In a world where the term "indie" can mean "having a haircut like him from the Kooks", you can sometimes forget the importance of truly independent music. That's why the Association of Independent Music (AIM) is planning a series of "independence day" events on July 4, celebrating 50 years of musicians doing it for themselves.
The purpose is to remind people how influential indie labels have been in the realm of pop music, hence a CD of cover songs featuring bands such as the Specials, New Order and Public Image Ltd. The compilation will be available for one weekend only, but it will be on offer all over the world so punters everywhere can enjoy "a once-in-a-lifetime chance to grab a piece of musical history".
Also up for discussion are the names of the world's all-time favourite independent albums and, even though it's just a bit of fun, the nominations will no doubt be eagerly thrashed out in a chain of events across the USA, Japan, Mexico and beyond.
Recent goodies such as the Arctic Monkeys' Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not (Domino) and the White Stripes' Elephant (XL) will be competing against seminal classics such as the Talking Heads' Fear of Music (Sire) and Marvin Gaye's What's Going On (Tamla/Motown).
Which all-time indie greats would make it onto your best of list?

Cardiacs, Cardiacs, Cardiacs. Simply the best band ever. Check them out on Youtube if you're uninitiated.

Only one candidate really, 'Geek Love' by Bang Bang Machine, which topped John Peel's festive fifty in 1992. My definition of indie basically used to be anything played by John Peel.
These days, there are precious few bands I would truly classify as carrying through the 'indie asthetic', whatever that is.

One thing I have noticed about indie (not just the music but also style and fashion) is that it always filters down to the mainstream after about 3 years. This is usually a tepid, watered-down, crap version of the once cool original. As Jonathan Kitson said - they take something good, put some poo on it, then try to sell it to the kids who have no idea.

Cuz Peel iz ded, amirite?

Geek Love by Bang Bang Machine.
The most beautiful song to top the Festive Fifty IMHO. Pure, unrefined indie.

Swell Maps' 'Looking at Seymour'

These days it seems that 'indie' appears to refer to some dickhead T4 presenter who likes Razorlight.
At what point did indie stop being indie?
I'm guessing it was around about the time Oasis sacked Tony McCarroll.

Swash (Uprush and Backwash), in geography, is the water that washes up on shore after an incoming wave has broken. This action will cause sand and other light particles to be transported up the beach. The direction of the swash varies with the prevailing wind, whereas the backwash is always perpendicular to the coastline. This may cause longshore drift.

Man, oh man. My favorite song changes almost weekly!
Right now, I adore "All the pretty faces".

Does the term indie only refer to rock bands on independent labels or are we talking about all other genres too? For the last few years I've been hooked on US based independent rap labels like Cold Chillin', Stones Throw, Definitive Jux etc. who have been churning out quality music since the early 90s. Don't know why but these labels and their subsequent artist hardly get called indie artists.

Not Public Image, for a start. They were on Virgin, hardly the most independent of labels.

I really wish people would stop mentioning the Arctic effing Monkeys , listen carefully, they are shit people, really they are;p they gotta be the most overrated outfit since, umm, the Killers..... or uuh...The Kooks, or uhh.... The White Stripes? As far as the arguement goes this stuff isnt Indie. Surely Indie refers to a very specific time in musical history, i.e. the mid to late 80's. Bands such as The Birthday Party, Crass, Half Man Half Biscuit, New Model Army, The Smiths etc, could be classed as Indie but as has been pointed out they had to be on an independent label to count as Indie and not all of these were. (I cant really be bothered finding out which ones to be honest). One really awful thing about Indie as a gendre is the really awful jangly navel gazing bands it spawned. To me, who was actually there, Indie signifies a time in the mid to late eighties when we were all sitting about in a malaise desperately waiting for something better to happen (i.e. Rave). The NME championed the gendre, and a million spotty student NME reading tossers splattered puss on their bathroom mirror in time to it. The intelligent ones got into E and dancing. When the Rave scene kicked off most of my Indie stuff went in the bin, mainly because in the flashbulb of MDMA enlightenment I saw it for what it really was; a pile of depressing pretentious shite. It's Music for Art students to feign suicide to. The Velvet Underground are probably guilty of spawning the whole sad gendre at the end of the day; having given rise to the deeply flawed concept that you can mix music with art (music is actually art in its own right. This eventually, through the tainted prism Indie gave rise to the even more flawed concept that music should be depressing to be good. Living proof of the farcical tragedy that is INdie; T'Artic Monkeys t'Shadow puppet project. All I can say is thank god for Joey Beltram Energy Flash. A true undergound masterpiece.
