The new Q Radio will be unafraid to play eclectic combinations of artists, such as Futureheads, Gang of Four, Hot Chip and Human League in the same swoop of music

This article, man. This fucking article.

Dom Passantino, Monday, 2 June 2008 09:00 (seventeen years ago)

You can decide for yourself what's worst about it, whether it's the "Look, we know a chick who's totally coloured" routine, the mewling stage school The Chap-reading fucks who are apparently "one of London's most fashionable acts" because their PR chums gave them a few club nights nobody actually dances at, or just the fact that Q somehow still exists in 2008.

Dom Passantino, Monday, 2 June 2008 09:01 (seventeen years ago)

Like, I ain't the type of dude to say "NME MUST DIE", because that shit serves a function. Q Magazine, on the other hand, just gives us this. Makes me nostalgic for the days of real DJs like George Lamb and Zane Lowe.

Dom Passantino, Monday, 2 June 2008 09:02 (seventeen years ago)

You know, the Mojo radio shold have loads of interesting or obscure stuff, to reflect the articles

So why, whenever I tune in, it's playing "Moving Out" by Billy Joel, or some such?

I expect nothing of Q radio, so even the list of FutGOFHchipHLeeg would be better than now. But still, I expect nothing.

Mark G, Monday, 2 June 2008 09:08 (seventeen years ago)

Blaxill identifies Radio 2, Xfm and parts of the Virgin Radio output as the closest equivalents to the Q Radio offering

Well, delete Xfm and that's pretty close to how it is.

"If you were looking at Q you might expect the show to be presented by a 40-year-old white man with a beard and a passion for guitars," says Ric Blaxill, when talking about the flagship programme of Q Radio, which launches today with a full schedule of presenters.

It's not even *that* good.

Mark G, Monday, 2 June 2008 09:10 (seventeen years ago)

Dom have you only just realised that Q is not exactly at the vanguard of forward-looking music journalism?

Matt DC, Monday, 2 June 2008 09:11 (seventeen years ago)

I'd take Whispering Bob over anyone who has a show on national radio right now. Except Mistajam, and even he sucks now he has to do a cross-genre show rather than just hip-hop.

xp

Dom Passantino, Monday, 2 June 2008 09:11 (seventeen years ago)

Matt, I don't mind that! I mind them parading out three chicks, two of whom look like Rocky Horror fans post-Gok Wan, and somehow declaring themselves to be the future of music radio.

Dom Passantino, Monday, 2 June 2008 09:12 (seventeen years ago)

Because they're playing Nick Drake

Dom Passantino, Monday, 2 June 2008 09:12 (seventeen years ago)

Nick Drake off of the Heartbeat soundtrack

Dom Passantino, Monday, 2 June 2008 09:13 (seventeen years ago)

I can sense Geir's approach...

Mark G, Monday, 2 June 2008 09:13 (seventeen years ago)

British Asian arts and entertainment. "She's in her mid-20s and is absolutely consumed by music and film. It would have been easier for us to secure that 40-year-old white guy, but it's required more depth and thought to bring Samanthi on board," says Blaxill.

yeah this is definitely the worst part

J0rdan S., Monday, 2 June 2008 09:14 (seventeen years ago)

"I'm great" he added...

Mark G, Monday, 2 June 2008 09:16 (seventeen years ago)

So, let's see.

Young girl in her twenties.

Not going to appeal to the average Q reader, oh no no no nooo.....

Mark G, Monday, 2 June 2008 09:17 (seventeen years ago)

Interesting? Click here to explore further

J0rdan S., Monday, 2 June 2008 09:17 (seventeen years ago)

Unlike Xfm, Blaxill believes, Q Radio would happily play Nick Drake.

Is this true? (re Nick Drake)

But mainly, how much 'daring' and 'foresightedness' and 'depth of thought' was it to get..

Former Xfm presenter Samanthi

Mark G, Monday, 2 June 2008 09:19 (seventeen years ago)

described by this newspaper as "A Hollywood musical on hallucinogenics".

That's pretty bad, actually patting themselves on the back for using the "... on acid!!1!11!!" line.

ledge, Monday, 2 June 2008 09:20 (seventeen years ago)

I mind them parading out three chicks, two of whom look like Rocky Horror fans post-Gok Wan, and somehow declaring themselves to be the future of music radio.

Haha fair enough. I don't really mind them doing that because, hey, that's how marketing departments work, but this is very confused branding. I'm assuming Q magazine can get away with being as blokey as it wants because it's comfortably the market leader but suddenly launching a radio station and going "hey it's for girls too!" doesn't really work.

Matt DC, Monday, 2 June 2008 09:20 (seventeen years ago)

Who cares about the presenters, it's down to the playlist right?

I mean, lovely that they play the occasional NDrake track, well done. But if it's just wall to wall 'the ususal' otherwise, um, so?

Mark G, Monday, 2 June 2008 09:24 (seventeen years ago)

Who writes for Q nowadays anyway? Still Moomin Harris and that mob?

Dom Passantino, Monday, 2 June 2008 09:24 (seventeen years ago)

I should pack here, as Digital radio is a logistical non-starter for me as I play radio in-car if ever.

If it was 'fantastic', I might be tempted to record some for later replay. But I doubt it.

Mark G, Monday, 2 June 2008 09:25 (seventeen years ago)

"Q has become more and more a music magazine...
Huh? What did it used to be?

Colonel Poo, Monday, 2 June 2008 09:30 (seventeen years ago)

"eclectic"

I'm currently drawing up a business plan for Radio ILM.

Dingbod Kesterson, Monday, 2 June 2008 09:32 (seventeen years ago)

"If you were looking at Q you might expect the show to be presented by a 40-year-old white man with a beard and a passion for guitars,

actually Q makes me think of oily middle-aged middle-managers with no real passion for anything

braveclub, Monday, 2 June 2008 09:36 (seventeen years ago)

Strangely my radio woke me up with Q Radio this morning, and for a while it wasn't all that bad: something would-be rousing by Elbow about throwing open curtains, Young Knives, the new PRML SCRM, the new Weller... None of these were actually great, but I was sort-of curious to hear them. But then they played Scouting for Girls and drove me into the arms of Radio 3.

HOOS, deej, Jordan S and The Reverend already pre-packed and ready to go as a morning show posse.

Dom Passantino, Monday, 2 June 2008 09:37 (seventeen years ago)

The problem is that between them Virgin, Xfm and Radio 6 already do exactly what Q Radio would naturally do so they'll need the radio version of Polly Toynbee's microscope to establish any sort of worthwhile USP.

Matt DC, Monday, 2 June 2008 11:28 (seventeen years ago)

A moratorium on the word "eclectic" to describe one's music taste is something I have long desired.

Just got offed, Monday, 2 June 2008 11:34 (seventeen years ago)

I'm currently drawing up a business plan for Radio ILM.

this is actually by no means a dreadful idea...

How does one verbalize "lololol"

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 2 June 2008 12:11 (seventeen years ago)

Ref: Justin Lee Collins' 'clown' documentary.

That was his 'catchphrase'...

Mark G, Monday, 2 June 2008 13:40 (seventeen years ago)

first the re-launching of Q radio, now the NME announce their plans for radio:

NME
http://www.nme.com/news/nme-radio/36989

The DJ line-up for NME Radio, launching on Sky channel 0184, Virgin Media channel 975 and NME.COM/radio on June 24, has been announced.

the good newss: Nick Luscombe is coming back ! after the corporate-indie-guitar-rockist-mafia at xfm axed his show !

djmartian, Monday, 2 June 2008 15:10 (seventeen years ago)

I do miss Flomotion of a Sunday evening.

How convenient, however, that NME Radio should hire a DJ named Chris Martin.

Dingbod Kesterson, Monday, 2 June 2008 15:12 (seventeen years ago)

What exciting new music can we expect to hear on NME Radio?

I predict the following:
Van Halen
Fleet Foxes
Laura Marling
Elbow
Pete Molinari
Guillemots
Elbow again
Zutons
Pendulum
Duffy

Dingbod Kesterson, Monday, 2 June 2008 15:15 (seventeen years ago)

the godawful ting tings.
Who are Pendulum anyway?

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 2 June 2008 18:39 (seventeen years ago)

pendulum are to drum n bass what justice are to house music

Crackle Box, Monday, 2 June 2008 19:03 (seventeen years ago)

pendulum are the absolute pits. I used to hear them on zane lowe.

Pashmina, Monday, 2 June 2008 20:09 (seventeen years ago)

The Broken Hearts are one of London's most fashionable DJ acts – described by this newspaper as "A Hollywood musical on hallucinogenics".

LOLOL @ "this newspaper" + cultural ignorance because there was never anything remotely hallucinogenic about hollywood musicals, oh no not at all.

Pashmina, Monday, 2 June 2008 20:20 (seventeen years ago)

guy who was head of music at CUR professes his love of drum and bass. generally this profession will come along the lines of "pendulum - aren't they just the most awesome band?! when that beat comes in...sooo good!"

he also professes a love of "heavy rock", such as INME, Reuben, yourcodenameis: milo, Biffy Clyro and numerous other slayers of the senses.

he is going into radio as a career. being head of music the year CUR won "best station" and being nominated for a personal award kinda ensures this fact.

he tries to mean well but when your music taste extends to describing laura marling as the next great singer-songwriter...

2008 Battle of the UK mainstream rock stations - commercial sector:

Mojo Radio - does anybody listen to the station?

NME radio - to be launched at the end of month (see above for launch info)

Q Radio - Ric Blaxill who left 6 Music relaunches Q Radio - likely to pander to Q readers, 20somethings with fairly mainstream music interests i.e those that goto the V festival

Xfm London - struggling radio station that follows the NME and Pluggers agenda, narrow conformist playlist aimed at NME reading teenagers and students

Virgin Radio - just bought by the parent company of Times of India will be run by a new management team at Absolute Radio - who presently run Oxford's Jack FM - 15 million will be spent on rebranding the station

djmartian, Monday, 2 June 2008 21:17 (seventeen years ago)

20somethings with fairly mainstream music interests

You mean, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, 50 Cent and Christina Aguilera?

Geir Hongro, Monday, 2 June 2008 23:57 (seventeen years ago)

I mean, those are way more mainstream than indie will ever possibly get.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 2 June 2008 23:57 (seventeen years ago)

Big fucking posters of Alex Zane for Xfm greeting me in the tube this morning, guaranteeing a bad start to the day.

Raw Patrick, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 08:24 (seventeen years ago)

xpost to Geir, yes I believe that's probably the playlist. (no sarc)

Mark G, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 08:29 (seventeen years ago)

Timberlake and Aguilera yeah, Britney and Fiddy no.

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 09:06 (seventeen years ago)

so there you go.

Mark G, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 09:11 (seventeen years ago)

According to xfm DJ Eddy Temple-Morris, we "need" Pendulum.

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 11:23 (seventeen years ago)

I think we need a return to real bands like Breakbeat Era and Day One.

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 11:26 (seventeen years ago)

That would be Pendulum's official tour DJ Eddy Temple-Morris, would it?

mike t-diva, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 12:49 (seventeen years ago)

his very name gives me shivers of recognition

Just got offed, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 12:51 (seventeen years ago)

I remember Eddy temple morris getting crazy excited about Pendulum's first release.

so whenever I see a poster of them, i think of him and think "its his fault".

Hamildan, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 13:31 (seventeen years ago)

ILM radio.

can I be the first to suggest a documentary series about lesser known acts lauded on ILM.

its title would be "why?..because they interesting."

Hamildan, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 13:34 (seventeen years ago)

intersting.

But who would these be? Mia? Annie? um... Gay dad?

Mark G, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 13:35 (seventeen years ago)

Sunday afternoon schedule already sewn up - me and the missus to do Punctum Of The Pops followed by Swygart's Top 40 show and then at seven Geir Hongro's When Music Was Music.

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 14:35 (seventeen years ago)

Daytime programming will be run by poptimists - they will simply tune the station to Radio 1.

byebyepride, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 15:51 (seventeen years ago)

No scab DJs, no Brit School shit, no terrorism-inducing jingles every two seconds.

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 15:54 (seventeen years ago)

i'm on air! see the other thread i'm bumping like a busy bee

Just got offed, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 19:08 (seventeen years ago)
