Who Hates What More ... American ILMers and Nu-Metal; or British ILMers and Britpop?!?

We all know the score -- the Britishes here all foam at the mouth in rage over stuff like Ocean Colour Scene, Dodgy, Space, Cast, et. al., and Americans scratch their heads wondering why all the hate (b/c many of those acts never really made it over here and when they did there was FAR WORSE on our airwaves). And many of us Yanks would rather have molten lava poured slowly onto our genitals than ever have to listen to the likes of Limp Bizkit, Papa Roach, Slipknot, etc. again.

But, who hates what more?!?

No one can answer this unbiasedly. Can they?

our work is never over, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 01:51 (seventeen years ago)

I'll go with Nu-Metal though, for no real reason.

our work is never over, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 01:51 (seventeen years ago)

The Brits never seem to tire of arguing over Britpop, whereas I got tired of defending Deftones long ago.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 01:58 (seventeen years ago)

ie the Brits self-loath their own pop way more than I give a flying fuck about Papa Roach

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 02:01 (seventeen years ago)

I had to defend the merits of nu-metal for a feature for Metal Edge, but man, listening to those old albums again made me remember just how much they sucked. But I'm over it, whereas the Brits don't seem to be over Britpop, so I'll go with that one.

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 02:05 (seventeen years ago)

defending the deftones is ALWAYS good, partly b/c they actually ARE good and partly b/c they became the "nu-metal band that it's OK to like" the way that, e.g., motley crue is "the hair-metal bank that it's OK to like."

also, at least nu-metal never really wrapped itself in the american flag and tried to pass itself off as "quintessentially american" or some other shit like that the way that some wrapped britpop in the union jack!

Eisbaer, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 02:06 (seventeen years ago)

quit frontin Hoos u know u luv it

J0hn D., Tuesday, 3 June 2008 02:07 (seventeen years ago)

Oh my God, that is amazing.

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 02:15 (seventeen years ago)

It's like God came down from heaven and endowed us with the most perfect music video ever made.

indeed -- i miss how he would full-throatedly defend limp bizkit and fred durst from all comers ;_; ;_;

Eisbaer, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 02:29 (seventeen years ago)

I would trust all my money to a hair metal bank

DJ Mencap, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 08:52 (seventeen years ago)

I don't understand why anyone could hate Britpop, while I understand very well why anyone hates Nu Metal.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 08:53 (seventeen years ago)

are we talking about the mean amount of loathing per inhabitant, or total amount of hatred in the entire nation? cos USA is clearly at an advantage if it's the latter

braveclub, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 08:56 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I wish it was the other way round. Britpop arguments would be so much more fun.

Just got offed, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 08:59 (seventeen years ago)

braveclub this is about ILM 'tudes specifically unless you are implying that ILM is in fact a nation state?

DJ Mencap, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 09:03 (seventeen years ago)

Anyway I think Britpop is the answer as no evidence of a LNMZC exists on my radar

DJ Mencap, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 09:04 (seventeen years ago)

hate is perhaps not the right word. 'us brits' like talking about britpop because its like talking about 'button moon' or 'fireman sam'.
we take the piss and lol at it, but we grew up with it and thus its an intrinsic part of our mental furniture.

Frogman Henry, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 10:18 (seventeen years ago)

I was just going to say, there'd be lots of "Britpop sux, except for..." caveat emporio/amorio.

Would that also be so for NuMetal?

Mark G, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 10:25 (seventeen years ago)

No one can answer this unbiasedly. Can they?

I think I can, I'm not American or British, and I don't care for either genre.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 10:27 (seventeen years ago)

And to be honest I've seen more nu-metal than Britpop hate here. Maybe some Americans like Britpop, but I haven't seen too many Britishes defending nu-metal.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 10:29 (seventeen years ago)

I think a lot of us are actually quite fond both of britpop, a little like looking thru old LOL college photos. ie a mix of embarrassment and nostalgia.

Thomas, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 10:40 (seventeen years ago)

Does Nu-Britpop-Metal exist?

but I haven't seen too many Britishes defending nu-metal.

Not here, but NME loved Slipknot for cirka three months in 2001.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 10:49 (seventeen years ago)

I think I can safely say I hated Nu-Metal even more than Britpop.

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 10:54 (seventeen years ago)

I think anyone who isn't a moron or a wretched contrarian can safely say that.

^^^my challoppage?

Just got offed, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 11:03 (seventeen years ago)

Alien Ant Farm's cover of "Smooth Criminal" > any Britpop record ever.

Except maybe "Caught By The Fuzz".

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 11:05 (seventeen years ago)

Americans and Dave Matthews Band hatred would've walked this poll though.
Since Nu-Metal was as popular as Britpop over here(No 1 singles etc) yet no-one has ever heard Dave Matthews Band.

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 11:06 (seventeen years ago)

^^^someone never lived with stoners

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 11:07 (seventeen years ago)

Dom, my band is playing "Caught By The Fuzz" in our May Ball sets. It's got a well groovy bassline.

Just got offed, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 11:08 (seventeen years ago)

OK, so "Smooth Criminal" is better then.

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 11:09 (seventeen years ago)

Well, it is now.

Just got offed, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 11:10 (seventeen years ago)

Eisbaer, you should do a mid to late 90s worst American bands poll. Lets see if Dave Matthews Band, Hootie & The Blowfish, Creed, Linkin park, Limp Bizit,Staind,Papa Roach, Everclear, Sublime etc get 100 votes each :)

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 18:54 (seventeen years ago)

Nationality aside, ILM typically holds the most conspicuous of the Britpop usual suspects (Blur & Pulp especially, and to a lesser extent Suede, Verve, Oasis, Supergrass, Auteurs, etc.) in fairly high regard, whereas the same can definitly not be said of nu-metal. With the possible exception of The Deftones, even the most critically accepted of the lot (Korn, System of a Down, Slipknot, etc.) are generally ignored or dissed in these parts. Not that there's anything wrong with this as far as I'm concerned, I just don't see the basis for any sort of debatable comparision, unless the terms of discussion inlude only the also-rans of either genre.

Pillbox, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 19:23 (seventeen years ago)

korn is critically accepted?!?

Eisbaer, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 19:26 (seventeen years ago)

'BYOB' by System Of A Down is better than 'Girls And Boys' by Blur

DJ Mencap, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 19:27 (seventeen years ago)

xpost - While I'm not professing to be an expert on Korn's critical legacy, I remember them being discussed with a degree of reverence, at least ten years ago or so, not enjoyed by the likes of Limp Bizkit and the more frat-oriented bands.

Pillbox, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 19:29 (seventeen years ago)

I think their professed Cure fetish bought them a few points with some (not me)

Pillbox, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 19:31 (seventeen years ago)

"Girls And Boys" is among my least favourite Blur songs :p

Just got offed, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 19:32 (seventeen years ago)

I could listen the the extended Pet Shop Boys remix of "Girls and Boys" over and over for days. Weeks maybe.

depends if u define britpop as AUTEURS and DENIM lol

banriquit, Monday, 9 June 2008 23:09 (seventeen years ago)

i'm surprised too ... i woulda thought that the deftones love would've been enough to save nu-metal.

Eisbaer, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 00:15 (seventeen years ago)

four years pass...

whereas the Brits don't seem to be over Britpop, so I'll go with that one.

so true.

Was there really far worse on US airwaves generally than whatever Britpop did make it?

crappy post-grunge bands?

Master of Treacle, Friday, 16 November 2012 12:51 (twelve years ago)

The best of these genres were just fine by me. The worst were the worst. I have no inclination to go back and listen to the first couple of Korn albums, but they seemed very exciting at the time. Similarly, I've still got plenty of time for classic Blur and Boo Radleys records, but as a national hype phenomenon with undeserved outliers (Northern Uproar and what not) getting way more attention than they deserved. Blame the media and the PR people, not the bands IMO (apart from Northern Uproar, you can blame them).

don't really blame shit artists for being shit, except when they spout manifestoes about the importance of being shit. don't really blame people for liking shit, except when they go on and on and on about the same shit.
