or, in other words - should i invest my time here?

I think Lucero sums up everything that I find boring in rock music.
― roxymuzak, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 18:26 (sixteen years ago)
I liked Red 40 better.
― Pleasant Plains, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 18:37 (sixteen years ago)
first three are hit or miss. when they miss, it's pretty dire. haven't so much as heard a note since the third one. not into the vocals at all, but nice dudes & awesome drummer.
― will, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 18:49 (sixteen years ago)
"awesome drummer"
really? im listening now to "further west" and it sounds kinda standard
― Zeno, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 19:03 (sixteen years ago)
not sure if I've heard further west, but I alwys thought (well the 5 or so times I saw em live) Roy's drumming was kinda unorthodox for a country-rock -whatever band, veering towards symphonic in a way. Maybe I was just really high.
― will, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 19:31 (sixteen years ago)
"Maybe I was just really high"
i rest my case
― Zeno, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 19:33 (sixteen years ago)
fair enough. this was live, too. they might keep him in check in the studio.
― will, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 20:16 (sixteen years ago)
based on what i read about them i feel like i would love these guys but i've never actually heard a note

I'm in the same position, though from what I gather it's more like they'd sound like something that sounds like something I love...?
Would give chance, I guess.
― what u arrestin me for, innit (╓abies), Tuesday, 16 June 2009 08:24 (fifteen years ago)
I love the music/score the main dude did for "Shotgun Stories," which was a pretty great indie flick from last year.
― Metro Video Centers, Tuesday, 16 June 2009 09:07 (fifteen years ago)
so btw since this last revive i fell completely head over heel for that much further west. DL'd the new one last night and dude sounds like he blew out his voice real bad sometime this decade. they've added organ & horns in a weird bid for gravitas that just makes them sound like a misguided ska band trying to follow the lead of the Hold Steady.
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 2 October 2009 15:38 (fifteen years ago)
Two of my best friends played on their very first demo tape. They are the most ubiquitous band in Memphis. I've never gotten into them at all.
― Trip Maker, Friday, 2 October 2009 16:00 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, "That Much Further West" is the best they did. I tried albums before and after, nothing is in the same category. And while TMFW is a fine alt-country album, it's still not a top tier one.
― Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 2 October 2009 16:37 (fifteen years ago)
These guys were big locally when I lived in Memphis in the late 90s/early 00s, but I never got into them then. But I had been gone for years when I heard TMFW, so maybe it was homesickness that weakened my defenses. I think that's the best thing they've done. To me it's a drummer's album -- he leads the band. I love the way he comes in about twice as fast as expected on "Tears Don't Matter Much," which completely redefines the song and undercuts some of its sentimentality. Unfortunately, he wasn't as prominent on Nobody's Darlings or Rogues, Rebels, which sound a lot more pedestrian. I do like the new quite a bit, though. It makes good use of some local sounds and talents.
― Stephen Deusner, Friday, 2 October 2009 16:49 (fifteen years ago)
search 1/2 - 3/4 of TMFW, Tennessee, s/t and the first demo (re-released a few years ago as "The Attic Tapes"). Can;t speak for them after that.

plus the way the drums fade in all doubletime dnb style on "when you decided to leave" kills me every time

ok i gotta recant
the new one is really growing on me.
i've listened to the first three tracks like 8 times today. i drunkenly quoted a lyric from the opener in a cheesy text message last night. i found myself singing the guitar solo in the shower this morning.
this is how a record works its way into your life, i guess.

the bridge of 'sound of the city' is dope
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 3 October 2009 17:01 (fifteen years ago)
there keep being these real awkward moments of square country-style telecaster playing that run into real swinging drums & horns and its jarring and doesn't really work
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 3 October 2009 17:04 (fifteen years ago)
Not ashamed to admit that I really enjoy this band, when I hear them. I don't own any of their stuff, but I saw them in Boulder once. Exactly what you'd expect, but pretty fun show. These guys were HUGE in Richmond, VA a while back. probably hated now.
― Benjamin-, Thursday, 22 October 2009 17:03 (fifteen years ago)
Gonna see em in a couple weekends, pretty amped.

I'm kind of amazed to hear they're still a band. Enjoyed seeing them circa. . . '98, '99? at the punk show level, 10-20 people at the Belvedere (a large concrete gazebo, more or less) in Little Rock. Years later circa '02/'03, much less so--100-200 people, mainly seemed to go over well with slightly drunk college girls. Did they get bigger than that?
"Date at the Payphone" was better.
― Soundslike, Sunday, 18 April 2010 09:56 (fifteen years ago)
Saw them in Lousville when I was last in the states in 2002.
I was steaming drunk after an afternoon and night in the Mag Bar and decided that they were Uncle Tupelo wannabees.
Bought "That Much further West" on a nostalgia whim and loved the title track. Followed up with a couple of others but can't remember the titles. Sorry Lucero

Did they get bigger than that?
they play festivals where several hundred people sing along now so yes i guess?
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 18 April 2010 16:26 (fifteen years ago)
they still play at barley's in knoxville if that tells u anything
― roxymuzak, Wednesday, 19 May 2010 18:31 (fifteen years ago)
I really like a lot of Lucero's things. Overall I think the best disc is probably Tennessee, but they're all pretty good. The s/t is a step or two behind the others. 'Tears Don't Matter Much' and 'It Ain't No Good' are among my favorite toonz, and they do sound a bit too much like Uncle Tupelo once in a while. Not enough to dismiss them though.
