what's supposed to be wrong with the production on any of these records

electricsound, Thursday, 5 June 2008 01:51 (seventeen years ago)

I've never really understood the concept of "bad production," tbh. Raw Power is supposed to sound shittily recorded, isn't it? Like, that's the point of the production choices they made?

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 5 June 2008 02:00 (seventeen years ago)

people can make wrong choices
and theres a reason why raw power had that other mix (david bowie's one?) that was released some years ago

Zeno, Thursday, 5 June 2008 02:02 (seventeen years ago)

and was shittier than the original

Zeno, Thursday, 5 June 2008 02:04 (seventeen years ago)

The Modern Lovers - st - here is an album that could be even better, if most of the songs wouldnt sound like demo versions

Zeno, Thursday, 5 June 2008 02:07 (seventeen years ago)

And "1977" by Ash

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 5 June 2008 02:14 (seventeen years ago)

i think the original bowie production for "raw power" sounds better than the super compressed iggy version but it's a great record either way.

2 similar ones: soft machine - volume 2 and velvet undergound - white light / white heat. both are terrific but they're also hampered by some of the muddiest production i've heard over the years. they would be immeasurably punchier with some kind of clarity.

nonightsweats, Thursday, 5 June 2008 03:15 (seventeen years ago)

punchier

Hurting 2, Thursday, 5 June 2008 03:20 (seventeen years ago)

"what's supposed to be wrong with the production on any of these records"

"they would be immeasurably punchier with some kind of clarity" (though the bad production has it's adventages - making them special in a way, like The Stones' Exile on main st)
plus - it's subjective.

sonic youth - experimental jet set, trash, and no star

strgn, Thursday, 5 June 2008 04:25 (seventeen years ago)

hmm, i tend to think that iggy's mix of 'raw power' is absolutely perfect for that album, it sounds like its about to explode out of the speakers. seems to actually capture the dangerous/exciting/unpredictable vibe that people always reference when talking about the stooges live performances. i'd nominate stooges s/t instead, it was the first thing i ever heard by them (after reading and hearing all kinds of wild stories about them) and all i could think was 'these guys are supposed to be dangerous???'. it sounds like they could all be wearing turtlenecks

6335, Thursday, 5 June 2008 05:04 (seventeen years ago)

also tend to think that exp jet set has really great production choices, love that dank reverb that they coated most of the vocals with + the gated cymbal in 'tokyo eye' + the best acoustic guitar sounds they ever got

6335, Thursday, 5 June 2008 05:09 (seventeen years ago)

Yes, it is totally subjective. Mother Juno is great. Village Greenis, too. What do you think could have been better about their production, Zeno? Just curious...

Capitaine Jay Vee, Thursday, 5 June 2008 06:18 (seventeen years ago)

s/b "is great to me" of course.

Morrissey - The First Of The Gang To Die

daavid, Thursday, 5 June 2008 07:22 (seventeen years ago)

I'm actually a fan of the SPOT/early SST aesthetic, and he's been at the deck for some amazing-sounding records (the Meat Puppets' 'Up On The Sun', for one).

But to this list, I'm adding Metallica's '...And Justice for All' and The Blood Brothers' '...Burn, Piano Island, Burn'.

MacDara, Thursday, 5 June 2008 08:21 (seventeen years ago)

i don't have any problem with the burn, piano island, burn production except that it was done by ross robinson.

Charlie Howard, Thursday, 5 June 2008 09:02 (seventeen years ago)

3. Kinks - Village Green (am i the only one here)

Wha? Sorry, don't get this one at all. Some of the earlier Kinks albums on the other hand, they really are shittily produced.

Tom D., Thursday, 5 June 2008 09:45 (seventeen years ago)

"Mother Juno is great. Village Greenis, too. What do you think could have been better about their production, Zeno?"

Mother Juno - too much trebele,Pierces voice, though high in the mix, isnt clear enough, drums sound is too loud.imo.
Village Green - though it was released in 1968, it sounds like it was recorded in 1965 or something (and theres a big difference in the production sounds on those years in general). Arthur, on the other hand, was released in 1969m and has a perfect, clear production.
sometimes i think "village green" with the production of "Arthur"=a better record.
but, of course, bad production has it's charms and you get used to it, so i might never know if i'm right only in theory or in practice too

Zeno, Thursday, 5 June 2008 13:45 (seventeen years ago)

Wow, ha ha, disagree totally, I find "Arthur" to be on the sludgy and muddy side, "Shangri-La" is esp. badly produced

Tom D., Thursday, 5 June 2008 13:49 (seventeen years ago)

Anyway, "Pet Sounds" is the real answer to this question

Tom D., Thursday, 5 June 2008 13:54 (seventeen years ago)

Also "Lick My Decals Off" and "The Spotlight Kid"

Tom D., Thursday, 5 June 2008 13:57 (seventeen years ago)

"Lick My Decals Off" -

"Wow, ha ha, disagree totally"

Zeno, Thursday, 5 June 2008 13:59 (seventeen years ago)

How is that well produced?

Tom D., Thursday, 5 June 2008 14:00 (seventeen years ago)

Also "Lick My Decals Off"

Noooo man this is perfect just as it is! imo xp

It's ragged and trebly, like the songwriting!

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 5 June 2008 14:02 (seventeen years ago)

its not a masterpiece of a production, but it's not bad either.
(though i have to say the last time i listened to it was about 2 years or so)

Zeno, Thursday, 5 June 2008 14:03 (seventeen years ago)

It sounds like an indie record. Boo!

Tom D., Thursday, 5 June 2008 14:08 (seventeen years ago)

please don't kill me but i always thought some of the songs in "this nation saving grace" could be better produced . maybe thats why i like "wonderfull and frightning world" a bit more

Zeno, Thursday, 5 June 2008 14:11 (seventeen years ago)

We're not going to agree on much here I see

"Pet Sounds" is wonderfully produced and belongs nowhere here.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 6 June 2008 09:55 (sixteen years ago)

Its one and only flaw being the cover.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 6 June 2008 09:55 (sixteen years ago)

All three Big Star albums, and Chris Bell's I Am the Cosmos, too.

pgwp, Friday, 6 June 2008 18:53 (sixteen years ago)

The production of the first (and best) Big Star album is great.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 7 June 2008 00:56 (sixteen years ago)

the first big star album has some of the best rock album production EVER. like, forever ever. all three sound great for different reasons. the recent vinyl reissue of 3rd is fucking STUNNING sound-wise. just jaw-dropping. throw away whatever cd issue you have and buy that. and a turntable.

scott seward, Saturday, 7 June 2008 01:00 (sixteen years ago)

The 3rd one sounds just as unfinished as it is. Which may be positive to some, but not for me. It did contain hints of some nice songs in there though.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 7 June 2008 01:51 (sixteen years ago)

it's so deep and layered though! it's not the "skeletal" "unfinished" beast that people seem to think it is. there is so much going on. you could first really here this on the ryko cd, but you can hear it even more on the new vinyl pressing. most people would kill to have an album of theirs sound so "unfinished".

scott seward, Saturday, 7 June 2008 02:24 (sixteen years ago)

As usual, Geir doens't know wtf he's talking about. Agreed on the first BS album having an awesome production.

Scik Mouthy, Saturday, 7 June 2008 08:59 (sixteen years ago)

Considering how much better the Peel Sessions versions sound, I'll say Jesus and Mary Chain, "Psychocandy".
