of shows though, and Mr. Waits certainly drained my bank account a good bit.

stephen, Thursday, 12 June 2008 20:58 (seventeen years ago)

Also recently announced for Austin: Mogwai (who are much, much better live than on record these days) with Fuck Buttons. I'll be going to that one more than likely.

stephen, Thursday, 12 June 2008 20:59 (seventeen years ago)

Mogwai (who are much, much better live louder than on record)

Boris, Waits, Mudhoney and Swervedriver if you still have money.
The Metal Masters Tour goes without saying. Maiden as well if they'll be near.

Oxford Collapse is playing a free show on June 26th @ Mohawk

i believe that the Kadane Brothers show on the same day is with new p4k favs Crystal Antlers (if that's your kind of thing)

No Age's live act isn't mind-blowing, but they are very entertaining; if you get a good crowd it could definitely turn out to be worth the $8

saw Dizzee at SXSW--one of my very favorite shows

Stereolab may have had the best sound quality I've ever heard, but when I saw them they were playing way too much new stuff and overall just kind of lulled the crowd

Jana Hunter's great! I don't think I'd heard her before when she opened for Deerhoof at Emos a few years ago -- a nice surprise.

for my post-SXSW visit I have spotlit the following, very tentatively:

3/27 - Tribute Band Marathon with The Orgasm Addicts, Big Mess, Barracuda, A Joy Division Cover Band, The Black Squeeze, The Costellophones, The Lowelies at Emo's [outside]

3/28 - Masshysteri, The Strange Boys, The Hex Dispensers at Beerland

3/30 - Rock and Roll Karaoke at Beerland

likely nothing I have to buy adv tix for? I'm not likely to go to shows all 4 nights, I'd have gone to sxsw if I wanted to be that tired.

Dank and sweaty, poor sightlines to the outdoor stage, poor lighting, dull beer selection, and most importantly, sound guys that in my experience, don't really give a fuck how a show sounds, or else don't know how to get good acoustics in a live venue.
