Before anyone complains, It's just songs chosen because they were hits. It doesn't mean I think they're all crap. Most songs were nominated on the other thread so if a songs missing you had your chance then.

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 13:20 (sixteen years ago)

"Drop Dead Gorgeous" is vile, but prob. not vilest here

Tom D., Wednesday, 4 June 2008 13:21 (sixteen years ago)

take that laverne

DG, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 13:21 (sixteen years ago)

Mulder & Scully duly voted for.

Scik Mouthy, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 13:22 (sixteen years ago)

Nominations for best song to be posted over at
Worst Of These Mid-Late 90s UK Bands?

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 13:22 (sixteen years ago)

Well, it's quite obviously "High And Dry".

Just got offed, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 13:23 (sixteen years ago)

Daydreamer is possibly the biggest waste of notes here.

chap, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 13:23 (sixteen years ago)

HOLD UP

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 13:24 (sixteen years ago)

Daydreamer is ace! Way better than half the songs here at least.

Scik Mouthy, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 13:25 (sixteen years ago)

Nobody remembered to nominate Under the Bridge by All Saints!

chap, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 13:25 (sixteen years ago)

"Country House" is terrible, really terrible. But hard to see beyond "Milder and Skilly"... oh, Reef

Tom D., Wednesday, 4 June 2008 13:26 (sixteen years ago)

I actually have a good reason for voting "High And Dry": it's the one I reckon still has the most pernicious influence, especially at open-mic nights. Absolutely sick-making. Radiohead themselves renounced it pretty quickly, thank goodness.

Just got offed, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 13:26 (sixteen years ago)

Mr Writer's going to win by an even bigger margin than they did on the bands poll.

I really like about 15-20 of those songs and am baffled as to why some were nominated, and I don't just mean the contrarian choices from LJ.

Billy Dods, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 13:29 (sixteen years ago)

who the fuck added Barmy Army/Primal Scream ?
jesus !
top quality dubbed up brilliance that is (though the spoken word version on the cd single is shyte.
my vote : terrorvision

mark e, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 13:29 (sixteen years ago)

"Country House" it is

Tom D., Wednesday, 4 June 2008 13:29 (sixteen years ago)

Hey - I only suggested Glory Box in a fit of "what the hell we're nominating GOOD songs now" pique, and Mr. Neuname took me up on it even after I RETRACTED the nomination

Just got offed, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 13:30 (sixteen years ago)

Place Your Hands > Mulder And Scully >>>>> Daylight

King Boy Pato, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 13:31 (sixteen years ago)

Well nominate those songs you like for the best song poll which are being taken on the other thread

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 13:31 (sixteen years ago)

BTW : these threads are certainly revealing the clientelle of ILM aren't they ie old fuckers who are bored @ work.

mark e, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 13:33 (sixteen years ago)

If it was a BEST SONG poll, the clear winner would be "Slight Return".

King Boy Pato, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 13:34 (sixteen years ago)

best song here is the dubstar one which i nominated in a similar fit of pique

Just got offed, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 13:38 (sixteen years ago)

suggs is a cover version with a reggae rap, giving it a real edge.

darraghmac, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 13:40 (sixteen years ago)

Good!
Pulp - Sorted for E's & Wizz

Meh:

Republica - Drop Dead Gorgeous

Primal Scream - The Big Man and the Scream Team Meet the Barmy Army Uptown
Fatboy Slim - Praise You

Pashmina, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 13:50 (sixteen years ago)

Voted for "Mr Writer", and easy choice.

Pashmina, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 13:50 (sixteen years ago)

AN easy choice, even.

Pashmina, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 13:53 (sixteen years ago)

easy "mr writer" zing

Just got offed, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 13:57 (sixteen years ago)

If Kelly Jones had had Pitchfork in mind when writing the lyrics people on here would defend it

DJ Mencap, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 14:00 (sixteen years ago)

I think "Mr Writer" is bad enough (bad as in leaden, turgid, dirgey) that maybe, MAYBE people wouldn't.

Pashmina, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 14:01 (sixteen years ago)

it's here now BEST SONG Of These Mid To late 90s UK Bands.

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 14:41 (sixteen years ago)

A lot of these I don't even remember. "Mr Writer" comes a close second, but it has to be "Place Your Hands", simply for being the equivalent of a long drawn out attack of diarrhoea.

snoball, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 14:46 (sixteen years ago)

Mulder & Scully gets my vote.

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 14:51 (sixteen years ago)

ONLY THE STRONGEST WILL SURVIVE
THESE DAYS YOU'VE GOTTA KILL YOURSELF JUST TO STAY ALIVE

Matt DC, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:01 (sixteen years ago)

That might actually beat Mr Writer.

Come Back To What You Know is really awful as well.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:03 (sixteen years ago)

MemJog for Pash!

Cast - Alright "I think it's all right, I think it's all ri-hight"
Gene - For The Dead "Am I really that nasty?"
The verve - Drugs Dont Work (kidding, right?)
The Auteurs - Chinese Bakery (me too)
Seahorses - Love Me And leave Me "I don't believe in xxx" - Liam wrote the tune, I believe.

Suggs - Cecilia
Hurricane #1 - Only The Strongest Will Survive

Shed Seven - Going For Gold "I never said never, ever..."

Supernaturals - Smile - The bank ad.. "SMILE SMILE SMILE SMILE !!" (the bank leaves off the "CAUSE THATS! ALL! YOU GOT LEFT!!! funnily enough)

Longpigs - She Said - Thom's brother (rlly) "So I put on clothes that make me feel like someone else!! IN BEDDDDD!!"

Northern Uproar - From A Window - cant remember, and I bought this!

Heavy Stereo - Chinese Burn pass
18 Wheeler - Stay pass

My Life Story - 12 Reasons I Love Her please take it away..
3 Colours Red - Sixty Mile Smile pass
Radiohead - High N Dry - kidding right?

Geneva - No One Speaks -?-
Silver Sun - Julia -?-
Terrorvision - Tequila - Jap girls and bloke going 'ooo tequila' a lot
Spice Girls - Mama -!-
Warm Jets - Hurricane -?-
Monaco - Sweet Lips they had another single?

hope that helped!

Mark G, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:06 (sixteen years ago)

Thom?

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:09 (sixteen years ago)

i don't think i've actually heard all these songs, so i didn't feel qualified to vote...

but then i noticed seahorses on the list and couldn't help myself.

i really want to hear the 'blame LJ' mix of glory box now.

Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:10 (sixteen years ago)

Oops, "The Drugs Don't Work" belongs in Wretched – memorably terrible - death preferable to this I think I'd have picked it as worst were it not for "Mr Writer" (for the same reasons - deadly leaden dirge)

Pashmina, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:11 (sixteen years ago)

Actively hated these at the time:

Stereophonics - Mr Writer
Cast - Alright
The verve - Drugs Dont Work
Travis - Why Does It Always Rain On Me
Space - Avenging Angels
Catatonia - Mulder And Scully
Hurricane #1 - Only The Strongest Will Survive
Space With cerys Matthews (Catatonia) - The Ballad Of Tom Jones
Republica - Drop Dead Gorgeous

Most of the rest I didn't like but wasn't bothered about, or didn't know.

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:12 (sixteen years ago)

I own these ones (some on comps and that but still):

Gene - For The Dead
Oasis - Roll With It
Boo Radleys - Wake Up Boo
Lush - Lady Killers
Pulp - Sorted for E's & Wizz
The Auteurs - Chinese Bakery
Shed Seven - Going For Gold
Longpigs - She Said
Echobelly - King Of The Kerb
Dubstar - Stars
Elastica - Connection
Bis - Kandy Pop
Powder - Afrodisiac
Portishead - Glory Box (Blame LJ)
Prodigy - Firestarter
Ian Brown - My Star
Kenickie - Punka
Charlatans - How High
Belle & Sebastian - Legal Man
Radiohead - High N Dry (Nominated by LJ)

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:14 (sixteen years ago)

Thom's brother was in The Unbelievable Truth, not Longpigs.

Chris in Belfast, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:16 (sixteen years ago)

i hate telling people that i like katatonia (swedish dark rock outfit) only to have them sing that 'mulder and scully' crime against music in my face

Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:16 (sixteen years ago)

Voted for Mr Writer purely cos I remember hating it so much at the time. I can't remember how it goes now.

Chris in Belfast, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:19 (sixteen years ago)

Maybe you should have the courtesy to explain which identically-pronounced band you're referring to then

xpost

DJ Mencap, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:19 (sixteen years ago)

OK, then he's Thom's brother, metaphorically.

(What was the unbelTruth's 'famous' song then?)

Mark G, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:20 (sixteen years ago)

i hate telling people that i like katatonia (swedish dark rock outfit) only to have them sing that 'mulder and scully' crime against music in my face

lol

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:21 (sixteen years ago)

I have never knowingly heard the following:

The Auteurs - Chinese Bakery
Seahorses - Love Me And leave Me
Hurricane #1 - Only The Strongest Will Survive
Northern Uproar - From A Window
Heavy Stereo - Chinese Burn
18 Wheeler - Stay
Feeder - High
3 Colours Red - Sixty Mile Smile
Monaco - Sweet Lips
Black Grape - Englands Irie

And for the love of god I’d like to keep it that way.

Oops, forgot to vote! Embrace have to get it, for crimes against music.

CharlieNo4, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:23 (sixteen years ago)

The Auteurs - Chinese Bakery (me too)
Is this really from mid-late 90s? I thought it was earlier. I have the single (it was in a charity shop and I like the Auteurs OK) and remember nothing about it.

Suggs - Cecilia
Utterly unnecessary Simon and Garfunkel cover.

Longpigs - She Said - Thom's brother (rlly)
Sure you're not thinking of the Unbelievable Truth? (xpost, sorry Chris and Mark)

18 Wheeler - Stay pass
Jangling, delay pedals, possibly tepid drum machine beats, on Creation, lyrics might be "stay... for a while... I don't mind if you do" but I might just be making that up. A bit rubbish but I find it somewhere between inoffensive and pleasant. David Keenan was in these guys! For a bit. Before this.

Silver Sun - Julia -?-
Julia (Juuu-liiii-aaaaa), oh, what can I do? cz every day I look a little more like
every day I look a little more like

I do not hate the last two. These bands had plenty of worse songs, and there were plenty of worse bands than these.

What cruel joke has placed Stiltskin on best songs list and not worst songs list?

a passing spacecadet, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:24 (sixteen years ago)

It seems like Stereophonics will walk this which means Mulder And Scully wont get all the votes it deserves.

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:28 (sixteen years ago)

lol playing this Friday:

THE DRELLAS

Tommy Scott of 1990s indie giants Space (“Female of the Species”)
gets to let out his heavy rock’n’roll side.

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:28 (sixteen years ago)

The Seahorses it is again, then.

Pillbox, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:30 (sixteen years ago)

I've never met anyone who likes it actually.

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 6 June 2008 21:13 (sixteen years ago)

I saw Baby Bird before that song came out, they/he were ok. Friend of mine had heard them on John Peel or something, I'd never heard of them.

Colonel Poo, Friday, 6 June 2008 21:16 (sixteen years ago)

Mark & Lard used to play Babybird a lot on their 10pm show on R1. They had mail order only eps that sold for shitloads back then.

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 6 June 2008 21:19 (sixteen years ago)

'Fireworks' is the best thing Embrace have ever made.

I'd rather say the worst. They didn't get good until they slowed down and started coming up with those great anthemic ballads.

No fuckin way is 'Lucky You' better than 'Pure'!

It sure is. On second thought it may not be better than "Joy" or "Perfect" though.

And "Country House" is still one of the greatest songs that have ever been written. Wonderfully happy, happy, happy and anthemic with a great and happy singalong chorus that sticks in your head and stays there. A sign a quality!

Geir Hongro, Friday, 6 June 2008 22:07 (sixteen years ago)

"Country House" is a fantastic song for the exact same reason that "Friday I'm In Love", "Mint Car", Wake Up Boo!" and "Find The Answer Within" are fantastic songs.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 6 June 2008 22:08 (sixteen years ago)

Country House and Roll With It still make me want to break things after all these years. It's a pity that the britpop war between both was about the 2 worst singles either ever made.

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 6 June 2008 23:34 (sixteen years ago)

Blow, blow Geir out, I am so sad I don't know why

ledge, Friday, 6 June 2008 23:36 (sixteen years ago)

Gotta say I didn't like the song either but have fond memories of shitty indie disco dancefloors during the I'm so sad I don't know why bit. lol what did you look like in college etc.

Colonel Poo, Friday, 6 June 2008 23:40 (sixteen years ago)

"Roll With It" is great too. Probably one of Oasis' two most Beatlesque song ever (as in early Beatles, as opposed to the 1967-Beatles of "Who Feels Love")

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 7 June 2008 01:53 (sixteen years ago)

It's easily the worst thing Oasis ever did. Horrid song, was so disappointed when I 1st heard it.

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 9 June 2008 23:04 (sixteen years ago)

it's not even within screaming distance of the worst thing oasis ever did

electricsound, Monday, 9 June 2008 23:07 (sixteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 23:01 (sixteen years ago)

What is worse?

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 23:21 (sixteen years ago)

That Reef song goes "Place your hands over my hole," right?

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 23:49 (sixteen years ago)

I only vaguely remember it to be honest. Other songs on this list I remember more. What was the Reef song used in the sony minidisc advert?

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 12 June 2008 11:47 (sixteen years ago)

Hey! Reef = Free. Like, if they were overblown and sucky.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Thursday, 12 June 2008 22:37 (sixteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Thursday, 12 June 2008 23:01 (sixteen years ago)

Three people need forcible removal of ears by blunt-force extraction.

Just got offed, Thursday, 12 June 2008 23:08 (sixteen years ago)

Nah, that Levellers song is truly horrible.

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 12 June 2008 23:13 (sixteen years ago)

Seriously, if you voted for Dubstar, I want you to post here explaining just why you deserve to live.

Just got offed, Thursday, 12 June 2008 23:17 (sixteen years ago)

Louis, It's ILM, people will be more bothered about the 2 people other than DG who voted Kenickie.

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 12 June 2008 23:24 (sixteen years ago)

Or that anyone can think Sing It Back is in any way inferior to any of the top five.

chap, Friday, 13 June 2008 00:09 (sixteen years ago)

Hey Louis, "people"'s objections carry more weight than yours. This is ILM, remember...hang on, eh, what?

ailsa, Friday, 13 June 2008 08:48 (sixteen years ago)

What was the Reef song used in the sony minidisc advert?

It was called Naked. Thankfully I can't remember anything else about it. They were pretty much failures until Chris Evans liked that other song, as I remember it.

Bocken Social Scene, Friday, 13 June 2008 12:51 (sixteen years ago)

Oh that "I'll blow you away.." song.

Mark G, Friday, 13 June 2008 12:54 (sixteen years ago)

Ahh of course. I vaguely remember it now.

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 13 June 2008 13:41 (sixteen years ago)

Really? I don't remember Catatonia being THAT bad. Cerys's solo albums even have a couple nice tracks here and there.

teflon monkey, Friday, 13 June 2008 17:07 (sixteen years ago)

Her voice was unbearable in those singles.

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 13 June 2008 18:03 (sixteen years ago)

Just came back from lunch and this totally inexplicable album http://paulmcgarry.com/cdcatalogue/details/4871.html is playing. I have learned that I can't shake the fact that I really liked 'King Of The Kerb' by Echobelly when I was 15. Thanks, Q magazine!

DJ Mencap, Thursday, 26 June 2008 14:14 (sixteen years ago)

http://blogmunch.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/08/seinfeld.jpg that CD?

the next grozart, Thursday, 26 June 2008 14:41 (sixteen years ago)

too many Mr Writers on this board. why don't they tell it like it really is?

blueski, Thursday, 26 June 2008 14:47 (sixteen years ago)

That cd has Fun Lovin Criminals on it. I could never understand why they were so popular, Who the fuck bought that shit?

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 26 June 2008 15:14 (sixteen years ago)

students, candlestick makers

blueski, Thursday, 26 June 2008 15:19 (sixteen years ago)

British people whose idea of cool hadn't evolved past the 80s playground vision of cool that involved talking with a fake american accent and wearing "shades" all the time.

the next grozart, Thursday, 26 June 2008 15:23 (sixteen years ago)

damn students

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 26 June 2008 15:23 (sixteen years ago)

like you guys have better taste! ;)

blueski, Thursday, 26 June 2008 15:27 (sixteen years ago)

one year passes...

no complaints with this winner

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 1 October 2009 21:39 (fifteen years ago)

I don't like Stereophonics much, but "Mr. Writer" is one of their better songs. Sure, the lyrics are kind of whiney, but the melody is better than most of what they came up with otherwise.

Britpop was all about the tunes, and the problem about Stereophonics is that the tunes mostly didn't hope up. They were too repetitive and... well.... too R&B, simply.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Thursday, 1 October 2009 21:45 (fifteen years ago)

lol

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 1 October 2009 21:47 (fifteen years ago)

Chuckling at Stereophonics being too R&B. What a poll though - 'Tattva' is about the best thing here. 47 of the 50 would've been worthy winners.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 1 October 2009 22:00 (fifteen years ago)

i forgot how much lj loved dubstar. What a waste of space they were.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 1 October 2009 22:03 (fifteen years ago)

So, have the Stereo's finally conceded that "Mr Writer" was a mistake?

Or do they still play it at gigs and have the fans sing along in defiance?

Just wondering...

Mark G, Thursday, 1 October 2009 22:34 (fifteen years ago)

Geir is right about the stereophonics tunes being weak.

mu-mu (Pashmina), Thursday, 1 October 2009 22:36 (fifteen years ago)

dubstar were so not a waste of space. what a stupid opinion.

i'm the unban spaceman (electricsound), Thursday, 1 October 2009 22:56 (fifteen years ago)

and like that, ESOJ and I come into our once-a-century cosmic alignment ;)

kell surprise (country matters), Thursday, 1 October 2009 23:01 (fifteen years ago)

i do think they had their saggy moments (mostly on the second record) but the first album is pretty strong all the way through, and the third album was much better than expected

also 'a certain sadness' is one of the best b-sides of all time

i'm the unban spaceman (electricsound), Thursday, 1 October 2009 23:04 (fifteen years ago)

I only have the best-of. All the stuff off the first album is ace, and after that Can't Tell Me and to a lesser extent The Self Same Thing are super. CTM is a *brilliant* pop-song, up there with Stars, Anywhere, JAGSS, NSMN, possibly better than all four (well, maybe not Anywhere or JAGSS). Would like to hear album tracks, b-sides etc.

kell surprise (country matters), Thursday, 1 October 2009 23:08 (fifteen years ago)

i think they're a band who could make a b-sides album that would hold up. the NSMN EP is fantastic from start to finish, and even their last single was great (despite the appearance of ian broudie).
