― CaptainLorax, Sunday, 1 June 2008 19:03 (sixteen years ago)
don't know many, kinda feelin' "rebound".
― jeremy waters, Sunday, 1 June 2008 19:18 (sixteen years ago)
I don't know too much but I was listening to Lou Barlow and His Sentridoh album during a long drive and I liked that stuff more than the Sebadoh I've heard. None of the songs stood out, but they all sounded good together, I guess. They fit well in the alternative rock/ art folk albums / bit experimental category I had a thread for a while back.
― CaptainLorax, Sunday, 1 June 2008 19:28 (sixteen years ago)
way too many to choose.
― Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 1 June 2008 19:30 (sixteen years ago)

― jonathan - stl, Sunday, 1 June 2008 22:23 (sixteen years ago)
the freed weed has his best songs. i was referring to acoustic brand new love, not the electric version on sebadoh vs helmet
― cutty, Sunday, 1 June 2008 22:24 (sixteen years ago)
Punch in the Nose/Magnet's Coil/Not a Friend/Beauty of the Ride/Willing to Wait/Too Pure/Flame
Not a Barlow expert by any means, have never heard any non-Sebadoh stuff, and only really the latter half of their oeuvre. Harmacy probably my fave album. I guess I tend to like the slower, more miserablist stuff (quelle surprise), would be good to get some suggestions for other stuff to check out. Are the Folk Implosion worthwhile?

"Too Pure" off Harmacy ... haven't heard much else but that is one fine tune.

i've been posting here for a while. so you're obviously only reading threads on music that sucks.
― stephen, Friday, 11 July 2008 23:50 (sixteen years ago)
I think "Willing to Wait" from Harmacy is good enough to be a standard, but the production on that record kind of sinks it-- the solo acoustic version on the Morning Becomes Eclectic comp is great. You know what I love on the Kids Soundtrack is that "Raise the Bells" instrumental! (guess it's originally from a Folk Implosion record). I honestly think that is as good an interlude of that sort as anything Boards of Canada ever came up with.
― Mark Rich@rdson, Saturday, 12 July 2008 00:23 (sixteen years ago)
Also "Ocean" from Harmacy is great. Lou has a lot of insight into relationships. Like, all of "Rebound":
"Beware," they say But why would I listen I want to know what I've been missing
That's a very tight synopsis of why it's almost impossible to reason with someone you care about who is heading into a bad relationship. You have to let go and let them fuck up and hope they survive it. It's an awful feeling and that song captures it rather well.
― Mark Rich@rdson, Saturday, 12 July 2008 00:30 (sixteen years ago)
lou's songs, sadly, make me think of him on 'sex in the '90s.'

i happened to dig up the cover of 'riding' yesterday and was thinking how lou chose some amazing songs to cover, and generally did a p decent job even tho they are the kind of songs where covers are always going to struggle badly against the originals: riding + pink moon + everybody's been burned + blonde in the bleachers + erm, run to you
― Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 20 April 2011 17:09 (fourteen years ago)
MInutemen ("sickles and hammers") and The Necros ("reject") as well...

Re: Lou Barlow on Albini, Pavement and 90s sound
Postby Sowley on Thu Jun 30, 2011 11:39 amI find a certain amount of frustration that I can't find the clip from MTV's "Sex In The '90s" of Lou Barlow sitting in a dark room queening out about his lady cheating on him.

dunno dunno. tempted to take superchunk's "100000 fireflies" over the magnetic fields, in an instant their "lying in state" over the verlaines, but damn, would die for either sebadoh run through "brand new love". they did well with that, revisiting the old shit once they got ahold of tools, the version of "spoiled" on the kids soundtrack at least matches the original. but w all due respect:

I just downloaded the d.f.i. EP and there's a second version of Daddy Never Understood with a different guy singing, and I would guess that's Bob Fay.. Barlow might not have written the song, but he is def singing on the Kids version.
