Not everyone knows of the Residents.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 04:03 (sixteen years ago)

very tough call for me - this is some of my favorite stuff. eventually comes down to "constantinople" vs. "birthday boy" vs. "elvis and his boss," all (and this strikes me as funny, and maybe says something about how the Residents' music "works," at least for me) for personal reasons. "Elvis and his boss" wins but it was a coin toss.

J0hn D., Tuesday, 3 June 2008 04:17 (sixteen years ago)

hello skinny

am0n, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 04:18 (sixteen years ago)

I've got this but never listen to it because it's on a single and I don't get around to listening to those much. The only two I can actually remember are "Constantinople" and "Hello Skinny". The Residents album I play regularly is the almost vocal-less Intermission. I mean a lot of the Residents music is almost like left-field easy listening but there's only so much weird chanting/oily sneering that guests can take.

Okay, I guess the reason I don't remember a lot of these at all is that I only have the Duck Stab part. Anyway, here's the Hello Skinny vid

"Not everyone knows of the Residents."

I hope thay have some pretty remarkable excuses....

Stewart Osborne, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 09:03 (sixteen years ago)

"Blue Rosebuds" this morning. My second favorite Residents album after Eskimo.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 11:32 (sixteen years ago)

This is one of my favorite albums. There's some terrifying stuff on here - like even though "The Booker Tease" is an instrumental, there's something unsettling about it.

"Your heart is like a silken sponge that calls saliva 'love'"

kingkongvsgodzilla, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 16:37 (sixteen years ago)

Lots of subtle things, like on "The Laughing Song," the way the verses are sung with such relish. "In place of his face was a scholar." And then he's smirking or cracking up or something.

Maltodextrin, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 16:47 (sixteen years ago)

"constantinople" is my jam.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 17:01 (sixteen years ago)

Remember when Primus played "Hello Skinny" in the middle of their set at Woodstock 94?

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 17:02 (sixteen years ago)

Almost better at room-clearing than a canister of tear gas. So many it's hard to choose.

Gorge, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 17:45 (sixteen years ago)

I was a junior in high school when I bought 'Commercial Album' and liked it so went ahead and bought this, and getting to the guitar solo in 'The Electrocutioner' was a turning point for me, I'm always going to remember that moment -- I felt sick and horrified, I remember wondering if I wanted to be the kind of person who even owned this record, the reaction was so strong, but in hindsight it was like I was being innoculated, and the wave of nausea faded with the guitars into the funeral march and the band had completely gained my trust

Milton Parker, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 18:12 (sixteen years ago)

Everything on this is great, of course, but best two songs are "Blue Rosebuds" and "The Electrocutioner"

Tom D., Wednesday, 4 June 2008 08:42 (sixteen years ago)

It's a damn tough choice. "Constantinople" is the one I find gallivanting around in my head on a frequent basis, between the dinking along with the vocals and the fantastic swirly riff, it's really hard to think of anything more memorable. The progger in me clearly says 'The Electrocutioner' is the ticket. Devil Doll need to cover that shit post haste.
But ugh, then there's Blue Rosebuds. The part where he goes into falsetto always kills me. And really... PHWEET FLU-EROO-THUH PHWEET FLU-EROO-THUH PHWEET FLU-EROO-THUH Bakkisdead!
Goddammit, I think I'll listen to this when I get home. I have no idea what to go for.

I think "Birthday Boy" was the first Residents song I heard that made me want to listen to the Residents all day long. Creaming eyes explode upon an apple pirate toad!

PHWEET FLU-EROO-THUH PHWEET FLU-EROO-THUH PHWEET FLU-EROO-THUH Bakkisdead!

Ha ha, classic. See also bit where the horns come in at the end of "Semolina".

"Bye," the bothered birthday boy said,
"Bye," the bothered birthday boy said,
"Bye or sell or bye,
Bye or sell or bye."

Skinny sold a soldier to me
Skinny sold a wife
Skinny sold a suction cup
And a knife
Skinny found a Hello Dolly
record in the hall
He sold it to a truck driver
in the fall

This thread is making me SO SAD my computer speakers broke.

Abbott, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 22:26 (sixteen years ago)

Every note on this record is so utterly, wonderfully RONG.

ILX System, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 23:01 (sixteen years ago)

Can't really argue with results, 'cept lately I've found myself singing the "Laughing Song" lots to myself (not out loud obviously!)

"An oily ole egg with a red peg leg
Thought a porcupine was his daughter..."

Two votes for "Weightlifting Lulu"!

Tom D., Thursday, 12 June 2008 09:06 (sixteen years ago)

wtf forgot to vote
my shame's a gaudy goat

Øystein, Thursday, 12 June 2008 09:23 (sixteen years ago)

seven years pass...

Would have voted "Blue Rosebuds" but "Lizard Lady" robbed here! That little, err, monologue is the creepiest fucking thing ever. I also thought "Semolina" would get more votes.

What a great album this is
