I just shook his hand and bought five bits of art off him for $1 each. Brilliant.

Nah, he's selling 20,000 pieces of a photograph by Richard Long which he bought for $20,000 back in 97. And he's selling each piece for $1. And then he's taking the money to the place where the photo was taken, and burying it in the stone circle that the photo is of (it's in Iceland). And then he's taking a photo of the money from the cut- up photo burried in the place in the photo and hanging it in the original frame of the $20,000 photo, so he can appreciate it more.

Bill Drummond is nearly 50.

I just met Bill Drummond. This is so cool. It was like Shakin' Stevens coming face-to-face with Elvis. How bad would I be if I ever met Hunter S Thompson?

Nick Southall, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ask him when his new bloody book is being published. I preordered it at Amazon and they keep pushing the flippin' release date back.

clotion, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

About a month. He had a copy with him tonight, it's very nice, bound in blue cloth-stuff.

Nick Southall, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Woo hoo! Thanks!

clotion, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

So, uh, where Exactly is this stone circle?

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i r envious of you nick.

jess, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Now now Spencer, I can see that glint in your eyes. It's in Iceland, and only Bill Drummond and Richard Long know exactly where. And even Bill isn't 100% sure. You ain't gonna find that box!

Mind you, apparently if you can salvage the metal strips from damaged UK bank notes, and take them to the bank of England, they'll replace the notes for you. The K Foundation burnt a million quid in £50 notes on an island off Scotland in 1993. I wonder where those metal strips are...

Drummond has taken the words "totally madey uppy" and created a pan-galactic empire of erm "event" and "artefact" (which = grate obv)

mark s, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

let's talk about shakin' stevens instead. is he still out there, somewhere?

g, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Shakin' Stevens is related (can't remember how--possibly uncle) to drum 'n bass guy High Contrast. True story.

s woods, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, I think it's grate that King Boy D is keeping busy. Though it seems like he's downsizing on the wanton cash destruction.

Spencer Chow, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

so nick: yr an exeter dweller too. bill's gig was good, proving he's just an ordinary, decent bloke who wants to make art. its not often that our sleepy little town gets such an event, although it has been livelying up a bit in recent years. something to do with a rumour that its the new bristol. :)

dbini, Sunday, 12 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Last time I saw Bill.D he was giving a talk, telling stories etc. At the end he spent several minutes letting the audience in on his plans for a forthcoming adventure (north pole / hymalayas???). But then! he explained how his wife/partner was against the idea and asked us, the audience, to persuade her. Which of course they did, cheering and turning to face her whilst she grimaced at the back. Bill stood on stage holding their daughter on stage in silence while everyone waited for her answer. Knowing little about their relationship, I found this excruciating. Otherwise Bill.D = no.1 art-prankster.

nick.K, Sunday, 12 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

are you sure it's Shakin' Stevens? you're not thinking of Adam F (who is the son of Alvin Stardust)

michael, Sunday, 12 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am increasingly of thee opinion that bill drummond is a silly old fart.

Norman Phay, Sunday, 12 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

three years pass...
I met Bill Drummond's son today. We talked about EMI's marketing department and the Will Young single, which he reckons cops the melody to "Footloose".

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 7 November 2005 19:15 (nineteen years ago)

Scik Mouthy, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 08:39 (seventeen years ago)

The Foundry is pretty rubbish but I guess that's not his fault.

ledge, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 09:19 (seventeen years ago)
