i sorta like depeche mode but how can this not be new order?

omar little, Thursday, 5 June 2008 23:49 (seventeen years ago)

Technique is the jam.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Thursday, 5 June 2008 23:58 (seventeen years ago)

This is like one of those King Solomon choices, where I'm gonna have to cut up a baby.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 6 June 2008 00:00 (seventeen years ago)

Technique easy. I love Violator, but it's a flawed good album (don't care for "Clean" or "Blue Dress"). Then again, Sumner could never manage the dirty, stupid melodramatic rush of "Halo."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 6 June 2008 00:09 (seventeen years ago)

how can this not be new order?

because Violator is one of the premiere albums of the 20th century :O !!

stephen, Friday, 6 June 2008 00:22 (seventeen years ago)

(don't care for "Clean" or "Blue Dress")

these are my two favorite tracks.

Curt1s Stephens, Friday, 6 June 2008 01:52 (seventeen years ago)

both great albums (& both kinda overrated).

Curt1s Stephens, Friday, 6 June 2008 01:54 (seventeen years ago)

violator is better

akm, Friday, 6 June 2008 06:53 (seventeen years ago)

I think I'll abstain. The highs are higher on 'Technique' but 'Violator' is maybe slightly more consistent.

baaderonixx, Friday, 6 June 2008 07:43 (seventeen years ago)

"Violator" by a landslide. Never understood what's so great about "Technique" - New Order's mid 80s output is much better.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 6 June 2008 08:48 (seventeen years ago)

What is great about Technique:

"Fine Time", "Love Less", "Round and Round", "Guilty Partner", "Run", "Mr. Disco", "Vanishing Point", "Dream Attack"

What is great about Violator:

"World In My Eyes", "Personal Jesus", "Waiting For The Night", "Halo", "Enjoy The Silence", "Policy of Truth", "Blue Dress", "Clean"

8 vs 8

HI DERE, Friday, 6 June 2008 12:04 (seventeen years ago)

Why you no <3 sweetest perfection? My only problem with it is a few dodgy lyrics for the sake of a rhyme, specifially "undetectedly". The middle eight is... well, the sweetest perfection really.

ledge, Friday, 6 June 2008 12:13 (seventeen years ago)

my favourite NO album and my favourite DM album. light and shade. yin and yang. or something.

NO wins in a fraction of a heartbeart, though, by dint of technique being perhaps my favourite album of all time, yadda yadda.

grimly fiendish, Friday, 6 June 2008 14:50 (seventeen years ago)

Technique seems like he'd be more fun to have around.

Millsner, Friday, 6 June 2008 15:53 (seventeen years ago)

Violator = not too bad, some really decent numbers, singles always welcome in the mix
Technique = actually good

I know this makes me Dan's enemy tho :(

J0hn D., Friday, 6 June 2008 16:03 (seventeen years ago)

I guess I should actually listen to Technique... not that it would ever change my vote.

ledge, Friday, 6 June 2008 16:07 (seventeen years ago)

voting for one of two albums in a poll when you haven't heard the other should be a bannable offense

J0hn D., Friday, 6 June 2008 16:43 (seventeen years ago)

Ah I know enough NO to know they will never rock my world like DM.

Ok I just listened to some tracks on youtube:
Run: sub OMD
Fine Time: wtf is this a joke? it's just some kid mucking about on a cheapo casio keyboard.
Mr Disco: mehhhhhhhh
Round and Round: I know this one! Not bad, best of the bunch, but it doesn't touch anything off Substance.

ledge, Friday, 6 June 2008 16:53 (seventeen years ago)

Ok I just listened to some tracks on youtube

sigh

J0hn D., Friday, 6 June 2008 22:23 (seventeen years ago)

's just some kid mucking about on a cheapo casio keyboard.

Tell no one, but this line's been lobbed at DM too.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 6 June 2008 22:25 (seventeen years ago)

sigh

what? so i didn't get all southall in my comfy perfectly positioned stereo armchair, big deal!

look, that's how they sounded to me, that's all i'm saying. i don't think giving them a more respectful listen would have improved my opinion.

ledge, Friday, 6 June 2008 22:37 (seventeen years ago)

Run: sub OMD

With all due respect this is just plain wrong. Or if it isn't I'm sure I'd like OMD a whole more than I do because this is one of my favourite NO tracks. As I've said before though I have no critical ability when it comes to NO, so you might be right.

Wow, way to change to mind in one paragraph. I need some sleep.

Ned Trifle II, Friday, 6 June 2008 23:03 (seventeen years ago)

I'm not fully acquainted with OMD's catalogue, but "Run"'s outro doesn't sound anything like OMD.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 6 June 2008 23:11 (seventeen years ago)

Well what's the use in complaining
When you've got what you don't need
Anyone would think you were hard done to
What do you want me to believe?

What the hell is happening
I can't think of everything
I don't know what day it is
Or who I'm talking to.

^Top 5 NO lyrics that mean the most to me personally.

Ned Trifle II, Friday, 6 June 2008 23:27 (seventeen years ago)

Also ILX right there.

Ned Trifle II, Friday, 6 June 2008 23:27 (seventeen years ago)

Run: sub OMD

is this QuickBASIC?

Curt1s Stephens, Friday, 6 June 2008 23:28 (seventeen years ago)

actual lol

ledge, Friday, 6 June 2008 23:29 (seventeen years ago)

i am one of ILX's biggest OMD cheerleaders. "run" is one of my favourite new order songs of all time.

i hear less than 0 OMD in it. ledge, elaborate and elucidate! which song(s) does it remind you of? i'm fascinated by this comparison.

and also, really, listen to the album properly some time because ... well, because it's godlike!

grimly fiendish, Saturday, 7 June 2008 17:47 (seventeen years ago)

clean
the cleanest i've bean

omar little, Saturday, 7 June 2008 18:29 (seventeen years ago)

Elaborate and elucidate my carelessly tossed-off remarks? o no!

It was just a feeling, not based on anything specific. I guess I was thinking of something like "If You Leave"... (so the "sub" qualifier was particularly unfair since that itself is a rather sub-OMD effort). Y'know it just sounds to me like generic 80s synth/guitar pop. Barney's vocals sound particularly flat and non-commital.

xpost. bean?

ledge, Saturday, 7 June 2008 18:35 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Thursday, 12 June 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

Not bad, best of the bunch, but it doesn't touch anything off Substance.

This is total lulz. The mixes on Substance are complete garbage, and 100% of Technique is godhead.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 12 June 2008 23:05 (seventeen years ago)

I voted for Technique

van smack, Thursday, 12 June 2008 23:07 (seventeen years ago)

I absolutely despise all three singles from Violator. Don't care what the rest sounds like either. They should have given "Personal Jesus" to Johnny Cash instead of recording their own version.

Technique is not one of my fave New Order albums, but there's no contest here. There's a lot of stuff by DM that just plain irritates me.

Bimble, Thursday, 12 June 2008 23:32 (seventeen years ago)

Technique for me, and now I'm going to start a band called Run OMD!

Bill E, Friday, 13 June 2008 04:18 (seventeen years ago)

easily "violator," i've never been a big fan of "technique."

Eisbaer, Friday, 13 June 2008 04:43 (seventeen years ago)

which pretty much has me in 100% agreement w/ geir's above comment.

Eisbaer, Friday, 13 June 2008 04:44 (seventeen years ago)

This has got to be Depeche.

Michael Servetus, Friday, 13 June 2008 05:24 (seventeen years ago)

New Order has always been better than Depeche Mode.

Bee OK, Friday, 13 June 2008 05:49 (seventeen years ago)

Haven't heard either in its entirety but based solely on the album cover it's "Technique" obviously:

I CAN'T FIND MY PEACE OF MIND WITHOUT YOU

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 13 June 2008 23:02 (seventeen years ago)

what? ilm likes new order? alert the authorities

J0hn D., Friday, 13 June 2008 23:03 (seventeen years ago)

hahahahaha

I don't even know which one I voted for

HI DERE, Friday, 13 June 2008 23:04 (seventeen years ago)

i still like violator more. generally speaking i like new order much much much more than them, but they're beat here.

akm, Friday, 13 June 2008 23:21 (seventeen years ago)

you guys, this was a Violator vs. Technique poll, not a New Order vs. Depeche Mode poll. you got it wroooooong!

stephen, Friday, 13 June 2008 23:22 (seventeen years ago)

two years pass...

I think Violator may be the perfect synth-pop record. Ruling my world right now.

oscar, Saturday, 5 March 2011 04:12 (fourteen years ago)

i love new order to death but these poll results are RONG, should be reversed

Damn this thread seems so....different without ilxor (ilxor), Saturday, 5 March 2011 05:39 (fourteen years ago)

New Order has always been better than Depeche Mode.

― Bee OK, Thursday, June 12, 2008 10:49 PM (2 years ago)

ha, still think this is true in regards to this poll. Technique is the better album but i think Violator is better than any other New Order album.

World Series champion San Francisco Giants (Bee OK), Saturday, 5 March 2011 06:01 (fourteen years ago)

the thing about Depeche Mode in regards to me is that every girl i have ever fallen madly in love with have been huge, gigantic fan of this stupid band. consequently, i have seen them live around 12 times, last time was with Primal Scream. so they have always belong to someone else more than myself.

New Order on the other hand has been pure fanboy obsession.

World Series champion San Francisco Giants (Bee OK), Saturday, 5 March 2011 06:11 (fourteen years ago)

when they're At That Age, girls succumb to Depeche Mode's aptitude for those Big Dumb Emotions.

Rich Lolwry (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 5 March 2011 13:18 (fourteen years ago)

split the difference and voted Cold Cave.

like a musical album. made by a band. (fucking in the streets), Saturday, 5 March 2011 19:08 (fourteen years ago)

Depeche Mode have always been way better than New Order fwiw

blue cake (display name version) (crüt), Saturday, 5 March 2011 19:13 (fourteen years ago)

i would have voted violator in this if I'd seen it, and I'm a much bigger New Order fan.

akm, Saturday, 5 March 2011 19:49 (fourteen years ago)

Depeche Mode have always been way better than New Order fwiw

That's completely right except it's the wrong way around.

I'm sorry, I did not create the cosmos, I merely explain it. (Ned Trifle II), Saturday, 5 March 2011 23:07 (fourteen years ago)

thirteen years pass...

New Order has always been better than Depeche Mode.

― Bee OK, Thursday, June 12, 2008 10:49 PM (2 years ago)

ha, still think this is true in regards to this poll. Technique is the better album but i think Violator is better than any other New Order album.

― World Series champion San Francisco Giants (Bee OK), Friday, March 4, 2011

I still think New Order are the better band but today I think I like Violator more than Technique. Just hearing "Halo" helps with this assessment.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 17 July 2024 04:05 (one year ago)

Depeche Mode haven't made a great album since Speak and Spell. Lots of good songs though.

the absence of bikes (f. hazel), Wednesday, 17 July 2024 04:15 (one year ago)

I love Technique but c’mon…

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Wednesday, 17 July 2024 04:21 (one year ago)

new order are absolutely the better band but while technique is near perfect ("guilty partner" brings it down unfortunately), violator is perfect

ufo, Wednesday, 17 July 2024 05:08 (one year ago)

damn tough poll! there was a time when i considered technique as the top of the 80s, full stop. but idk these days. it still f'kn roolz (+ i'd probably still give a deep consideration for side 2 being the best thing released by anybody within about a four-five year radius) but... idk.

i def love it more than violator, but honestly this is like mj v prince ― no wrong answers. everyone's a winner here, friend!

interstellar anthropologist+music philosopher, (Austin), Wednesday, 17 July 2024 06:12 (one year ago)

new order are absolutely the better band but while technique is near perfect ("guilty partner" brings it down unfortunately), violator is perfect

― ufo,

yeah but "Clean."

the talented mr pimply (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 17 July 2024 09:27 (one year ago)

Alfie i love you but "Clean" is great and "Halo" is a misshapen song missing a proper second verse.

Tim F, Wednesday, 17 July 2024 10:56 (one year ago)

DM definitely peaked with "Violator". "Technique" is New Order's best album but they peaked with singles not from this album ("Regret", "Temptation", a few others).
