I actually have a good reason for voting "High And Dry": it's the one I reckon still has the most pernicious influence, especially at open-mic nights. Absolutely sick-making. Radiohead themselves renounced it pretty quickly, thank goodness.

Mr Writer's going to win by an even bigger margin than they did on the bands poll.

I really like about 15-20 of those songs and am baffled as to why some were nominated, and I don't just mean the contrarian choices from LJ.

I think "Mr Writer" is bad enough (bad as in leaden, turgid, dirgey) that maybe, MAYBE people wouldn't.

A lot of these I don't even remember. "Mr Writer" comes a close second, but it has to be "Place Your Hands", simply for being the equivalent of a long drawn out attack of diarrhoea.

Oops, "The Drugs Don't Work" belongs in Wretched – memorably terrible - death preferable to this I think I'd have picked it as worst were it not for "Mr Writer" (for the same reasons - deadly leaden dirge)

I saw Baby Bird before that song came out, they/he were ok. Friend of mine had heard them on John Peel or something, I'd never heard of them.

Mark & Lard used to play Babybird a lot on their 10pm show on R1. They had mail order only eps that sold for shitloads back then.

'Fireworks' is the best thing Embrace have ever made.

I'd rather say the worst. They didn't get good until they slowed down and started coming up with those great anthemic ballads.

No fuckin way is 'Lucky You' better than 'Pure'!

It sure is. On second thought it may not be better than "Joy" or "Perfect" though.

And "Country House" is still one of the greatest songs that have ever been written. Wonderfully happy, happy, happy and anthemic with a great and happy singalong chorus that sticks in your head and stays there. A sign a quality!

"Country House" is a fantastic song for the exact same reason that "Friday I'm In Love", "Mint Car", Wake Up Boo!" and "Find The Answer Within" are fantastic songs.

Country House and Roll With It still make me want to break things after all these years. It's a pity that the britpop war between both was about the 2 worst singles either ever made.

"Roll With It" is great too. Probably one of Oasis' two most Beatlesque song ever (as in early Beatles, as opposed to the 1967-Beatles of "Who Feels Love")

It's easily the worst thing Oasis ever did. Horrid song, was so disappointed when I 1st heard it.

I don't like Stereophonics much, but "Mr. Writer" is one of their better songs. Sure, the lyrics are kind of whiney, but the melody is better than most of what they came up with otherwise.

Britpop was all about the tunes, and the problem about Stereophonics is that the tunes mostly didn't hope up. They were too repetitive and... well.... too R&B, simply.

i do think they had their saggy moments (mostly on the second record) but the first album is pretty strong all the way through, and the third album was much better than expected

also 'a certain sadness' is one of the best b-sides of all time

I only have the best-of. All the stuff off the first album is ace, and after that Can't Tell Me and to a lesser extent The Self Same Thing are super. CTM is a *brilliant* pop-song, up there with Stars, Anywhere, JAGSS, NSMN, possibly better than all four (well, maybe not Anywhere or JAGSS). Would like to hear album tracks, b-sides etc.

i think they're a band who could make a b-sides album that would hold up. the NSMN EP is fantastic from start to finish, and even their last single was great (despite the appearance of ian broudie).

never heard the b-sides of the original stars release but i'd bet they're good

Motiv-8's remix of Stars is one of the greatest things. That dude was remix gold for a few months back then.
