Backdrifts for me.

where i end and you begin

The Brainwasher, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 23:16 (seventeen years ago)

there is not a bad song on this album. possibly my favorite Radiohead release -- they have better songs, sure, but i think this stands up to anything they've done as a near-flawless *collection* of songs.

as a stand-alone song? "where i end and you begin"

stephen, Thursday, 5 June 2008 00:47 (seventeen years ago)

sit down, stand up.
i almost shat my pants the first time i heard "the raindrops"

Creeztophair, Thursday, 5 June 2008 01:42 (seventeen years ago)

Sit Down, Stand Up or A Punchup At A Wedding, haven't decided yet

OTM -- "Sit Down, Stand Up" would be my second choice.

stephen, Thursday, 5 June 2008 03:28 (seventeen years ago)

there there

Charlie Howard, Thursday, 5 June 2008 04:05 (seventeen years ago)

"Where I End and You Begin" is my favorite Radiohead song ever. I think it's the bass line, especially around 2.50. And somehow the repeating "I will eat you alive" is perfect.

"Wolf at the Door" is a close second. I like the creepiness of this album.

!Alicia!, Thursday, 5 June 2008 15:48 (seventeen years ago)

I sold the shit outta this album.

RabiesAngentleman, Thursday, 5 June 2008 15:59 (seventeen years ago)

Yep, me too. Then I um...downloaded it again. Sigh.

Bimble, Thursday, 5 June 2008 16:01 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I certainly miss a few select tracks. Apart from the aforementioned tracks I recall liking the Gloaming. Or hating it? It's been too long.

RabiesAngentleman, Thursday, 5 June 2008 16:02 (seventeen years ago)

Probably my favorite record of theirs. Certainly the most underrated.

There There.

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 5 June 2008 16:08 (seventeen years ago)

"The Gloaming" is fucking incredible on a nice stereo.

stephen, Thursday, 5 June 2008 17:33 (seventeen years ago)

...anyone wanna venture a guess for the worst song on this album?

stephen, Thursday, 5 June 2008 17:34 (seventeen years ago)

I love "A Wolf At The Door". Terrific vocal performance & the perfect tone for the album closer.

myndbloom, Thursday, 5 June 2008 17:46 (seventeen years ago)

Most here would say Go To Sleep probably, but I like it - it works well as a retro blast on an otherwise futuristic album.

chap, Thursday, 5 June 2008 17:46 (seventeen years ago)

Sorry, that was an xpost

chap, Thursday, 5 June 2008 17:46 (seventeen years ago)

I like "Go To Sleep"!

Now that the In Rainbows hysteria has died down, HTTT can reclaim its rightful place at the top of the recent Radiohead canon IMO. It's actually my overall favourite but I ain't blaming those who prefer OKC or Kid A.

Just got offed, Thursday, 5 June 2008 17:52 (seventeen years ago)

Still undecided between those two songs btw.

Just got offed, Thursday, 5 June 2008 17:54 (seventeen years ago)

Still think I prefer In Rainbows.

chap, Thursday, 5 June 2008 18:11 (seventeen years ago)

I just listened to this whole thing again and I still say there are an awful lot of tracks here that come off as boring and half-baked. Like they just didn't let their ideas develop enough or hell, maybe they just couldn't find the inspiration to come up with something better. Most of it I just find unmemorable, but like RabiesandGentlemen, I too have a few fave tracks I wish they had compiled for a really nice EP. It's sad that at the time, the temptation was to just get rid of the whole thing.

I think folks who would choose this album over Kid A or OKC are completely off their rocker.

Bimble, Thursday, 5 June 2008 18:21 (seventeen years ago)

RabiesandGentlemen

actual lols ^

stephen, Thursday, 5 June 2008 18:33 (seventeen years ago)

Bimble, which 4-5 tracks do you propose could've made a great EP?

stephen, Thursday, 5 June 2008 18:33 (seventeen years ago)

Well, Punch Up At A Wedding has always been my fave but other than that I appreciate Sit Down Stand Up, Sail To The Moon, There There & Go To Sleep.

Also, why something like the Gloaming should have been anything other than a b-side, I can't understand. There's barely anything to that at all.

Bimble, Thursday, 5 June 2008 18:38 (seventeen years ago)

punch up at a wedding could be off the wretched bends for all i care. basically half of these songs are great, a few of them are semi-interesting experiments, and a couple of them are sort of hardly hanging in there.

this is coming from somebody who claims radiohead to be one of their fave bands incidentally.

Charlie Howard, Thursday, 5 June 2008 18:43 (seventeen years ago)

This is easily their best-sequenced album aside from MAYBE OK Computer. The way each song sets you up for the next one is astonishing.

HI DERE, Thursday, 5 June 2008 19:48 (seventeen years ago)

It's insane how much better "Sit Down, Stand Up" is live. Having heard a live MP3 of it before the album came out, I was sure it would be a favorite, but the whole "raindrops" part sounds so stiff the way they recorded it here! It ruins the song for me.

I do like a good deal of the rest of the album, but nothing really stands out for me except maybe "Wolf at the Door". There's something slightly off about this album--like they couldn't get it exactly right so they just settled for what's here. Haven't they acknowledged this as an explanation for why they sought out a different producer for In Rainbows at first?

lou, Thursday, 5 June 2008 20:21 (seventeen years ago)

this is the one where thom yorke really annoys the shit out of me innit? or is that Amnesiac? cant remember.

Thomas, Thursday, 5 June 2008 20:25 (seventeen years ago)

It's insane how much better "Sit Down, Stand Up" is live.

Okay I've said it on other threads, but seriously dude, you could say this about ANY Radiohead song. They are always better live and they always will be.

like they couldn't get it exactly right so they just settled for what's here

Yep. Part of me wonders if they just wanted to get out of their record contract already.

Bimble, Thursday, 5 June 2008 21:41 (seventeen years ago)

"raindrops" is one of my favorite parts of the record.

Jordan, Thursday, 5 June 2008 21:45 (seventeen years ago)

and it's way better on the record than here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSq3ntychaI

Jordan, Thursday, 5 June 2008 21:48 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Monday, 9 June 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

I voted "Myxomatosis". It became my favorite song off the record after hearing it played live on the HTTT tour.

van smack, Monday, 9 June 2008 23:33 (seventeen years ago)

i listen to this album much more than kid a or amnesiac. maybe because I saw them live on tour for this record, it's stuck with me a lot better. anyway, I'll vote for wolf at the door.

akm, Monday, 9 June 2008 23:44 (seventeen years ago)

there there might be my favorite r-head song ever, soooo that

I don't think I can ever trust anyone who hates on this album.

Ha ha, but also, whoever said this was the creepiest R-head album was OTM. I always said, and did out loud in some review most likely lost to history, that this album is their Nursery Cryme.

Lostandfound, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 07:30 (seventeen years ago)

too late for my vote to be counted, but my favorite is "2+2=5."

get bent, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 13:36 (seventeen years ago)

i do quite like this album, but Bimble is largely OTM on this thread.

I assumed Backdrifts was more of a favorite. It's definitely mine.

same here.

I was thinking prematurely about the upcoming Radiohead pol, and while Kid A is def my favorite Radiohead album, there's almost 100% chance that more songs from HTTT would make a 20-track ballot than from Kid A

I'm sorry I said anything (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 2 May 2013 16:27 (twelve years ago)

Absolutely. There There, 2+2, Backdrifts, Sail and Where I End are all killer, although We Suck Young Blood may still be the worst song they've released since Pablo Honey.

Deafening silence (DL), Thursday, 2 May 2013 16:29 (twelve years ago)

This record is spooky. When it was released, I drove around the boonies at night with some friends for a first listen. Dirt roads. Creepy isolated houses with stained glass windows in the middle of corn fields. The ethanol plant looked like the emerald city. Spooky.

P is for Poo Poo Doo Doo (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 2 May 2013 17:33 (twelve years ago)

I always thought of "There, There" as kind of diffuse, not really a heavy hitter, but man have I fallen hard for that song in the last few days.

xp It's still a bit over twenty polls away, so probably in a year or so, lol.

I'm sorry I said anything (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 2 May 2013 17:37 (twelve years ago)

oh man "There There" is so massive

far too much asshole flesh (DJP), Thursday, 2 May 2013 18:13 (twelve years ago)

Would have voted for 'Where I End And You Begin'.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Thursday, 2 May 2013 18:27 (twelve years ago)

Me too. This is an album that was completely focused by 9-11 and the Bush doctrine but still managed to be a great piece of art rock.
